When it comes to the debate of the Child Sacrifice, I think it's important to understand that we have multiple accounts of this happening from multiple cultures. The Israelites talk about child sacrifices to Moloch and Baal by the Pheonicians, or Canaanites as they were called. This god took on the appearance of a great bronze bull. Athenians were forced to pay tribute in the form of Children or youth to the island nation of Crete, a powerhouse at that time. They were likely sacrificed to their gods, and this is where we see the Minotaur myths come into play. It is possible that they adopted many of the Phoenician beliefs. Other Greek cities wrote about child sacrifice in Carthage and later the Romans did the same. If it was just a couple of instances of this, then we could assume that maybe things were being exaggerated or they were being painted negatively. But when we have so many instances of this bull-like god taking youth sacrifices from so many different cultures over such a long period of time, I think it becomes difficult to defend the Phoenicians and it begins to paint a terrible truth about some of their religious ceremonies.

Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” The fact that this is a central motif of the Old Testament may be evident of a historical shift. But many other texts indicate that Abraham actually did sacrifice Isaac.

The tribes were conceived of Jacob, Isaac’s son, who was born after the “binding” account in the bible. Im curious about what texts you’re talking about, would you mind sharing?

In the villages of Central Africa an infant who died or a miscariage infant were buried separately from the rest of interred villagers, so this practice could have been in ancient world as well.

Good documentary. Very suspenseful and entertaining. Just one issue I noticed: the writers seem to think that only boys were sacrificed in ancient times with few exceptions. For anyone who has read the Bible carefully, the Israelites during the time of the prophets were constantly reprimanded for child sacrifice which they adopted from the Phoenicians (Canaanites). In fact, in Deuteronomy, Moses commands specifically that none of them follow the inhabitants of Canaan in causing "his son or his daughter to pass through the fire" to strange gods. There are many other references to this effect (i.e., 2 Kings 16:3, 17:17; Jeremiah 32:35). Most notably, however is 2 Kings 23:10: "And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech." It is actually surprising that this is not acknowledged, but, I suppose it is to be expected from documentaries that are mostly concerned with allowing controversy to continue and keeping both sides happy. The apparent disconcern with data that does not fit the narrative always makes these sort of documentaries disappointing.

The Bible mentions Canaanite child sacrifice many times. 2 Kings 17:17 Psalms 106:37 Jeremiah 7:31 to name a few. They specifically mention sons AND DAUGHTERS.

@@EX-JW-SJD I don't know more than them. But just because the DNA evidence shows it was a girl doesn't mean that child sacrifice didn't happen. Archaeologists can make mistakes too. Besides the DNA test itself looks very unreliable. What if they had taken another sample? What if that turned out to be a boy? Even if it did, girls can be sacrificed too. We can't blindly believe everything they tell us.
