I'm a paver and membrane is to stop migration of sub grade into sub soils not just for weed prevention, membrane is pointless if your trying to stop weeds if it's dug out deep enough and 150mm of compact Mot , most people don't know this but most weeds come from the air seeds settling in gaps in the paving add sunlight & water and bingo , people overeacting about this job it's ok, the one thing I would say is your not meant to seal the job for 3 months to allow the salt (efflorescence) to shed out of the block otherwise the sealant wouldn't last 2 minutes

Just park a Range Rover on it for a week or two and see what happens, the sub-base was way too shallow....sad that people pay top dollar for a professional service and the guys doing the job / running the company have no appreciation for the engineering aspects involved. No water drainage allowed for, and the edging will more than likely fail as the edge stones are simply sitting on the sand substrate and held in place by the concrete on the edge.

@@stgray35 glad I'm not on my own. I think similar has been done on my mother's drive as it's sinking where the car wheels sit and you can pick up the edging bricks as they've got no haunches/shoulders or whatever. Stone needs wackering down first then your sand does to then screed it level for the blocks then again when blocks have been laid before brushing with sand. I can't see where it meets the house whether there's a drain channel in
@stgray355 жыл бұрын
Andrew Hollis I grew up around this industry, my dad had his own civil engineering firm for 45 years, and often helped him out. A friend recently had a resin drive done, and what a fuck up, their drive slopes slightly towards their house, but the idiots put the drainage halfway down the drive and nothing up by the house, and used 2” of type 1 before laying it it freezing conditions. So now when it rains heavily, their drive floods by the front door and the resin is now sinking in places , like where the cars mark, he is now taking them to court for a refund so he can get it done properly.

Apparently, membranes are not needed in the vast majority of driveways: www.pavingexpert.com/faqmembr.htm _In the vast majority of light-use constructions (patios, driveways, footpaths, etc) there is absolutely no need for a membrane to be placed between sub-base and the bedding layer: it achieves almost nothing, as a well-selected sub-base material will have what we call a 'tight' or 'close' finish, that is, there will be very few, if any, significant voids. Further: when constructing a sub-base, the good contractor will 'blind' the surface with fines or grit sand to ensure that there are no nasty voids that could gobble up the bedding material._

As I saw 2 tonne(at most) of mot get dropped but on your drive that would only give 50mm which surely isn’t enough or is it because of the ground they needed less? just curious about the site prep as plan to get mine done soon and every quote I’ve had mention 150mm of mot sub base which you definitely didn’t have so hoping you could let me know what they said about that. Also researched this quite a lot as we are having our driveway done at the moment by a company who were given the job on the basis of reputation locally but also on the detailed information of how their drives were constructed. They also did next door's drive so we saw how that was done. Currently excavated to a depth of 9 inches and weed control membrane laid over the entire site. This looks really shoddy by comparison. I have placed two links below which set out the minimum specification for the installation of this type of wearing surface. If you compare it to the work that was carried out you should see that it falls short of these specifications. Pay attention to the substrate depth and the total lack of concrete under the perimeter of the paving. As to selling your property, I made no mention of it. www.marshalls.co.uk/homeowners/assets/pdfs/driveway-garden-installation-instructions/standard-block-paving-installation-details.pdf www.kilsaraninternational.co.uk/uploaded/53199bbbe60f19.58440664.pdf

Mason Ringbinder all you have done is supplied me with links to other companies that do the work. Show me something that actually has some clout or am I missing something? I mention selling my house because of as you say it could be condemned, then surveyors would see that moving forward if of course you are correct.
@masonringbinder6847 жыл бұрын
Yes you are missing something. Lets start with "condemned"; this refers to work carried out on your drive not meeting the require minimum installation standards and not the house. The link includes a PDF from Marshalls who manufacture paving blocks, although they are not the company who manufactured the blocks your contractor used, the code of practice for preparing the substrate will be the same. Forterra who manufactured the paving blocks you have in your drive (FORMPAVE) do not have such a PDF readily available. A surveyor would be unable to assess the depth of substrate used and lack of concrete around and under the periphery, unless of course he digs a trial hole. Your video reveals all of this and in that respect, has some "clout". Send it to Forterra and ask their considered opinion, especially if Abbey Paving is a Forterra approved contractor. It would be interesting to see if their opinion agrees with mine. All the best Mason

Looks great. You should also offer pressure washing. You could make an extra $400.00 at least on top of the job. Send a worker there the day before to prep it so the area is dry when you arrive.

whats wrong with putting hard core in??
@richardwilliams18816 жыл бұрын
Hard core is compacted to form a solid substrate. Brick rubble doesn't compact. Putting bricks is base has no consistent uniform .

I thought the ground could do with a lot more compacting. If that's for a car to sit on. Iv got a sinking feeling about it.

So, they tip material from another job into YOUR driveway. Not taken away and disposed of properly = COWBOYS. They don't excavate deep enough to allow at least 6" (150mm) of MOT Sub-Base = COWBOYS. They don't properly compact the sub-base with a suitable compactor plate or vibrating roller = COWBOYS Abbey Paving don't lay your edging kerbs on concrete and thus prevent them moving = COWBOYS. None of those guys had the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment required =COWBOYS. The Local Authority path was not properly patched at the edge and materials were left on the public path with no regard for the general public = You get the drift. All.- in- all those guys are cowboys and give proper, registered installers a bad name. I'd give that driveway a maximum of 1 year before it moves and loses it's structural integrity.
