Timing your Listeroid the easy way. This method works for any slow to moderate speed engine gas or diesel when you do not have or do not trust timing marks. Put the crankshaft at TDC, "Split" the lobes of the cam shaft at overlap, install the drive at the closest meshing teeth., Important to remember that you cannot be off just a little bit. It is either right, or off by quite a bit because of the number of teeth on the gears, I have timed a lot of engines over the years for people who took them apart and didnt mark the gears or in some cases there were multiple marks or even marks that were wrong. In certain cases the exact overlap split may be slightly either side of center. If your engine ends up one side or the other instead of TDC you always want the split to be before Top Dead Center, never after.

Thank you for this, I used your method when I installed a new Listeroid camshaft into my Lister VA diesel engine, and it runs great.

Another was to set the timing is to center the crank to top dead center - I just look at the key slot on the crank - then turn the cam to right when the intake lifter starts coming up then I drop it down again - u can then set a dial indicator up on the lifter - turn the cam to were the cam lifts to 12 thousands of an inch - then install the ideler gear - then it's in time - turn the crank and just as the dial indicator hit .012 inches the engine is in time - the way he showed works just as well with out special tools - it's the way most do it

If it just suddenly slows down then speeds back up under a normal load that can be a dirty fuel filter causing that problem - another as in generator service can be the spring on the governor - the OEM spring is to strong for generator service so many replace it with a weaker tention springs - if it's to weak the it might not respond to the load quick enough - if it's exstreamly cold fuel doesn't flow well and the engine at time will slow down a few seconds then go back to speed
