In the nearly 100 years since the Oscars debuted, a grand total of seven horror movies (now including The Substance) have been nominated for Best Picture. Only 1991's The Silence of the Lambs-which is also a detective story-has won.

Horror is one of the most, if not the most, powerful genres and has featured some of the best performances. Toni Collette's snub for Hereditary was egregious. I hope Demi Moore wins this year, she was incredible in The Substance. I hope that with the growing renewed critical acclaim horror has been receiving in the past few years it moves away from getting nominated for Oscars only for movies that transcend the genre (like Get Out and The Substance) and gets featured regularly in the major awards nominations.

The 4 performances you mentioned that were snubbed are literally the performances that I was thinking of in my head. Oscar worthy performances for sure. Hope when Demi wins she mentions them. Kinda like they walked so she could run. Rooting for the substance all the way.

The Academy dismissing "Pearl" and Mia Goth's performance therein was the last straw for me. Especially after they all knew and were put on notice after they royally screwed up in not recognizing Toni Collette in "Hereditary."

So pleased to see horror films starting to see their rightful place as respected cinema by both fans AND those in the film industry. Nosferatu’s tech nominations and the above-the-line love given to The Substance are great signs of that. Here’s to hoping Demi Moore is honored in order to speak to the power of her film and horror as a genre to jar, inspire, influence and of course entertain us.

Also with the exception of Rosemary's Baby, you could argue the other mentioned winning performances were more psychological thrillers than horrors. Though I understand the intersection between the two and blurring of genre lines.

Naomi Scott in Smile 2 was absolutely incredible. The role of Skye Riley asked so much from a performer and Scott delivered a very vulnerable and intense performance, she knew when to be subtle and when to crank it to 1000. I really think she gave the best performance from an actress in 2024.

Mia Goth for Pearl, Toni Colette for Hereditary, Naomi Scott for Smile 2, Lily-Rose Depp for Nosferatu. Notice how all the snubs are of women too? I’m hoping Demi Moore wins for The Substance but the Oscars need to take horror as a genre seriously, not just the occasional film that transcends the genre. Horror is the genre that currently has some the best performances, innovative and breathtaking cinematography and nuanced storytelling.

Naomi Scott was utterly magnifying in Smile 2, was not expecting her performance to be such an intense yet tragic one-man-show as it turned out to be. I mean there’s plenty of scream-and-shout performances, this was way more than that, I love how much you could read from her expressions and the layering of the amount of stress the character was going through on top of past trauma, grief, sadness, frustration. She really made the film

And then when horror/thriller performances have been nominated and created some of the most iconic characters of all time they lost to very mediocre films. Sigourney in Aliens, Rosamund in Gone Girl, and Carey in Promising Young Woman.

in my mind if any movie was to win an oscar it was midsommar. Out of hundreds of oscar worthy horror movies i could of sworn that THAT movie was one that would have everything the people in the academy like to nominate. like it is oscar coded as hell and still because its horror it's not valid enough. like truly that movie feels like it would have oscar people clambering at it but the fact that it got 0 recognition is just more proof that the oscars are rigged and dont care about what is actually the best but what will make more money

They should also take animated movies, documentaries, Indian movies, Thai movies, Korean movies other than Parasite, movies about health and medicine like Contagion and Super Size Me, movies about autism and neurodiversity, African movies, movies from China, movies from Portugal or practically from any Portuguese speaking country, getting closer with I’m Still Here. The Oscars were created to keep the guilds from striking. Then they turned into a popularity contest, and now they're just a platform for virtue signaling. Horror doesn't need the Oscars, the Oscars need to understand the cultural significance and importance of horror...

@@oscarfun100 I don’t think it’s that deep. Look at the view count, right now it’s about 8k after being viewed after a couple days. Big companies like Time have KZbin channels to post different types of content, but that’s doesn’t mean it all have to match up as if it was being broadcasted on TV. This is clearly an informal little video (it’s literally 3 and a half minutes it’s not some journal piece) and I don’t think there is anything wrong with a lower quality video being intercut between video clips. She still speaks professionally and gives an informative short video. Though I do agree her voice is a little monotone and she’s probably reading from the article in the description box of the video
