It’s a quick and ready interview in some sort of huge RV which inevitably has dreadful acoustics…. They aren’t using a soundman - possibly to save cash…however a spot mike or lavalier mikes presumably don’t alienate the Union…..the camera mike might be good enough usually - it’s the acoustics which are bad

Recently visited the St.Johns museum in London and yes the knights have a lineage to the modern day St. Johns Ambulance but there's a whole lot of mystery around them and the Crusades, Malta and Rhodes. Fascinating. The Knights of St. John was almost a sovereign state- able to issue passports, though that is changing, I understand.
@faithlesshound5621
@faithlesshound5621 Жыл бұрын
The Knights of St John had to pull out of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta as the Saracens and later Turks took over the Near East from the Crusaders, but before that they had acquired some of the properties the Knights Templar had lost when they were suppressed. During the reformation they were broken up and there are various successor organisations in protestant countries including England, often with royal and church patronage. The English Order belongs to the Church of England and seems to own the St John Ambulance Brigade. They have "Serving Brothers" and even issue knighthoods, though a KStJ is not allowed to call himself "Sir." The Sovereign Military Order of St John lives in Rome and is affiliated with the Vatican. Their "sovereignty" is limited to their building. The various "Orders of Chivalry" used to be a hobby for European aristocrats who like dressing up and giving each other medals and titles, but the whole thing has become democratized and there are many such "Orders" of quite recent origin with more or less bogus histories.

@@faithlesshound5621 one might add that the Sovereign Order of Malta, to use its short name, is one of a very few entities with a peculiar status under international law called ‘sui generis’ or of its own kind. In the order’s case this status comes from its history of ruling Rhodes and later Malta but also from its independence from the Holy See. It may have its base in the Vatican but it wouldn’t have an ambassador to the Holy See if it were ‘affiliated’ as you say. The Holy See btw is another one of those funny sui generis entities. Ambassadors are appointed to it, not the Vatican. Another comparable entity, recognised by basically all nations of the world as having its own personality under international law is theInternational Committee of the Red Cross or ICRC. The ICRC is basically a private organisation under Swiss law. It could be like the pigeon fanciers club. However, because this club of Swiss citizens, in the sixties of the 19th Cent. instigated the codification of a hefty chunk of the Law of War in the Geneva Conventions it became a body with a personality recognised under international law. All the nations that ratified the Geneva Conventions gave the ICRC the role of independent guardian of the Conventions and has the right to treat with sovereign nations on a basis regulated by international law. Today, the Order of Malta maintains diplomatic relations with some 100 countries to further its humanitarian initiatives in an independent and apolitical fashion. The ICRC’s diplomatic relations are even wider spread in the aim to promote and further develop the law of war treaties at the heart of which are the now four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and to support its neutral, independent and impartial, humanitarian action.

@@thomasmerkelbach6228 "sui generis" = "of it's own kind." "Sovereign Citizens" in the US have their own mythology, one of the facets of which is the Universal Postal Union, through which they derive some of their imaginary powers.

I'm 43 now, but if I was much younger, instead of having posters of supermodels in bikinis on my wall, I would have much rather a poster of Helen, holding her trowel in an archaeological trench! I give anything to walk a field, go metal detecting, fossilic, or rockhound with her if she ever came to the U.S.! It'd be a dream date to grab a beer and a good meal and discuss our finds afterwards! But a woman that perfect has to be taken! I love you guys!!!

Why would a manor “in a remote location” need to welcome pilgrims? Pilgrims are going to want to stick to the main roadways/routes/etc (Unless it was the place that the pilgrims wanted to go to, in which case it wouldn’t be in a remote location).

Little comment on the answer to the first question - you do have to be Christian to be in the Order of St John I believe, but not to be a volunteer for St John Ambulance. So the bit about swearing oaths etc might be true for the chivalric order but not for the first aid volunteering organisation.

Does Helen suggest that we should all do the right thing with finds? Friday, 18 November 2022 Detectorists' Finds Among Items Reportedly Missing from Northern UK Council Store The Express newspaper has reported UK police are investigating the disappearances of potential treasures from council storerooms: "Metal detectorists' possible treasures 'worth thousands' vanish from safety of store room" (Ian Randall, Nov 14th 2022): An investigation has been launched after a spate of disappearances of potential treasures from secured council storerooms - amid fears of an inside job. The missing artefacts were unearthed by metal detectorists across Cumbria and Lancashire over the last four years, and are believed to have been worth thousands of pounds in total. The finds had been handed over to the authorities, pending an inquest to determine whether or not they officially constituted treasures. However, the detectorists fear that the missing items may now have been secreted into the antiquities black market. One unnamed metal detectorist told the Sun: “This is devastating for us personally but also for the nation. “Some of these items had not been held by human hands since the Bronze Age. “But after we found them and passed them to officials, they have vanished into thin air.” Another detectorist, Peter Major of Barrow - whose finds had included a set of 3,500-year-old, Bronze Age [pal]stave axe heads - added: “For two-and-a-half years I heard nothing, so went to see them and was told that one of my axe heads and all the coins had vanished. “I began speaking to other detectorists and was shocked to find I wasn’t alone.” [...] A British Museum spokesperson said: ‘As the investigation is ongoing it would not be appropriate to comment any further at this stage.’ 'Further'? On the forums, information gathering is in full flow: Post by justinbell » Mon Nov 14, 2022 9:11 pm Missing items from PAS Evening all, I wondered if any other members have had notification about finds being either lost, misplaced or even stolen from / by the PAS in Cumbria". [...] "This topic has 31 replies You must be a registered member and logged in to view the replies in this topic". So the public cannot see what is happening to the public's heritage, eh? Smart move guys. Comments underneath the Express article include: Phoenixxxx 6 HRS AGO So let me get this right? By law you have to give it to a bunch of toffs at the Council and they then potentially go on holiday and build an extension? Rombalds way 1 DAY AGO And they have the cheek to bang on about night hawks and stealing the nations heritage. This is disgusting and I'd be absolutely fuming if it was my finds stolen. Walter Drizzle 1 DAY AGO A cop out by the British Museum... no comment. It's all going the way of not my problem. Then who's responsible for finds to be kept safe. happy wanderer 3 DAYS AGO Do the right thing then find it’s been stolen. Better not handing it in then Let us just be clear, because it seems the Express' journalist is not, if any objects have been mislaid in or from the Preston storerooms, it is not just the finders that are deprived of them but landowners are deprived of their property. Did the BM press release on behalf of the Portable Antiquities Scheme and its partners neglect to say this? paul-barford.blogspot.com/2022/11/detectorists-finds-among-items.html
