Season 1 Episode 1: A trip to Athelney in Somerset uncovers secrets of Alfred The Great's defeat of the Danes. Join the Time Team for another dig into Britain's history.
#TimeTeam #Archaeology #Athelney
Tony and the Time Team travel to Athelney, Somerset to investigate a series of hills - once islands in a bog. After having lost consecutively to invading Vikings, could this have been Alfred The Great's attempt to build a fortress?
Time Team is a British TV series following specialists who dig deep to uncover as much as they can about Britain's archaeology and history.

Ugly hat that Phil wears is called an "Akubra" made from leather (sometimes made from kangaroo skin in local myths). It is an Australian company and the original brand can set you back around $200 Australian dollars for the basic hat. It started off being a farming necessity here in Australia, to keep the sun/dust/rain/flies and bugs out of your eyes and from running down the inside of your collar. Has become a fashion accessory now. Just look at the Australian country music stars. The Akubra hats are pretty comfy (if they don't fit right you can get them "blocked" to fit your head). As they age they will develop the distinctive sweat stains that phils hat shows in later years. I mean if you wear them while working. Blessings from South Eastern Australia, Dot

I watched some of the American version of Time Team. The most you could say about it was it was 'worthy'. Being covered in tattoos and piercings doesn't make you a character. I don't think anyone so much has cracked a joke the whole time I was watching.

@@bobmetcalfe9640 I agree entirely. I was eager to see the US version, but I gave up before the first ten minutes were over. I felt the same as you. It was as though, when casting the show, they said, "Yeah, your diggers have neon hair, piercings and tats? Well, ours have even _more!"_ The main reason I bailed, however, was the woman with the humongous silver earrings. Just seeing the way they weighed down her ears gave me a horrendous headache -- and heavy earrings actually do cause headaches. Maybe she wouldn't have been so nasty if she'd backed off on the jewelry.

Wow, so the very first episode of Time Team (minus the pilot). And not a divot was dug. I'm actually surprised they didn't run into more "scheduled" sites, as here, but then again I suppose that they made a point of not doing such episodes often. The geophys was clear enough to make an episode out of it. I echo other comments talking about how this first show itself has now entered history. Consider that when this aired in 1994, the Internet was, besides being a capitalized word, in its infancy as a common thing in our lives. That dot matrix printer, too. Whew! Time team, indeed.

the fact that a word even existed for it proves that it existed, and there is at least one depiction of it from that era existing…so it’s not a myth but going after it by claiming that it is has become pretty popular

Nick: "We'll turn him (Tony) into an archeologist yet" (37:07). LOL, after 16 seasons or so, Tony described himself as an amateur archeologist.

This ancient documentary is an artifact in it's own right, from a lost world, providing a kind of snapshot of the primitive technologies and personal fashions of that simple time, the nineties. Great Stuff!

Great old episode! 🙏🏼🤗 As a Dane, I do need to point out, that the "Blood Eagle" is much debated about whether it WAS ever used in reality or just as a ritual in sagas..! It's not a certain thing! Could have been cool, if UK was the Danish provinse of "Danelaw" today! SKÅL! 😊🇩🇰💪🏼

There is definitely an old Viking Saga account of it being used on King Aella. The King of Northumbria. It was renacted in Vikings. But it is apparently written in the Sagas. Þáttr af Ragnars sonum

The blood eagle ever really being used is very unlikely according to "The Norse Myths; A Guide to the Gods and Heroes" by Carolyne Larrington (Thames and Hutson, 2017). The story of King Ella is very likely a misinterpretation, where in fact a eagle, one of the Norse battle animals, landed on Ella's dead body and ripped into its back. The only other mentioning of a blood eagle is by Earl Torf-Einar of Orkney on a son of King Harald Fairhair.

@@philster611-ih8te I don't think it was. I only read a few books on norse mythology, but all information I have read about the blood eagle agree that it most likely is just legend and/or misinterpretation.

I'm not sure but I think she changed her focus from enviromental to forensic archaeology and since Time Team wasn't doing much burial/cemetary excavations in the early days, that may have made her less relevant for the series.
