I've been on a creative journey and every week I discover something new about myself and the way I work, decision making has been a hurdle I've had to overcome.

Oh yes xx I've discovered that my slight OCD is "satisfied" if I can keep my art supplies and environment in good order. It makes me happy that I can look around and see my beautiful art supplies ready for action. It frees me up to then just follow my heart and see where my ideas take me. I feel no pressure to please or impress anyone else and my joy is always the process and surprising myself when I know what to do with the materials.... ART IS JOY ... hugs xx

I've lost my creative mojo. I sit at my desk, look at my supplies, and then walk away because I don't know how to start. I don't know my theme or style any longer. It's so frustrating. I don't feel good enough. This is a good video for me. Thank you. 💓🇨🇦

Alison, if I’m feeling like that I tend to go thrown boxes or a storage area of my studio and sort it out, invariably I come across something I’ve forgotten or part finished and before I know it I’m creating again.

I learned years ago do not over think the process of making art. My art will tell me which way to go, and I just go with it. If it works, it works...if it doesn't, it doesn't. I then start over.

You know Ceri, I worked as a Chemical Lab Technician in Research & Development for awhile. What I worked on was a product that came about from an error made in a lab. Science is a very creative process when developing. And the Chemist I worked for taught me not to worry about mistakes, but that they can become something interesting worth pursuing further. The product we worked on is why we have thinner TV sets. Art is similar in that one needs to be open to the millions of possibilities that can come from an error. So, basically errors are unexpected invitations to something new and exciting that never would have been. Even nature seems to show us that when something like a natural disaster occurs, it can lead a society into new development. We just need to embrace the flaws that come into being in order to see a new and beautiful path before us. I often have found that when I do accept the supposed failures in life, it brings about more joy, especially in my creativity. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Ceri. God bless. Sue 😊❤

Ceri, when I get stuck on a project I'll put it away but I will keep it in the back of my mind (I call it marinating 😊) and it could be a few days later or months later it will hit me what I need to finish the project or it may just be the next step. I don't know if that will make sense to anyone else. It's almost an unconscious thing. You just see a technique, stamp, fabric etc and it just brings that forgotten project right to the forefront of your mind and you know that's what's missing or that's just what your project needs. Love your chats. TFS❤

For the most part, I just go with the flow. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I put stuff off to the side a lot. When I come back to it my creativity has changed and it might work then. 😀

I am a quilter for many decades. I will know what I want to create but never know exactly where I will end up. I start - maybe by choosing a ton of fabrics and just get going. I let my subconscious be my guide. It's when I am not working on a project that the next step or inspiration will hit me. I love this organic process. It never fails me.

The sign of a good craftsman is knowing how to hide his mistakes. Some mistakes turn out to be pretty cool. I'm learning not to sweat the little stuff. When a creation doesn't turn out as I had hoped, someone else will think it's beautiful. I have much more fun when I relax and just let it happen. Thanks! Mr. Ceri

I struggle with this too! I learned years ago, when I started pottery on the wheel, to try and embrace imperfections. My instructor told us, "Relax...if you want a perfect bowl or cup then just go to Target and buy one made by a machine, but if you want something homemade it will have imperfections." I think back to that when I'm doing any artwork or crafts and it sometimes helps.

I let my unconscious work on things. It actually helps me to fall asleep. I will watch a craft video and decide I want to make it but maybe there was something that I thought I could change and make it work better. So when I go to sleep I visualize laying it out. I have created many things this way. Currently I have a project that I did the cover but that was all I could design today. I left it laying out and I will think on it tonight about how I want to decorate the next page. I may not go back to it for a few days. I made some ATC cards one time, printed it wrong from my computer. Ended up printing the mirror image. I still went with what happened and that ATC ended up getting published in a magazine. No mistakes, just your unconsciousness make a decision that you didn't think of, is how I look at it.

