Dear Joss, been there, done that. There comes the time in life, when seemingly important and essential things change and become less important. During the last years in school, during time at the university and even during the first years of work I had a hobby. It was incredible important, time consuming and reigned over a great part of my life. I couldn't really imagine what to do, if not doing the thing I liked so much. But at one point in time, without really knowing the exact point, it changed. I missed the first "important" appointment ... and I suddely felt that it wasn't that important to me anymore. One "miss" let to another, and another, and another. Before I realised it, I was on my way out. Not because I wanted to quit, but because life changed and other things became important. Growing up (and that growing doesn't stop at age 20 ... I'm nearly four decades old and I'm still growing up) has the force of a glacier, and like a glacier it shapes the "landscape" of your life. First the hobby is incredible important, then work starts to take over this spot (and here is the tricky part: don't allow work to direct your life in all its aspects) and the endgame is family life! It took me many years to discover that this is nothing to fear or be sorry about. It is alright to do what you like in this moment of life, what is most important to you. Some day you will adjust and find the right balance to follow more than one way of life! I came for "Doofer explains the art of flying" (you have a talent for teaching) and stayed for Joss. ^^ Take your time, follow your new priorities. It would just be nice to hear from you time to time. And watch you flying over Scotland (real life and in the simulator). Well, maybe you find the time - somewhere in the future - to do a little (simulator) sightseeing tour of the various Scottish airports and tell something about them. Take care! - Harry
@Doofer9116 жыл бұрын
Hi Harry, thanks for your very wise comment. I guess my fear and apologies for this video are aimed at a younger demographic who have yet to go through this experience or realisation in life. A younger generation who may not fully understand why I'm slowing down my presence on KZbin. And as you said, one day I will go through another change where I have to reconsider and re-balance my priorities again... probably if/when I start a family. With regards to things here, there will definitely be more videos. I just don't know when they will come along or what shape they will take but I fully intend on uploading some real world flying when I get the opportunity. Take care :)

Hey Doofer - it sounds like you are well on your way to realising your dreams. I had my first flying lesson in 1978 before I could legally fly solo. Circumstances changed and I was unable to continue for some time despite always having a passion for Aviation. Last month I gained my PPL, almost 40 years to the day since my first flight. I never got to work in the Aviation industry but I did achieve my primary ambition, albeit over a considerable length of time. Stick with it and you will get there. Looking forward to seeing you on your channel again when you have some spare time.

Hopefully your conscientiousness will accrue its rewards. I think the fact you done this video explains how much of a great guy you are, not everyone would even bother!! No one should be upset with you for having a real life... Your videos and community commitment has always been of the highest quality and will always be there for people to learn from Joss. I'm pleased you have found a job at Inverness airport.... as it will open doors for your ultimate goal😎 good luck with the future mate, and hope to see you on a live stream when you can! Keep on with the contacts as that could significantly reduce the costs towards yr PPL. My friend did it many years ago and shaved off just over a thousand pound off his tutorials by cleaning planes on a weekend for extra lessons 😊😎 All the best mate.

Thank you Josh for everything. This is not the end of your channel. Your videos, tutorials and LIVE streams are still the best in my opinion. Have learnt so much from you. I must apologize for asking some of the most basic questions on your LIVE sessions. But you always replied. Hope to see you make those really smooth landings, again, this time maybe in a real airplane :). Thank you once again.

Thank you Aveek, definitely not the end of the channel! As for your questions, I really don't mind at all. We all started somewhere. Now I'm working in aviation, I have a lot of simple and stupid questions for my colleagues as I try to learn about aviation legislation and how it affects the business so I'm in the same position under different circumstances.

