@tavisxavier I'm sure that things made or built and left in Northern California are occasionally from very long ago-- but the local material culture before ~1500 was mostly pretty 'green' and sustainable and compostable. Much of it lives on now as dirt. Not a lot of bricks and stone walls or even local pottery (when you can make watertight baskets, do you *need* pottery?). The most beautiful baskets degrade gracefully. I don't know how else to put it.

I participated in an archaeological dig on the Susquehanna River in Maryland, USA before the Conowingo Dam was built around 1980. We found tons of Native American relics that were over 1000 years old! But I understand what you mean. Lol I love European history.

How did they discover that animal dung mixed clay made for better pottery? I have one idea, the potter didn't like a client and mixed in some animal dung to sabotage his work. When the client finally used the pot it turns out it was the best one he ever had and told the potter this. After swearing a while the potter had an aha moment.

Nathaniel Anderson you need to educate yourself to the term "arcade". It originally comes from latin "arcus", meaning arch ways or an arched entry to a walkway. An arcade was a semi-enclosed area with stalls to sell goods. Like, somewhat ,present day farmer's markets. Not pinball machines and claw grabs.

They are supposed to be putting every shovel of dirt through screens sifting the dirt for small items like seeds, small bones, and organic material to actually obtain a date. The finds are laid out and recorded by exactly where it was found. At the end of the day the finds are placed in bags, boxes or glass containers each according to where they were found with in the pit and which pit. The archeologists I worked with never jumped to any conclusions especially date wise. The main body of work takes place in their labs in detailed analysis.
