Timing an Elna 62C Sewing Machine

A video of timing a classic sewing machine that I found by the side of the road (really!).
I sped up the video a bit so it wouldn't be so tedious.
I've corrected the captions.
One thing that's not very clear is the position of the hook, since it can't be seen in the video. The hook needs to be aligned right at the needle, then the needle is raised by 3/32".

I appreciate the effort you made to provide these instructions, and I now know exactly what to do to set the timing on my machine after replacing the hook pinion gear. I didn't realize I had to disconnect the drive belt gear to set the pinon properly. Thank you for demonstrating how to do that, and your idea of using a piece of paper to get the measurement is inspired. Thank you!

I dropped off my machine after replacing the motor brushes because now the timing is off and I have a repair manual but it is not written for someone that hasn't done this before and really doesn't make complete sense, the manual has many steps skipped and that is why my machine timing is off now! Anyway after watching this and a video on how timing works I am picking my machine up and saving the $100 because they said it would be 5 weeks and I want my machine back. Thank you for the video. Also in watching the timing video that explains timing in detail, I think this timing also changes the feed dog timing as well. If you only need the needle timing you would adjust the cam closer to the needle. But I will get back when I finish. I may take my own video but not promising! :)

Hi any chance you can re-do this video with better sound and explanation and at normal speed. And a view of the hook position would also be essential. At the moment its very hard to understand.

Please turn on "CC" closed captioning. I'm busy with other projects but the hook position is aligned with it's point right where the needle comes down. It's held there while the needle is raised 3/32 of an inch.

The proper way to do it is to have a little clamp that you attach to the needle bar and then a little piece of metal, plastic or wood that is the right thickness. Could be between 0.1" to 0.09". You get the needle to the bottom-most position, set the clamp on the needle bar with the little spacer (0.1" to 0.09" thick) between the clamp and the bushing (non moving part) of the sewing machine. Tighten the clamp, remove the block. Now you start to slowly rotate the handwheel toward you until the clamp kisses the bushing. At that exact point, the needle and the tip of the 'hook' (metal around where bobbin sits) should be perfectly aligned. That's proper timing.

Super! Have the same model and before I can solve the timing I need to find a solution (other than WD40) to unscrew the totally stuck screws* I going crazy....

I time this machine again at the end of my other video on replacing the friction wheel. There are some other camera angles. Not really sure what to do about stuck screws though.

It's described in the description above. The hook is directly below the needle when the needle is 3/32" above it.

I assume you've long since figured this out, but the hook point needs to be right at the needle. Then the needle is raised while the hook is held. I'm sorry this wasn't very clear.

Where is the hook position when you align it? This is an exceptionally poor instruction video. I'm no better informed at the end of the video as compared to the start of the video. How and where does the hook grab the thread? I'm lost.