I appreciate the effort you invested in the FSX Tutorial Series. I've oriented a significant amount of my training time around those videos. I have a few quick questions. 1. Would you be able to draft a syllabus to accompany that series? It would be helpful to know how the content should be studied, what needs to be known before learning other subjects, and which areas to invest the most time in. Maybe they're just supposed to be viewed in order, I'm not sure. Similar to your stated goals of completing actual pilot training, I'd like to push my knowledge as close to the real thing as possible even though it's highly likely I won't actually learn how to fly a plane. A syllabus could orient training time around subjects most applicable to sim flight, considering I don't need to worry about flight emergencies, like electrical failures or other situations. Hopefully your new position in Scotland could reduce the time it would take to produce such a document. 2. Could you recommend a book or two to supplement flight sim training? Maybe I'll end up finding some material on my own. However, since you've invested such an effort into the same goals as mine, I'm hoping you may be able to provide some context to orient time spend studying and executing sim flights. Thanks again, good luck in your new position. I hope you're not actually sleeping on that twin-sized bed behind you. :)
@Doofer9115 жыл бұрын
I'm answering from my phone so excuse the brevity of my answer... 1. I don't have time to write a syllabus at the moment but my FSX Tutorial playlist was intended to be viewed in order. I don't know if it follows real world training structure, it was a progression which I believed at the time was logical and sensible. 2. If you want to use a sim as a training tool rather than a "game", then it's worth investing in actual flight training books. In the UK, there's a company called Pooleys who do a series of 7 books called "Air Pilots Manuals" and each book covers a separate topic such as Air Law, Communication, Navigation etc.

Hello Joss, first of all, there is no need to apologize at all, your every video starts from basics of aviation which have helped us tremendously, in few days I am having my CPL exams and for a good preparation, I am referring to all your videos. I can totally understand what you saying but if you can in free time please keep making each and every topic videos on aviation.
@Doofer9115 жыл бұрын
I'm really glad my videos could help, even at the CPL level. I don't know how many in-depth videos I'll be able to do in the future. An incredible amount of time and effort goes into researching a topic, taking the time to understand it myself before then re-structuring my understanding and planning a video and presenting it the way I do. Then after all of that is the actual recording of footage, editing it, creating artwork to compliment the script and videos, it takes a lot of work and I don't know if I want to commit my time to doing that nowadays.

Dude, as someone with just a few hours under his belt I can say back when I was PPL and gliding, sim aviation was something of a pipedream (I cut my teeth on Microprose F117). I did 10 hours PPL before I discovered gliding. In my opinion, PPL is a rich mans money sink. Try gliding. You'll get all the pilotage you'd get flying powered while actually FLYING a plane. Apart from microlites it's the cheapest recreational aviation I found and is a shit load more fun than a part share in a 150. I knew an airline pilot. He jacked it in for a regular job. Ryanairs' current situation might give you an idea where that's all heading. I thank you for all your videos. Once again, in my opinion, after having a go at it for real I'm happy to sit at a desk and have a go at it in a safe, non life threatening environment. Your vids are the best I've found. For those out there who think I'm a pussy, all I can say is: if you've got the money, time, skills and a spare eight lives to lose then go ahead.

sorry to see you go. very informative. unfortunately, you are not the only one. I am seeing other simmers with much less content if any at all. good luck to you. my family is from aberdeenshire. a little town called turriff.
@Doofer9116 жыл бұрын
Ah yeah, I know of Turriff but never been there myself. Yeah unfortunately flight simulation is a very niche hobby and building a KZbin channel around it can be difficult. Combined with the constant changes that KZbin is making which is driving creators away from the website, I'm not surprised that flight sim creators are struggling here.

I will be interested to hear how much your expert sim knowledge helps you with real flying. I suspect it well help hugely!!
@Doofer9116 жыл бұрын
There'll be some things I will understand well and be familiar with. Things like understanding METARs and TAFs will come in handy. But I suspect that there's a lot of considerations that real pilots have to take into account which I've not covered in any of my videos. For example, calculating the weight and balance of an aircraft before a flight.

