You need to track down the demo for this game dude, it went through so many revisions, it's almost a completely different game. But I remember them saying they couldn't get the rewind feature to work properly and it was originally meant to rewind any screw ups/deaths you made ALA Prince of Persia.

I remember the demo being more colorful. I wish we got that one instead of this. I believe the devs got afraid and played safe with the current video game trends at that time.
@Turd_Rocket4 жыл бұрын
@conyo985 That definitely was the case in my opinion. The original TimeShift also featured a slightly different, more cinematic (cut-scene heavy) narrative, with the player character voiced by Dennis Quaid rather than being a silent protagonist. The original art design was much more blatantly steampunk and interesting, more like a BioShock than a Call of Duty, which still shows through slightly in some of the final level design and enemy types, just drabbed-down now to look darker and grittier. I think since darker war games like Medal of Honor and Call of Duty were in full swing back then, plus Far Cry rising to fame and its offshoot Instincts going even darker than its progenitor, they second-guessed their direction. Also F.E.A.R., the one game they knew TimeShift would be compared, had made serious waves, and that slightly monochromatic and dark hallways might've influenced their decision to drab-down TimeShift and make everything brown and grey. Also, Call of Duty 4 was getting a lot of press attention during the lead-up that year, so I suspect they might've taken notes from the screenshots' more "mature" color palette. I still totally agree that this game is pretty damn fun, and I have fond memories of shooting my way through it.

Despite it being very "generic", it falls into the same category as singularity, wolfenstein 09 and a few other games like that. Very "bland", but oddly enough very enjoyable even after all these years. I always had a weird fondness for these games on PC and I still do. It was a time when people TRIED something new with the fps genre, but it all fell flat on its face each time for whatever reason. Soon after this magical period it seems that fps games stopped even trying and military games is all we got since then.
@clydemarshall80958 жыл бұрын
The unfortunate reason for that is probably the sheer expense of producing modern triple A titles and corporate suits, not artists, pulling the strings.

Prey is AWESOME! Wolfenstein 09 is ..... ehh I suggest you skip that bastardize Call of Duty shit and go with New Order. The only time you'll enjoy from the 09 version is a few nostalgic moments... and thats about it. I never really like Raven Software after The Thief reboot, their second failed reboot, I LOVE them during Star Wars though. Hell I give Singurality a chance since people say it's better then Bioshock, but after playing it they are both one of the same, only difference is TimeShift came first, and personally, I enjoy TimeShift and Infinite more because the Level design doesn't make me feel like Earth want to box me in.

There are some cool things you can do with the time powers that aren't touched on in this review (because the game doesn't take advantage of them very well) If you're out of sight and then stop time to move somewhere else the AI will still think you're at your original location, allowing you to do some interesting flanking. The rewind power can also be used to mess with scripted events, for example if a bad guy is scripted to pop out in front of you, just walk past them and rewind time so when they jump out their backs are to you. IIRC you can also rewind time when guards spot you and they will return to passive. Honestly this game would have been much better with stealth elements, which feels strange to say about any shooter.

I love you for making this. (and every other review you made) But the only thing I have to say against this is that Timeshift came out in 2007, while Singularity came out in 2010, so it's more singularity borrowed some light elements from timeshift. While singularity does use time altering powers, it's diffrent from the way it was in timeshift, they're both (for the most part) completely different fps games.

Timeshift is a very under-rated game. It has real flaws, such as some boring to play through areas, not enough enemies at times, the game doesn't make a lot of use of the potential that your time control powers grant you, the enemies who are the most fun to fight against only appear near the end of the game, and the story is so badly told by the game that even after mulitple play-throughs you still won't understand too much of the storyline (seriously, it feels like the story's cut-scenes were mostly omitted from the game, and what cutscenes remain tend to be too short and lacking in detail or meaning), but the game has some really good points. The time control mechanics are fantastic. The graphices are sometimes very good, including the weather effects (such as when you pause or reverse time when it's raining), and the buildings and areas often have a great not-quite-our-reality look that really does gel with the whole parallel timeline theme. The game is long, and can be very enjoyable. I've played through it often, and no doubt will go through it again. And I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun science fiction themed first person shooter. But I do wish the'y spend a few more weeks tighening the game's design (some of the areas and situations aren't too enjoyable; more and better enemy placement would really help), and if they'd actually employed someone to look at the story and who would then actually create text or cutscenes to tell the player what is going on), and I *really* agree with GManLives, that it would be better if you could upgrade your suit to increase things such as: - The number of seconds you can pause time, - The number of seconds you can slow-down time, - The number of seconds you can reverse time, - The number of seconds it takes to restore your health, - The number of seconds it takes to restore your energy, - How many grenades you can carry, etc. As it is, the length of time that you have control over (about seven to twelve seconds, depending on the power you choose) is too short to do eveything other than basic actions, so you don't get the chance to experiment and really feel like you're beinding reality to your will. And it really needed a sequel to build upon this game's strengths and use the time control mechanics for even more impressive results. I would still recommend this game, though.
@kkarx Жыл бұрын
The game feels like a missed opportunity. I think the biggest flaw is the tempo is always the same because it lacks any real story (just a random bad guy trying to control the world is not really a good story). It seems to be unfinished in certain ways.

Time reverse is also a cool mechanic to either get rid of a sticky grenade or, if you're being sadistic, make the same enemy *you* tagged with a grenade die twice (let him asplode, rewind, watch the action replay). Got the game for about 10bux in 2010 and has quite a bit of fun with it on my 360, I'll happily play again, just because, while not being memorable enough to be called a great game, it's a good game, maybe a bit too adequate, but all in all solid and well-rounded (the guns are really cool, albeit a tad underpowered). Also, the game has a flamethrower. Gotta love flamethrowers.
