What do you mean when you say five degrees? Never done this but need to very soon. Changed the distributor and now get a little bit less horsepower. Just got the light today and yours is the first video I’ve watched to learn about this. Thanks for this info and anything else you’d like to get back to me with like the five degrees. Would be appreciated

Thank you. I’m still confused about something. The idle on my 22 RE engine is supposed to be 750 RPM with the timing set at -5° TDC. When you put the jumper in, that slows down the idle, so should the timing be set with the idle speed at 750 rpm with jumper in or jumper out?

When I jump the TE1 to the E1, on the Diagnostic block my idle doesn't drop. The service engine light does blink, so that is telling me that I have contact Do you know what would cause the engine idle not to drop?

Same issue with mine. mines an 86 though so the diagnostic plug is on the other side of the bay, but still, it doesnt lower the idle at all. Did you find your fix Willie?

+Alyssa Wise It doesn't necessarily have to lower the idle when you connect TE1 and E1. All that's doing when you connect those 2 terminals is telling the computer to stop playing around with the ignition timing (which it does under normal conditions to smooth out the idle and help with emissions) so it'll hold it constant so that you can set the base timing with the distributor. If you didn't tell the computer not to monkey with the timing, then when you looked down with the timing light, the reading would be jumping around all over the place and you wouldn't be able to tell where it was set, much less where to adjust to.

The engine, a 4-cylinder 22RE, on my 89 Toyota pickup got wet, and I had to change the airflow sensor. Although doing that got the truck going again, I might have thrown the timing out while trying to fix it because the idle is still very rough. Can I make the timing better from just adjusting the position of the distributer without necessarily using a timing gun? Another thing is that I think there's too much grease build up on the timing cover and balancer to see a degree setting, or does the gun somehow let you see what's needed even if there's grease buildup covering that area? Thanks.

i read on a forum that the vacuum lines have to be off and capped before setting the timing is that true. did you achieve the same thing by jumpinng the terminals?

Jumping puts computer out of loop. Otherwise, computer tries to adjust timing while your setting.

+nw guy I was actually looking for a video for this and you posted a hour before. I was curious. Did your check engine code read 41 or 31. Mine reads 41 and runs sluggish. really boggles me. I've replaced a lot of parts already. Distributor, plugs, wires, etc. Any thoughts?

I'd look at your TPS, if you're still having issues. You can test it (will be doing a video eventually) or replace it. It's a little spendy, so worth testing if possible. Good luck!

Check your tps (throttle position sensor) on your throttle body, plenty of forum posts on how to adjust it.

It tells the computer not to advance or retard the timing automatically. It essentially puts everything in a "steady state" so you can ensure you have the distributor at the right position.

Thanks for this! You got a diagnostic code there btw. I couldn’t see it so it might be something else but looks like 31. Check engine will flash steady if no codes and will flash with long breaks for one digit codes or like yours (and mine did) will flash a series of times short break long break and again for two digit codes.
