India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Tuesday (Nov. 4) met the five Indian fishermen, who have been sentenced to death by a court here for alleged drug trafficking, and assured them of "unstinted support" by the government to secure their early release and repatriation. Indian envoy Yash Sinha, who visited Welikada Prison in Colombo this morning, met the five fishermen at the Superintendent's office where he handed over some clothes and toiletries and enquired about their welfare, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said in New Delhi. "He (Sinha) assured them of unstinted support and cooperation of government of India in ensuring that their case receives the utmost attention. He also assured them that the government will make all efforts to secure their early release and repatriation to India," he said. The five Indian fishermen - Emerson, P Augustus, R Wilson, K Prasath and J Langlet, all hailing from Tamil Nadu, were apprehended in 2011 and were sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court on October 30, 2014, for alleged drug trafficking. The court ruling had triggered fiery protests in parts of Tamil Nadu and sporadic violence broke out in and around Rameswaram island as a large number of people staged protests against the Sri Lankan court's verdict. India is pursuing the case at legal as well as official levels with the Sri Lankan government. "The fishermen appeared in good health and requested for permission to write to their relatives in Tamil Nadu and also to make telephone calls. The prison authorities readily agreed and stated that they would arrange for telephone calls to be made by the prisoners to their relatives in a couple of days. Meanwhile, they were free to write letters to their relatives," the spokesperson added. The fishermen expressed their happiness at the High Commissioner personally coming to meet them and thanked him for this gesture, he further said. The issue of fishermen is a very emotive matter for both Sri Lanka and India, where Tamil Nadu-based parties including AIADMK and DMK have been regularly pressing New Delhi to take up the matter with the Lankan authorities seriously and have often resented high-profile visits from the island nation.

BJP's strategy for Tamilnadu Poll is " Request SriLanka to arrest the Tamil Fisherman, insult tamils and rescue them using Swamy's Friendship channel with Rajapakse, So that people in Tamilnadu will feel BJP is the only party that saves Tamil". Swamy showers total insults and uses bullying tactics and refuses to debates because he knows Arnab is trapping him by pointing out that the facts mean that the fishermen were in International waters and not in Lankan waters and these guys were definitely not drug pushers. Swamy is trying to save the face of Rajapakse in this by asking the fishermen to be tried in India. Why should that be done at all. Swamy should just demand for the release from Rajapakse. Why put the fishermen through all these some more. Indians are ostriches on what is happening in Lanka. What court of law ? What democracy ? It's Rajapakse land.

The question from Arnab - When are you (Swami) going to write a letter to Rajapaksa (RP)? Arnab must know that there is a diplomatic procedure (way) for the Indian Govt to correspond with Sri Lanka (SL) or any other foreign country. Swami is not the CEO of India to write a letter has he likes to another country. It’s very wrong & irresponsible for Arnab to suggest the type of content Swami should be writing in the letter to RP. Definitely Arnab has crossed his limits in this matter. Then Swami goes to say that this matter is in the SL’an court. The court’s maybe a lying (or better said as - may be wrong). Why is Arnab laughing & interrupting Swami for? Any court can make wrong decisions. The right procedure is to re-appeal. But interestingly Swami says there is an agreement between India & SL whereby the Indian Govt can extradite the 5 guys back to India & be tried in Indian court. Why is Arnab bringing in Italy into this debate? Is he trying to divert from the fact Swami pointed out? Unless there is a similar agreement between India & Italy … even if there is one, it’s irrelevant here. Overall Arnab does not know how to conduct a high profile debate. I feel India is on the right tract on this matter & Swami knows the diplomatic way to dealing with this case
