Timing belt change - 1kd Toyota Hilux

Gday and welcome to FOORD offroad
This is a video I have made on how to change the timing belt on a 1kd engine
This engine is found in the Toyota Hilux, Toyota Prado and Toyota how’ve vans from 2005-2015
The procedure is the same for all these vehicles however the van will be hard to get access to the belt.
Before removing the belt make sure the marks are lined up.
Make sure you get a kit with a hydraulic tensioner in it.
Make 100% sure the marks line back up when you put the new belt on.
Always turn the engine over by hand first before starting it, if it doesn’t turn by hand then the timing is out and the belt is installed wrong.
DO NOT turn the engine over with the timing belt removed.
The timing interval for these engines is 150000km
A timing belt change is not recommend if you don’t have mechanical knowledge. It is a very important part of the vehicle and needs to be done properly.

Suggestion replace the old seal over the new seal then tap the old seal to drive new seal into place.

Good video bro. I just purchased my new kit today and will change it sometime this week. My only concern is how much lbs torque should I tie the tensioner bolts and if should I put loctite on then also ?

Not sure what the torque spec is, best to google it and only need locktight on the cam bolt

I don’t really care for genuine, way over priced for the same thing in my opinion, some things yes but majority of aftermarket stuff these days is pretty decent quality I try to use gates for timing kits but they couldn’t get me one in time so used the repco one this time round

Hello, a question when you loosen the camshaft gear, is the truck in neutral or gear? And when you adjust the gear, is it in neutral, shift or handbrake? I am from Argentina, very good video

It won’t matter when undoing it but when you turn the engine over at the end it needs to be neutral

How often do they usually get done? My one has just come up 100,000 since it was last done (according to the sticker) thought they should be done every 100,000 but have had people tell me 150 is is fine? And good ways to check it?

Ther interval is 150km A lot of mechanics will set the reminder early because most people ignore the light and then there goes the engine There is no harm in replacing it early though

Hi, do you need to torque the bolts for the tensioner and pulley ?

The spec is 13nm for the two tensioner bolts and the pulley bolt is 35nm according to Toyota they both don’t seem super tight when done to spec, I prefer to just do them with a normal ratchet and feel how tight they are

Hey Foord how are you? Do you have the torque value for the cam shaft oil seal?

The seal just goes in until it’s flush with the edge and the camshaft bolt gets done up to 98nm

Suggestion: after putting fresh cam seal on shaft use old seal back on shaft before tapping new seal into place with old seal acting as a protection.
