I just did it. Pain in the butt having to jack the motor up and down between steps. But beats the hell outta having to buy a crane and take the gearbox, both manifolds, the fuel rails and the air con off. Not to mention the amount of harnesses and connecters you have to fiddle with and remove from the engine block. It actually easier with the engine in, in my opinion :)
@rallyengr4 жыл бұрын
The 2-3" of room you have to work with and maneuver pieces around between the engine and side of the engine bay doesn't make it fun, but it's a lot easier than pulling an engine.
@dingpongchi6327 жыл бұрын
according to the Mitsubishi shop manual, you can use two large paper clamps to clamp down the timing belt on to the cam sprockets then you run the belt down to idle pulley side.
@BoostedFilms7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that and zip ties were a common approach if you don't have the special tools.

.Balance shaft tensioner pulley, be sure the lip of the pulley is outwards, not in(against the wall of the oil pump) .when installing timing belt, install the belt on both cams, work your way down onto the idler pulley, then onto the oil sprocket, crank sprocket,and finally the tensioner pulley. That way it doesn't throw off the lower b/s belt.

Awesome video dude!! Another tip is you must turn the crank 2-3 times once tension is done. Let it sit for 30minutes and see if the pin in the auto tension slides back in. If not you’ll have to set the tension again :)
@757SuperSteve233 жыл бұрын
In the end the pin needs to go in freely? When I set the tension I didn't use the md998738 because I forgot but my pin did go in and out freely when I torqued down the tensioner pulley.

The thing which you’re calling front balance shaft is actually oil pump . Don’t know if you have noticed but when you removed your crank pulley , it was matching with timing mark on cover but the oil pump pully was out of mark which is pretty normal.
@BoostedFilms6 жыл бұрын
Hello. Yes i am aware the front balance shaft is also the oil pump pulley. Sorry if i did not mention that directly. As for the timing marks not matching, if you are talking about 3:53 in the video, the Timing Belt is already off.

Just did the timing belt tension on my friend's EVO VI. Had it set as per Mitsu's procedure, where the pin has to slide freely in and out of the hole in the autotensioner after 2 spins of the crank, and waiting 15 minutes. But the thing is, the final tension (just deflecting the belt between the cam sprockets, and the longg run lower down between the idler pulley and the front balance shaft sprocket) seems a little bit loose to me. The actual tensioner pulley/happy face is in the same position as in your video, if not a bit further anti-clockwise/more tensioned. Thoughts? Is this just the auto-tensioner setting things the way she wants it to be, and me thinking the tension needs to be stronger than it should be on this engine?
@50842047 жыл бұрын
I think there is a little mistake (I might be wrong, do not remember now) in the video. Initially, the happy face must have 'eyes' up, and then you rotate it clockwise down, along the belt rotating direction. Let me check it..
@50842047 жыл бұрын
Yep, I was right. Chilton's says clearly, put the belt anticlockwise starting from the intake camshaft sprocket, tensioner pulley (happy face) must be upwards, initially adjust the tension by spinning it clockwise.

@jbahia27 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm from Brazil and after have the timing belt changed the engine of my car started having a kind of vibratiion. Its like if the engine were lying somewhere in the chassis of the car. Do you think this could happen if some mark point were mismatched? Tks
@SylasG7 жыл бұрын
The front balance shaft that turns with the oil pump pulley is out of phase. It can be lined up 3 ways and 2 are incorrect because it's a 3 to 1 gear reduction. When lined up the proper way, when you slightly turn the gear it will want to rotate back to the mark when you let go. When lined up the wrong way when you rotate it a bit and let go, it will continue to turn away from the mark.

@BoostedFilms5 жыл бұрын
You want the tensioner pulley adjusted to where the grenade pin is loose in the auto tensioner. In the video, When i did the tensioner pulley adjustment you can see the grenade pin rotate so you know it is loose and free to remove. A loose grenade pin provides maximum travel from the tensioner and is what you want.
@Thatcarguy875 жыл бұрын
I have purchased the tension tool to adjust the tension but when i tighten the 14mm bolt when set the pin is hard to remove. Ive tried multiple times all day and still no loose pin. Im at the point of stripping the tension pulley 14mm bolt from trying to set tension

Testing my memory a bit here. but i think the balance belts marks were always where a bit to the right (clockwise) of where they were suppose to be. The 2 balance shafts are designed to work together. You can't just remove the belt from one balancer without disabling the second. The oil pump needs to come off and a stub shaft and block off bearings installed in place of the balance shaft. I highly discourage just removing the belt.

Why do people not run the. Balance shaft? I got a 97 eclipse 2.0t just wondering
@BoostedFilms6 жыл бұрын
Because its another belt that can break. The balance shafts we're seen more as a comfort item, and most people don't drive DSM's / EVO for comfort. So they remove the balance shaft belt to reduce the chance of it breaking and destroying the timing belt in the process. However, that is basically the old way of thinking. People now are more concerned about the actual harmonics of the engine that the balance shafts help with. So do more research and decide for yourself if you are doing a belt job soon.
