I remember helping the lovely people of Joplin MO when they got hit, and it was the same thing you described. No ego, just an army of every day people rising to the occasion to help their neighbors. I mean, we get healthcare... ...the problem, in this case, was George Bush declaring what happened that day as an 'Act of God' to bail out the insurance agencies from having to pay out. In turn, that made it impossible for first responders at the site to be able to get the healthcare they needed because it was seen as 'part of the job'. I remember even as a kid there was some press briefing with either FEMA or CDC who were saying that the air quality was fine and all the particulates in the air are just simple concrete dust and gypsum from the drywall, while a literal billowing cloud of black and grey smoke was still smoldering in Manhattan for weeks afterward. And then those first responders and cleanup crews were completely abandoned and left in the hands of private charities when the cost to pay for them for life is a drop in the bucket of BS the state pays for on impulse. Shameful.

There was also a massive respirator shortage & that was why they were not worn. I was an RN @ St. Vincent's Hospital (nearest trauma center) on 9/11 & only live 2 miles from Ground Zero. The smell was in my apt. for months, making me feel sick, depending on the wind on any given day. None of us @ the hospital believed the air to be safe.

What struck me the most, is when he said, "Everybody at the time around 9/11 said, 'We wouldn't forget,' and they felt forgotten." That just breaks my heart. These people deserve all the assistance and care they need. Furthermore, on a much larger scale, it is utterly shocking to me that as a nation, we HAVE completely forgotten. The proof of that shown even more so now during this pandemic. On 9/11, it didn't matter who you were, where you came from, or what your story was. People all came together on that day to help each other, and many people didn't make it out alive in their efforts to help and save others. And now, here we are years later facing what is essentially an invisible terrorist in the form of a virus that is not only threatening our country, but the whole world. And yet it's all become about politics and negativity, and we're even more divided now than we were on 9/11 and the recovery weeks following. My Pops-- my former FIL that I adored- my kid's grandpa, was an FBI responder out of Mobile, AL who worked mostly at the SI site, as clean-up/Evidence Response. A little over about 2 years ago, he got diagnosed with a rare form of cancer-- very rare, save for within 9/11 responders. He beat the odds and lasted over a year, though we lost him a year ago in the spring. I'm so angry. That fucking day keeps taking. And people have had to argue and berate Congress to beg for help. Props to Jon Stewart, btw. And I didn't know about Mr. Buscemi was working with the firefighter's group-- but I'm not surprised. It's wonderful the work they and others are doing. I'm so thankful for all of the heroes who stood up that day. And those who stand up every day-- even now, knowing that this happened once, and still do the job and try to help people.

I briefly saw Steve years ago in LA, after watching "Con Air" at the Century City movie theatres. My dad is a firefighter here in Texas! I respect everything about every single firefighter or other first responders! That day was so so hard on everyone not just Americans…. Humans as a whole… that day will never be forgotten

As a former volunteer firefighter I'm grateful that I got the opportunity to do it I'm a Texan born and raised but I now live in New Jersey moved to New Jersey in 2003 from 62 Spotted Deer Drive the Woodlands Texas which is my old house number where I grew up how is Texas now I was born in 1989 also lived in Mexico City for three years my parents rented out our house in the Woodlands Texas while we lived in Mexico City in the 90s

Steve is so right. Breaks my heart in two that the 1st responders were not taken care of the way they were promised. They put their lives on the line to help. In any way they could. Then for the government to turn their backs on these people infuriates me. Thank God for all the good people out there leading the good fight to help all of our first responders. Thank God for the people fighting for us. Steve and I went to 55 Engine together out of probie school. Steve was a great guy who would at company dinner dances go up on stage and mimic the old timers in the FH. He was beyond hilarious. Someone had to know that his stand-up was going to make him famous. He was that good. We would not let him get off stage..Just foolishly funny. I ran into Steve during the Trade center disaster the first week. God Bless America...... Ps .... thank you for working to keep funding going. We appreciate it.

The tall skinny black building at :40 near the bottom of the screen was my uncle’s office. He got let out early on the way to work. He was covered in ash when the first tower came down, but he made it out. He got in an unlocked car to try to breathe and then I think he made it inside another building.

My grandfather was a fire fighter from 1969-2003 few years back he was diagnosed with Hodgkins cancer. Glad to say he is in remission and has been for the past 3 years. The man is still my hero! Nothing but respect for him!

I love the fact that he is different from hollywood and actually was there to help with the clean up effort when 9/11 happened. He also played a firefighter in the movie "the king of state island" which was written by Pete Davidson, who lost his father on 9/11 and also talks about his loss in the movie (although he makes no mention of 9/11). Now I see how this interpretation could have made much more impact to him. a great man.
