Nobody knows what happened immediately after the Romans arrived in 43 AD, because no Roman fort has been discovered in this part of South East England. Time Team are on a mission to find the missing link. Local archaeologist Paul Wilkinson believes he has already found a military ditch, which would surround such a fort. It's a prime site, right next to Watling Street. However geophysics cannot find any evidence for a ditch. Join the Time Team for another dig into Britain's history.

I absolutely ADORE the expertise of the scientists on this show. They can pick up the smallest dirtiest piece of pottery and immediately know where it was manufactured, with what materials and the entire shape and size of the vessel it belonged to. Blows my mind and gives me goosebumps lol

46:44 I am pretty sure that's a plumb line weight from a groma, which was a Roman surveying instrument. They even had one on an episode at some point used by reenactors in a race against modern equipment.

Haha! Yes, indeed it is. Although I know this tool from using them as a carpenter, and didn't know the name of the Roman tool before. Thank You. I actually just left a big comment about them (and a couple of other tools), but I'm years late, so I'll copy/paste it here where someone might read it instead.. 46:41 Pretty sure that's a "plumb bob." (see OP's comment for the actual tool and name used by the Romans. The basic tool hasn't changed in two millennia though), Not sure if they're called that in Britain, but you attach a length of string to the top, and they're used to build walls and other structures "plumb" (perfectly vertical). You hold the string up where the top of your structure is, until that pointed end swings freely just above the floor, then after you get the plumb bob to stop swinging, you make a mark on the floor exactly below where that tip is. It's a bit similar to the levels the ancients used where a string hangs with the same type of bob in front of a wooden triangle. Those can also have set angles marked on them so they can be used to build correct angles as well. Sometimes carpenters and masons still use plumb bobs today. I always had one because I was a carpenter, then a cabinet builder and woodworker for 3 decades. It's funny because people often can't understand how the ancients could build the things they did, but they had most of the same hand tools we do, so it just took them longer is all. It's also great to know about these things as a builder even now, because they're easy to build if you happen to not have a modern level or protractor, etc. One last trick, since I'm going on about them: water finds it's own level. The ancients could make massive but perfectly level structures by digging a trench and filling it with water. A modern quick fix if one doesn't have a transit, is a long clear tube filled with water. The first time I was shown this was for leveling the courses of shingles on a large house we were remodeling. Simply have one person hold one end, and another person hold the other end of the hose against the corners of the wall, and make a mark at the waterline when the water has found it's level (stopped moving). Then use a chalk line to connect the two points.

I could have sworn i'd seen every episode of TT at least once, yet i've missed this one somehow. Too bad the audio is screwed up. I'm also disappointed that the baby wasn't introduced. As i watch these now that i'm over 60 & am dealing with joints & back issues, i find my focus has shifted from what it was when i first watched decades ago. I can't help being preoccupied with just how much physical labor is involved. As an episode progresses, my knees & back begin to ache from just thinking about it, lol.

I think Phil set Tony up just right with the "little fella" crack. Of course the "little fella," (Rick) isn't going to have a comment when Tony asked, "Did he just call you "little fella?" He just half groaned, half grunted in frustration. (He values his paycheck too much!) Then Tony said, "Shall we deck him?" Then the laugh fest was on. Then Tony finished, "At least we're not super anurated old hippies!" (Anurated?? Hmm.) Thus setting Phil in his place for once. Everyone was laughing in typical but classic TT Style. This classic good natured banter is what makes Time Team special for all of us. GO TIME TEAM!!!

Digital audio compression problems again, when you convert Broadcast TV to KZbin formats. This is why Tony's voice overs are swamped by background audio - all sound levels are equalized in the conversion.

It's done because the interview material is bad, with said person going off on a tangent of details. You don't want to listen to a 2 hour documentary of tangent, you want to keep the core message. So lower the volume and narrate over it.

