How did you come up with attention span length?

By looking at the researches people done. They say attention span is the time that you can focus on a particular task with no distractions. Nowadays, most websites have average view duration of couple of seconds, and same things happens in the youtube videos or many things out there. We just can't stick to a thing for a while.