Brilliant! Everyone can benefit from this gentle reminder. If I think too many steps ahead, I start to feel a panic creeping in, I then become overwhelmed and end up doing nothing. Seriously. "I am going to watercolor some flowers," is about as far as I allow myself to get as I set up my supplies. Otherwise, I am stressing over which flowers, how many flowers, what season of flowers, in a vase or outdoor flowers? 😵‍💫As I run down that road I end up at, "No one wants flowers," and I put my supplies away. Thank you again. You have made my day.🤗

This is something i need on a loop until i internalize it! I'm definitely one who "works backwards" from "I want this so how do i get there?" The steps are just that - backward - from what i need to do. So many times i start with the "top layer" and you can't do that ( except maybe gel printing!) But i'm learning and getting better at rescuing things. I've definitely learned to set it aside and leave it when i'm not happy with it or stuck. That has been a true revelation for me. Of course, that's why i get behind with the monthly things and don't even attempt weekly "challenges"! Having never done anything without a pattern or specific instructions, i am having a blast with collage prompts and color combos. Still very far from being an artist but learning and having fun doing things for myself ( something else i've never done before.) TFS ❤❤❤

I have been attempting to put together signatures for a new junk journal and I have been struggling, mostly because I too am guilty of trying to figure out the end product instead of just picking out papers I love and letting the process take place. Great advice Ceri. Everyone in my family are artists in many mediums but not me. I joke and tell them my art is my make-up or I often say I am not artistic but I can sure buy it. But one day I stumbled onto Wendy's Journal Adventures. I was glued to the channel. I watched many of her videos over and over and then watched others Gayle Agostinelli, Julie at Camelia Crafts Design, Roxy Creations, your channel and many others. I watched ya'll about 3 months and then I jumped in. I quickly discovered I had a hard time getting out of my own way and just felt like I could not create anything that was remotely pretty. I am one of those that thinks I have to have everything needed before I begin. Trouble is when you do buy all that stuff, you cannot locate it when you need it. So I have now gotten myself organized and as time goes by and I keep at it, I get a wee bit better. I have made about 7 journals and hope to begin uploading videos in the next month or so. All this being said, I totally understand and appreciate all you have said today and thank you for sharing your wisdom. Love your channel. 😊😊

Thank you for sharing these words of wisdom, Ceri. They resonated with me. Often times I don’t trust the process and try to plan everything to a T, but that doesn’t usually work out for me and I get discouraged (just as you mentioned). My watchword for creating this year is “Play”. My take away from this is to remember to walk away or put it away, and to come back to it at a later time. I am learning from you that this is OK to do. P.s. I spied something in the background, and am looking forward to seeing the techniques you used! ❤

Loved hearing your thoughts on decision making and the creative process, Ceri! Do you find there are times of the day when decision-making is more or less difficult? We live primarily in Hawaii and I find the high humidity/low pressure building in the early afternoon seems to make my thinking a bit more sluggish. To combat this, I set myself up for afternoon art and craft tasks in the morning. If I leave it to the afternoon to decide how to go forward, I will probably stall and feel stymied by indecision. Weird I know, but discovering the blessing of morning decision making was a true breakthrough for me!

Yes! Ceri, each artistic decision on a piece informs the next! Beginning with an idea, but responding to what is in front of you, is what it’s all about! Don’t sell yourself short, you have grown a lot since I started watching you. One suggestion, try picking your pallet and then choosing a contrasting/complimentary color and using a couple small accent points with it. You might find that you end up with beautiful results! Keep on creating!!!

