Thanks for the great video, actually the only one on YT who does the tensioner install without the specific tools (for the eccentric pulley & Hydraulic tensioner). Nice idea about putting the belt on eccentric pulley on first, timing belt second and then Hydro tensioner last... pretty much negates the need for the specialized tools. The only thing I would add, the grenade pin shouldbe easily removed and reinserted once you have the tension 100% correct. In your case, i probably would have backed it off a touch either way till you found that sweet spot. Regardless, great video!

Thank You . I have mentored a number of apprentices over the years . I have a few that I still talk to .. One of them recently contacted me and said he would never forget something I told the service manager at the dealer we worked at, because now he understood . I always had some kind of angry heavy metal playing on the radio . One day the manager was trying to talk/bitch to me about something, but the music was getting to him I'm guessing , and he said , "How can you listen to this music? It makes me want to hurt someone" I replied , "This music keeps me from hurting people" as I just glared at him ... He finally walked away lol

Hey Ken. Nice work. One thing I just want to mention for your viewers is that there’s a specific procedure for the tensioning process for the timing belt that is crucial. I didn’t follow it exactly and it cost me an engine, 30k miles after I changed the timing belt. Those two little holes in the tensioner need to be horizontally straight across from each other. You also need to let the car sit for about 15 minutes and make sure the pin goes back into the hole of the auto adjuster. Very important. It’s kind of a weird setup, unlike Toyotas and Hondas. Just wanted to mention this and I mean no offense to you at all. Thanks for the video!

Hello, I might add to this comment, that this engine actually has 2 tricks not addressed in this video. (of course mate, not in the spirit of discrediting or else, only in the spirit of helping the community even more :) ) One is the beforementioned by Anthony F here. The pin on the hydraulic tensioner must remain FREE to move after adjusting the main tensioner with the special tool (or whichever other tool you use for that). When adjusting the main belt, don't remove the pin yet. Adjust the main tensioner almost until the two holes line horizontally (to give you a visual idea), and temporary secure the bolt, and then check if the pin still moves freely inside the hydraulic tensioner. Ideally, here you want to use a torque wrench for securing the bolt on the main tensioner to 48Nm (according to the manual). Then check again if the pin still moves freely. If it doesn't, then you need to play with the main tensioner more. Then wait 15 minutes and see if the pin can still be moved, and that you can then take it out and put it back in. According to the manual, in the end, the pin should not protude anymore than 4.5mm (3.8-4.5mm) out of the hydraulic tensioner but to make it easier you should definetely check that you can be able to reinsert the pin. If you already removed it, and the pin can't be reinserted, then you should remove the hydraulic tensioner and compress its piston to its original position where you could insert the pin again, and start over. The second trick is that the oil pump sprocket can very well be OFF by 360º even if the aligment mark is aligned. The way to check if you are doing it correctly is by removing the service bolt located beneath the exhaust mainfold near the driver's side (the one you said not to remove in the video), then inserting a screwdriver in this hole. If the screwdriver goes in by at least 60mm, then the oil pump sprocket is in a correct position to be aligned by the marks. If you can't insert the screwdriver in this hole, it means that the oil pump sprocket is not ready to be aligned, you must turn it 360º (a full turn) so when it aligns again, the balancer is on the correct side. Another method to use instead of using the service port bolt and screwdriver, is the "gravity check", if you spin and let loose the sprocket if may gravitate away from the aligment mark, or gravitate towards the mark, and if it gravitates towards the mark then you have it on the correct side. I suggest your viewers also to check the youtube video called "How to Remove and Replace the Timing belt and Water Pump - Mitsubishi 2.4L SOHC Engine PART 3" for learning the Oil pump sprocket alignment part using the service bolt and screwdriver method. (this guy explains it correctly, but then he follows another procedure for adjusting the main tensioner on the belt by removing the pin and then hoping that the pin goes back -and if not, he must remove the hydraulic tensioner and compress the piston-, where if you don't remove the pin in the first place you avoid this risk, that's where this guy could have make it better) There's another video called "Mitsubishi Timing Belt Tip`s" by "homotorsports" showing the "gravity method" for aligning the oil pump sprocket. Don't mean to discredit in any way your great video, but I feel it's important to share these tips to your viewers especially if doing a timing belt job on this engine Oh, and you can google the manual for the 4g64 engine where you can find all this info as well Hope this helps!

the bolt you said not to remove Identifix says to remove and install a allen wrench to make sure it is in the correct position according to them it will line up 2 different ways have you run into that

How…in the world…did you get that water pump to line up? This is where I’m stuck. It’s very difficult to get it on that water pipe, but when I do, the bolt holes aren’t lined up. I’d have to yank it almost 3/16 of an inch and that’s very difficult to do when you have a gasket in place and zero room

I just did an 07 gallant, and the tensioner seemed weak so I cranked down on it. How tension should be on that timing belt oh, they are not interference engines apparently because mine ran good after a jump time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