It seemed to me that at the beginning of the programme that Tony was confusing the first Roman fort ever built in Britannia with the first Roman camp. The first Roman camp would have been constructed a day’s march from the landing site, as he says, but this camp would then have been taken down the next day as the army continued its march westwards.

in the days, it seems the Roman army often built intermediate mini-forts as fortified camps after a days march... the insides would be those of a camp, no permanent structures, but a standard encampment still had an earth bank with some form of a sharpened stakes defense palisade, & a shallow often double ditch.... Tony had a special program on it, I think it was done as part of his Time-Specials series.

While I was certainly convinced that the fort wasn't there, there were a few things I was left wondering about by the end. First, what was the date of that "embankment" vs. Watling St.? I don't recall getting an answer to that and I was curious. Second, I admit I agree with Dan (?) that his ditch did look very military in nature, and the very randomness of the various ditches in type and date, does make me wonder if at some point there was somewhere nearby military activity. TT may just have had the misfortune to be digging in the wrong spot where for the most part there was a Roman farm. Or perhaps that from the start, the assumptions about the fort have been all wrong. That it was more of a temporary marching camp. Up long enough to get people and cargo through to a point more inland, and taken down again afterwards a few weeks later. Leaving some odd remnants of ditches for a farmer later to reuse.

Dear Time team, I was wondering if you looked into the plowed field across the road. From the air you can see a wide mass that heads towards the hill you were digging on. I know you didn't have long on this site or any of the others you have been on but i think you are focusing too hard on the site where you have been digging and should be focusing on what it means. Clearly there are ditches, which i am sure you could have seen by the aerial shots in the helicopter. To see things by air is almost a guarantee that the ditches were in place but the trenches the diggers uncovered also brought forward the various pieces of pottery used during the roman invasion. But there was a road that was obviously part of the settlement on the other side of the road in the plowed field. instead of moving across the site you should have been going lower on the site this is where the geo people come in to survey that area as opposed to the areas you were digging in It is great that the bits of pottery you found and the other items can date the site but more is needed to make a complete picture of what the site was at the time the romans invaded Britain. It could have been a place that was used as a market place by the Brits or even by the Romans. I am sure the romans had slaves after a while to dig the ditches for then rather than the lower ranking soldiers would have dug earlier, slaves were used for various jobs from pandering to house owners whims to digging ditches and building structures for the Romans. it still could be a Roman settlement with the soldiers camped out on the other side of the road with a road leading to the settlement for goods and services for the garrisons of soldiers of the Roman empire.

The audio seems off. Tony will get really quiet when he's doing the voice over, then, once he's done, the audio randomly gets loud again. When he's doing voice over while others are talking, his voice is too soft to hear and the conversation he's supposed to be speaking over is too loud. They mix together and trying to follow what either is saying is really hard to do. I'm sorry but, with the hearing troubles I already have, and with the audio not being what it should, I can't understand what's going on, nor can I enjoy this episode at all :(

I don't know if you can ever find the FIRST fort. When you invade a place, you're not going to put up anything permanent, ecause you're still sussing out the landscape. I'd imagine that the first "forts" for some time are more likely to be encampments -- bivouacs that are easily put up and torn down, and less likely to survive.

poor editing in this one. occasionally, background music is too loud and kind of disturbing (i.e. 7:45). in other parts, talking/discussing scientists are equally as loud as the narrator tony summing up which makes it hard to properly understand the narration (like 20:33 onwards, 22:25, 36:35). nontheless, thank you for another excellent dig episode!

I know this episode was fairly early on in the production and perhaps they didn't have the best editors working on their sound engineering, but there's really no excuse to have a full minute of Tony dialoging over experts explaining things. Maybe I'm missing something but if I'd picked an anchorage for my fleet that contained my supplies I'd fortify that. Sure the fleet could always move but I'm going to need those supplies some of which need to be unloaded so the ships can return to the mainland and pick up more. I'd want a fresh water supply. Dig a trench and some walls tall enough to be an obstacle made out of whatever was handy. I wouldn't move inland till I had my arse covered. To me that's just basic tactics. Not claiming that's what they did. I guess I need to read up on that.

Totally. I wouldn't be surprised if the fort was in that area despite the issues, but maybe just a bit off of the hill it was said to be on. After all, it's rolling country so the fort could be on the other side of the road... or it could be under houses we see near the trenches in the aerial shots, etc.
