You have to remove the radiator, fant etc in order to remove the cover and access the belt right?

Yes, you can do it by only removing the fan but it's tight and there is a high risk of damaging radiator fins.

Why did you take the off the valve cover? Is that necessary?

Not necessary for replacing only the timing belt but I did the valve stem seal replacement at the same time kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIK9oqmYirt2gc0

Self explanatory video: removal of parts to reach the timing belt, replacing the timing belt taking care of crank and cam shafts alignment, put the parts back in inverse order of taking apart. As is a non interference engine very good for learning.
