I was the lead investigator of the case, from the conspiracy investigation in 1988 and through to the multiple homicide investigation. I scanned and saved the entire case files before I retired in 2014. There were so many inaccuracies about the case in Wikipedia that I signed up to make it accurate. I just saw a comment questioning Danny’s dad. I was in contact with David, Danny’s dad, David, as many of the families. I was in contact with Richard’s parents and sister and Greg’s dad. Jeff and Alice controlled and manipulated the followers to such a level that they contributed to multiple murders. Why? Because they honestly believed and trusted that Jeff was the true connection to God. Before you judge them, “it’s not what we believe, it’s what they believed.”’ That’s how I approached the investigation and maintained sanity, until the media and trials. I wish that I never initiated the investigation. Because it was emotionally harmful. But, Jeff will never again hurt anyone.

Thank you. I put my heart and life into the investigation. Personally, I wish that I never pursued the conspiracy investigation because that case consumed my personal life during and years after the trials. My initial conspiracy investigation premised the probable cause for indictments and arrest warrants and corroborated the testimony of the state's witnesses at trial. I testified at 3-4 grand jury hearings and at four trials (Alice Damon, Jeff and Ron Luff).

I was born 4th generation RLDS on my mom's side. I grew up in Independence Missouri and while I did not know Jeffrey Lundgren, I went to church with the Averys at the congregation they attended prior to meeting Jeffrey. I remember Dennis and Cheryl as newlyweds and I remember when each of the girls was born. I left the RLDS church myself in 1985 not because I disagreed with the more liberal things happening but because I was sick of all the fighting. I spent about 30 years in other religions before renouncing religion altogether a decade or so ago. What happened to the Averys, who were good and kind people if gullible, really started the process of my questioning the things I was taught in my childhood religion. I still have friends who are in the Community of Christ or the conservative factions that split from it after the 1984 revelation permitting the ordination of women. I can still get misty eyed when I hear some of the old Mormon hymns I remember singing as a child. When I was 16 years old I attended a retreat where an elder spoke to me under the spirit in the same way that Alice Lundgren described had happened to her. It was very common in those days. At the time I was just as emotional about it as she was, but in the years since I now realize that this well-meaning person was taking advantage of impressionable young people by encouraging us to believe that God could speak through people. That sets up a dangerous precedent since if you believe that God can speak through people how can you dispute what is said? In spite of the pain I have felt about what happened to the family that I knew and loved, I still laughed at some of the things that you said. I don't think it's terrible to try to find humor in something so horrific. Thank you for presenting this case. I have read just about everything there is about it and in fact one of the longest reviews of Pete Earley's book at Amazon is mine, but I always like to hear new perspectives.

Just so you know, an AR 15 is NOT an assault rifle. AR 15's are only semi-auto sporting rifles, not rifles meant for war that are capable of full auto or burst fire. There is a huge difference between an M4 and an AR 15.

To further clarify, the upper on an AR will most likely not have an auto bolt carrier group nor will the lower have a full cut out for the trigger to sustain automatic fire. This is really the only gripe I have with this Timesuck. Of course it had to happen during the ATF part, oh the irony. This was definitely a good two parter though.