So basically what you are saying is life can change and it does, and certain aspects of life become more important than others. I feel that one of the most important things for you is to begin flight training for real, as this is a passion of your's and has been for some time. Yes money is a factor but maybe with this new job you might somehow be able to manage a few lessons here and there and with your already vast knowledge of how to fly and navigate, i believe that you will get your licence in the minimum hours required. Was wondering what was up! I happened to check your channel at lunch today, to see if there were any news. Can you tell us what you're up to at the airport? Is it fun? The closest to me is La Guardia but it's such a nightmare getting in and out of there. I once almost had some gig at JFK in the early 2000s, but they wanted graveyard shift and I wasn't keen! Even that was a bitch getting there on the bus or AirTrain, it's not easy without a car. I'm sure Inverness is a bit easier to access? Aye, nothing to apologize for. If I'd been still working my FT gigs in NYC years ago in publishing or whatever, I doubt I'd have had much time or energy to do regular FT streaming of any sort, much less dedicated flight sim content, or tutorials, plus I had a busy social life at the time as well. Luckily at present I'm dissipated and at loose ends! hehe. Well, I've still been doing constant XPlane11 flights all over the map. Now, Atlanta GA to Princess Juliana is like a routine flight, no big deal, where when I started last year it was a massive anxiety attack trying to land the Airbus there. I also have a better handle on doing a proper descent from cruise alt., and when to activate your top of descent, how to use VS properly, and how to nail landing speeds etc. I'm much better off with the smaller planes and business jets, easier to get a handle on. Been using the Carenado Phenom 100 for much of this, though the plane has some flaws. I still need to master ILS landings. I did apply to work at the Cradle of Aviation Museum here on LI, but so far they didn't seem to have much to offer in the way of actual jobs, I'm hoping it opens up later. I also visited the Farmingdale LI American Airpower Museum last month, which is small but quite fantastic, being right on Republic Airport near the active runway, also offers a glorious shop with flight jackets and authentic goodies. If you do get a chance to do a quick streaming flight, might I recommend doing a Marseilles to Courchevel France, run, that is perhaps the scariest alpine airport short of Lukla! I managed to land but almost buried plane in hilllside, I don't know why, I had my landing speed nailed, and my approach was fine, but the Phenom has no reverse or spoilers. I think you really need a good prop plane to land there safely, it's so tight. It might make a good 1 hr. or so quick "scary approach" video if you ever attempt it! A flight up to Juneau, Alaska, from SeaTac, has become another favorite flight of mine. Anyway Doofer, cheers and thanks for all your help and videos and instruction! It was invaluable as I started flight simming and kept me off the streets for many hours! P. S. If any of us get to Inverness can we look you up? Can we bring a few cases of donuts as well? (cheers, Scott B. from NY)
@Doofer9116 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comment Scott. I'm not comfortable saying exactly where I work but I will say that I work in an Operations Department. Basically I do a lot of admin work and oversee what's going on in each part of the business and help organise things between them. It sounds really boring but having to learn and understand what everyone and each department is doing has been very challenging, insightful and interesting. Plus I come into contact with some really cool people who are always willing to share their knowledge and experiences about aviation. Got speaking to a Dreamliner Captain the other day who's offered to take me on a flight if I'm ever back in London and our paths cross! :O
@thiscorrosion9006 жыл бұрын
Sorry, of course you're not! Silly me. Indeed you should never divulge that info. Nah it sounds like a crucial job, I'm sure it's anything but boring. I might buy the Dreamliner payware plane soon, if I can figure out the FMC and all that. Once you get used to relying on the Garmin 1000 all the time on smaller planes, that is a big stretch to master. Anyway, hopefully you'll I dunno, do a holiday flight or something soon. I learned an enormous amount from your channel, invaluable info., really, and also from watching this pilot Jason Schappert from Florida on here: his actual flight lessons in the air on how to do turns and a perfect Cessna landing were also invaluable. Once he said "look DOWN the runway don't concentrate on the foreground," "pick your aiming point on the runway for touchdown as you prepare to turn to base final and are parallel to the runway," I knew what to do! "And don't flare, transition...." and he's right, if you flare too much in the smaller craft you tend to bounce or float, and this is not what you want. If not for you two I'd probably have deleted FSX and not bothered with it any further!
