I have a step brother that became a Monk...he was anything but as a kid growing up, then he developed a brain tumor and this changed everything. Greek Orthodoxy is pretty strict and all communication is monitored and only through the church. Glad he found his passion I suppose and that he survived the tumor.

What an amazing program. I listened to the whole thing tearing up during the part about treatment of women by the FLDS. Just got back from SLC where I spent most of the say in their history museum and conference center. Rather hilarious that such extravagance is based on a completely ahistorical story. I have also read at least two books on mormon history in a addition to peaking at the book of mormon while at a Marriott. I did not hear any inaccuracies in this program. I am sure this strenuous effort at truth telling may help a bunch of people caught in a web of confusion.
@j_iris4 жыл бұрын
Well done! Totally accurate - even included some things I didn't know as someone who's left the church! (I swear to god the longer you're out, the more you learn about it, I know more about the church now than I did when I was in it!) I thought I knew it all until I watched this, there was a handful of things I didn't know. So that's cool! The only thing I disagree on is the church not being a cult today. If you look at the BITE Model (a model used to determine if something is a cult), Mormonism checks all the boxes. Is it as extreme as other cults? Definitely not...but it still fits. Still a great video. Good job, Dan, and thanks for covering this!

I had a good friend who was Mormon. I come from a tradition that encourages you to inspect your faith. You ask questions. You work it out. To my utter shock, I found out that she didn't have a clue as to what she "believed" she was a direct descendant of Brigham Young. I started to ask questions. She said, you need to ask the bishop about that. She didn't know. I was stunned. You're going to dedicate your life to something that you don't know anything about? Having said that, though I came from a different tradition than her, we got along very well and we shared the same values. We went to a number of their celebrations and we socialized. She was very smart. Good grades in school with degrees. They all were. Despite the fact that she didn't have any idea what she believed, her life reflected a high quality of standard that showed in their everyday life. It took me awhile but eventually I thought, well? Maybe I don't understand how you get there, but proof is in the pudding. It worked. If it wasn't for the crazy stuff, I would probably be a Mormon. But then again, my face was founded by a walkie fruitcake named Aimee Semple McPherson. They call her sister. I call her wacked-out.

I was born and raised Mormon. Went on a full time/honorable mission and was later married in the Mormon Temple. I began questioning the truth claims of Mormonism while on my mission. After much study of the church history and former doctrines, I left the church and had my name removed from the records of the church in 2012. Best decision I ever made. cesletter.org is a great resource on the truth regarding Mormonism.

In the spirit of fairness I would recommend having you look up the FairMormon blogs' point by point rebuttal of the cesletter. You should know that the CESletter is full of trite, old, misleading, and repetitive criticisms. If you decided to believe the claims it means you didn't do your research, which sounds like you just weren't all that interested in it in the first place.

I haven't finished yet, but I've been going through the back catalogue and looking forward to this one. I'm an archaeologist that was raised mormon and yeah...I have Feelings(TM) about it. But as a point of clarification, Outer Darkness is for two people: the 1/3 of the host of heaven that originally fell with Satan, and people who see hard physical evidence of God (like angels, Jesus, etc.) And then deny that God is real or continue to sin on purpose. And they don't get tortured BY demons, they BECOME demons to go harass people on other planets. As a basically decent person who simply doesn't believe in mormonism, you'd go to the middle kingdom. When I was a kid I thought it was weird that the one guy asking for proof was the one that was cast out and when the story is taught it is *heavily* blamed on his wife. Like as an adult I realized how screwed up that was. Also not that it matters, but it's mal-kez-i-deck. :)

You mentioned that some mainstream religions have cult-like aspects. I would agree but also add that some more fringe/obscure new religious movements that often get labeled as cults sometimes come off as more reasonable and chill. For example, Unitarian Universalism, or the Satanic Temple. I find that interesting.

Ben R so it’s actually not as easy as one would think to just leave and go back home. I was never really onboard with the whole Mormon thing I was just 18 and didn’t know what to do with my life and thought a mission sounded fun so I got sent to Korea and learned Korean. If I would’ve got sent anywhere else I would’ve been home in two weeks but I fell in love with the Korean culture and the people there. Korean came super easy to me so the people all treated me with so much kindness. Although I loved the Korean culture and Korea itself I couldn’t stay on board with the Mormon thing especially after going through the temple (screams cult like practices) anyways my mission president wouldn’t allow me to leave so I went out to the clubs one weekend to get lit and hooked up with a lil Korean shortie so that we would have to send me home😂 That being said I have no ill feelings towards the church. The faith it gives my mom is what has kept her strong through a lot of bullshit and I wouldn’t be the man I am today if it wasn’t for her so I’m grateful for the happiness it brought into her life but it’s just not for me. Sorry for the novel😂