I tend to have the opposite type of process. I just kind of audition, grab and gather, and see what happens. Which can sometimes lead to the other issue of just "throwing stuff together" and not liking it. Seems like either extreme is not the best way to work. Perhaps, as with everything else balance will yield better results. Hmm, definitely worth thinking about. ❤

I’m afraid my creative process is constrained by whether or not I can find the supplies I need! These are supplies I have but as I don’t have a dedicated craft room or area, they tend to be a bit scattered! By the time I find them the inspiration might have passed or changed direction but I do end up creating just not always the first thing I thought of. Couldn't agree more Ceri, thanks for this coffee! Last year I did the junkjournaljuly (by Meg) and I told myself I had to only use content from the Daphne's Diary issues I have. Well ... went quite well till I hit a prompt I couldn't think of what to do with it. Only "having" to use DD pages gave such a limitation, sure it made my mind go to terretories never gone before but the restriction it gave me killed the creativity! So .. a learning curve for sure .. last week I managed to make 7 pages in 1 day, not too elaborate but I can live with that .. hitting 65 in 2 months so never too old to learn 😅. Happy crafting Ceri!

Thanks for this Ceri. I am 100% a left brain person with all the anxiety, ADD, OCD and perfectionism that comes with that. Creativity was not encouraged in me growing up. I started “arting” in 2017 because I work in healthcare and needed to see a tangible result of my labor. I believe creativity can be learned and decided I would learn to use my right brain. Eight years later and I am still struggling. One day I hope it will be about the process. Sadly for me, it’s still about the outcome and I don’t enjoy the journey. It’s weird I know. However, I do believe my technical skills are improving so I know one day I will get there (fingers crossed). Thanks for reinforcing that I am actually not completely alone in my struggle. As I listened to you in this video I realized my take and what I do is so different from what I hear people's attitudes are towards the act of creation. Let me say up front, what I write is not a criticism. It is a presentation of another path to creation. This is not a judgment call at all. Simply another approach to a creative end. I never refer to what I do as "my art". For me, art is a Picasso or a Michelangelo. Rather, I refer to what I do as my creation or what I created. Why do I do this? Back in the nineties I was going through a very difficult time in my life. Serendipitously, I was led by the universe to read Aeschylus' The Oresteia. It was as if a voice was telling me to read this trilogy of plays. I obeyed that voice. A friend at work saw me carrying the paperback of the plays and she asked if I was aware of the comparative mythologist, Joseph Campbell. I was not. She loaned me a book she owned that he had written. I did not have a clue what the man was talking about. But, as before, a voice was telling me that the book contained something I needed to know. I kept rereading the passages I didn't understand until a light came on. I understood. In Campbell's writings he discusses Buddhism. In Buddhism the danger of the ego is expressed through the teachings of the Buddha. Throughout Campbell's books (by this time I embarked on reading a very large number of books by him, Nietzsche, Jung and several others), I learned the psychological pitfalls of living too closely with one's ego. The phrase "dying to one's ego" came up over and over. At first I found the idea absurd. Then it was confusing. Over time, I comprehended what was meant. When we look at the world around us through the filter of our ego, we do not see the reality of existence. That reality is colored with our own ideas and attitudes which are reflections of our desires. In the Gnostic gospel of Thomas there is a scene where the disciples of Christ ask when the kingdom of heaven will come. He answers them saying that the kingdom of heaven is spread upon the earth but men do not see it. When I encountered that idea, I understood that our desires are under the control of our egos. We want. We don't necessarily need. It is our attempt to control the world around us that prevents us accepting it as it already is: perfect. We want to mold the perfection of the world so that it fits the desires of our egos. How does this relate to crafting? It struck me as you talked about sitting down to start a project that what you were talking about were the mechanics of crafting. What am I going to create? How do I want to create it? What do I need to create what I want? I am a crafter. As I've commented before, I don't do junk journals. I make story books filled with graphics that support the story I am telling. I don't sell anything I make therefore there is no time frame constricting what I make. And, since I am not creating anything specifically to meet the needs of others, what I create is not colored by outside influences. People are shocked when I refer to what I make as silliness. I don't refer to what I make as my art because I do not think of what I create as being an extension of my ego, that psychological frame of mind that presents to the world what one WANTS to be perceived as rather than what one actually is. There is a connection between myself and what I create. But, I don't create with the thought in mind of presenting something that has been falsely curated to achieve an affect upon others. When I create, I try as best I can to imbue it with ideas and ideals that reflect the spirit of who I am rather than the persona of who I want people to believe I am. With all that being said, how do I create? First I have an idea of what I want to create. It is always a vehicle for ideas. The physicality of the object is not important. It may be a book, it may be a folio. It makes no difference. The important thing is that it is suitable as the object into which I can present my ideas. I see some crafters on KZbin count the number of items they place within a signature. Then, that's broken down into how many of each mechanical object is contained in each signature: how many tucks, pockets, flips, etc. I don't do that. I don't even know how many signatures a project will have until I have finished the story I am telling. So, what's my beginning place? I always begin with a base which is defined by the size of the paper upon which it will be adhered. My go to for books is a sheet of legal size paper folded in half. This gives me a page size of 7 x 8 1/2 inches. My base is usually 6 1/2 x 8 inches. I choose a background from existing digitals or else I combine digital images to make my background. This is what I build upon. How do I design? Once I have the colors and textures of the base, everything else is related to those two things, keeping in mind that I have the story itself that must be supported. The current book I am working on is about the life of a twelve year-old boy growing up in the tenement slums of New York City in 1912. I scour the internet for images that apply to that story. Since I am not trying to abide by a set of rules given me by others, I create out of a sense of paying attention to an inner voice that guides me where I need to go. This is not that hard to do. I don't try to copy the style of any KZbinr regardless of how I like and admire their work. I do not want to be one who follows. I want to embark on my own path of creation. No butterflies, no popular colors, no popular folded pieces of paper will appear in my books. Why? Because I've never needed to include them to support any story I've ever told. And, let's be honest. Familiarity breeds contempt. I do a large amount of creative writing in my books. This has been a talent I've had all my life. I've had several people moved to tears by what I write. I admit I have a talent for words. However, when I am at my best, I feel like I am being dictated what to write. I don't express my ideas in order that they have a specific affect upon the reader. I express ideas in as clear and honest a way as I can. Honesty is the guiding principle in what I create. When we try to copy what we have seen others create, we are not being honest to ourselves. As a result, what we create has a falsity about it that is not removed by the acceptance of others. True creativity is more than making something that is a reflection of what someone else has done. True creation is the act of honestly expressing yourself without regard to how others may view what you create. It is an open and honest expression of one's true self. It is not hard if we do not let our personal ego get in the way.

