Coffee grinders are like music albums. The artist releases an album, puts all their art and science knowledge into it, and hopes that the audience loves it, and with some luck it'll go viral. But sometimes people try it, and say it's good, but they can't put a finger on it, but it just makes average coffee. As an owner of the S3, C40, K-Ultra, K6, and ZP6, this grinder so far is average, and I can't find any tracks I enjoy for pour over, aeropress, espresso, or lattes, that will perform better or at least up to par as my other grinders.

@@michaelma2258 All the other grinders that you mention, with the exception of the K6, are significantly more expensive than this Do you think this makes worse pour overs, or immersion brews compared to the K6? If yes, in what ways?

@@RishalRaj I feel like the S3 can do an amazing grind in terms of unimodality, but I have yet to have an amazing cup of coffee with it, so it is always my backup grinder. I'm sure it's the right grinder for a particular bean, of a particular roast level, from a particular roaster, but you would never be able to do a grinder optimization unless you had all the grinders, and usually these days I decide only between the K-Ultra and ZP6. If S3 is the only grinder you have, you can definitely try to get the best cup with it, but if I could make a recommendation, I would recommend a K6 over an S3. K6 is always "almost the K-Ultra/Commandante,ZP6" with just the slightest hint of unpleasant finish.

@@michaelma2258 Interesting! I personally found the S3 to be closer to the ZP6 (which I vastly prefer over the K-Ultra) than the K6, when I initially compared them for a week before buying. Maybe I should try the K6 again, for longer

Hi, S3 is good if you don't make espresso, my S3 can't grind fine enough. But it does a great job for pour over.

Timemore S3 - especially for Filter Coffee (aeropress, V60, frenchpress, etc) 1zpresso J ultra - especially for espresso 1zpresso K ultra - for everything (S3 better for filter than K Ultra; and J ultra slightly better for espresso than K ultra) So I recommend to buy 1zpresso J ultra (best for espresso overall) Timemore S3 is the best for filter (overall) If you tight on budget : buy 1zpresso K ultra for EVERYTHING but only if you don't care about 3%-15% of taste (depends on coffee beans, brewing methods, and other stuff) (3% - 15% subjectively)

Thanks for the great tips. Yes, the K-Ultra is awesome for all brew methods. However, for certain coffees, the S3 produces a better cup of pour-over coffee for my taste. The coffee tends to be cleaner and sweeter. 1Zpresso J Series are designed for espresso, Timemore's C3 ESP also works great with a more affordable price.

I use this for my pour over and aeropress, and the K6 for espresso, but to say that it is better than the K6 might be a stretch. I just prefer it.

Apparently by putting a 10x12x0.1 mm shim in the central shaft it makes the tolerances tighter allowing to grind for espresso

Sounds like timemore could make a slight adjustment to the design of the burr to allow for espresso.

Just received mine a couple of days ago and love it. I am more of a Medium to Dark roast guy and it’s the best grinder I have found for it. Side note I just ordered the K6 and waiting for it to show up. I also own the ZP6 Special and at first liked it better than my K-Ultra and sent that one back. But I think it will be handy to have around for future lighter roasts. Also this is coming from an Option O Lagom 01 102mm burrs sold that as well.

This grinder really shines with medium to dark roasts, especially when paired with Timemore's B75 dripper, which has a faster flow rate. The result is very sweet.☕

R3 is better for both espresso and filter coffee. My S3 can't grind fine enough for espresso, but does a better job for pour over, especially the darker roasts.

This is one of the most disappointing grinders I have bought for an espresso drink as it cannot do it fine enough. For V60, it is great. It’s a pity though as it was being advertised as both for espresso and pour overs. Thanks for the review and I totally agree with you.

Timemore C3, C2's crank fits the S3, but X-Lite's is a bit larger.

try glue-ing 4 ply of paper and put it in between the inner burr and the locking burr plate... quite safe as the burrs doesn't constrict each other, yet it gives another click after 0

If you mainly brew pour-over, I personally found that the S3 delivers better flavor than the C3, especially with dark-roast beans, and its build quality is better. The K6 is more versatile, performing well for both pour-over and espresso, while the S3 isn’t as suitable for espresso.

I think the C3 Esp can grind fine enough for Turkish coffee, though I haven’t tried it myself. It grinds extremely fine. For V60 brewing, the S3 is better, but it doesn't grind as fine as the C3 Esp.

I didn't compare them with a moka pot, but even though the S3 can't grind fine enough for espresso, it handles moka pot grind size just fine.

I ordered this 3 days ago because of a flash sale. It hasn't arrived yet. I have been reading that it does not grind fine enough for espresso. That's really disappointing, especially since what I have is a Flair 58 where you have to grind finer compared to other machines. Maybe I should return it once it arrives? I have the Kinu M47 Classic that is capable of making espresso. I have thought of getting the Kinu pourover burr. But I thought, with just a small amount more, I can buy another hand grinder. That's how I decided to buy the S3.

Same. I ordered from AliExpress 2 days ago. It was a REALLY discounted price. Mine should arrive in about 6 more days. I can't wait to compare it to my Timemore C3s. Also from the reviews I've seen, the S3's primary strength isn't espresso. It can do it, but barely.

@@winexprt Yes, the S3 gave me very sweet coffee, perfect for pour-over. The build quality, grind quality and grinding experience are much better than the C3, though it is more expensive. However, it's just not suitable for espresso, even at the zero setting. It might work for espresso with pressurized baskets or very fresh dark roasted beans.