Thank you for your comment, you have been on a personal road to discovery in your creativity and not everyone is as open minded as you've been or listen to those inner prompts that life gives you. You are right we create in very different ways and chose to call our creations by different titles, but at the end of the day we are creating and taking joy from the process.

This was very helpful to me. I can't tell you how many unfinished projects I have in boxes that didn't go well. Some I have finished and some still sit there. A couple of years ago I got out a box of quilt squares and made a new decision about how to put them together. I finished the top bought the other supplies needed and had a friend quilt it for me. It was great! When I asked her if she would quilt it, she said "if you aren't in a hurry." I told her "I don't think I am, it has been in a box for 20 years." She thought I was kidding. I was not. I also have a problem with starting too many projects at one time and get frustrated because I can't get them all done in the time I need to. Working on that now. Thanks for your good advice.

Well said and very true. Going with the flow more so than perfectionism has allowed me to enjoy creating more. Thanks Ceri 🎉

I TOTALLY get this! So many times especially in my glass work, I start with an idea but it often morphs into something totally different, and in the end it turns out even better than I had planned. When I first got back into papercrafting about a year ago, collage was hard for me as I couldn’t let go and just be random, but I’ve gotten so much better about it now. Once I get that base down, then I let the project tell me what it needs! Love your coffee chats! Happy weekend Ceri!

I love Coffee with Ceri! Thank you for sharing! I too have OCD but also ADHD! Yikes(what a combination)! 🙈❤️🥰… At my age(this chapter in life) I love unconditionally. I am also learning to love myself the same way(corky & all)! PS: this is an example of the ADHD! You are talking about the Art process! Have a fabulous weekend Ceri! ❤
