I'm not sure what you mean by "pull it all the way forward." Another way to make sure the VCT sprocket is reset properly is as follows. Loosen the cam sprocket bolts both intake and exhaust. Then set the cams at TDC and use the bar stock in the slot to hold it there. You completely unscrew the exhaust cam bolt (DO NOT loosen a tight cam bolt with the bar stock holding the cam. You will break the cam!) Pull the sprocket assembly off. You will notice the big hole (opposite the 3 little holes) is the hole that the tab on the back of the sprocket assembly goes into. Rotate the ring until this big hole is at 12'oclock. (note the engine is slightly tilted forward so it's relative to the engine, not just straight up.) Then put the cam sprocket assembly back on making sure the tab drops into the hole. Install the belt set the tensioner, remove the bar stock, Tighten the exhaust cam bolt to 80ft-lbs. If I remember correctly the intake cam bolt is 50 something ft pounds. As is shown in the video you will need to put a wrench on the hex cast into the cam to tighten/loosen the cam bolts. Also FYI the exhaust cam bolt is a "reverse" Torx head. I found that a 16mm socket fits over it perfectly. I've seen it demonstrated elsewhere that the TDC peg is useless for this engine. The engine I saw it demonstrated on the peg put it at several degrees BTDC. Just use a dowel rod / screwdriver in cylinder one to find TDC. Also note at TDC the keyway in the crank will be at 12'oclock to the engine. about 12:10 relative to straight up due to the engine leaning forward slightly.

Yo. Thank you for this simple fix. I was mildly panicked when my zx2 was idling poorly after I changed the timing belt and water pump. I had no idea that a few degrees of rotation on the cam could make such a difference. After watching your video and applying your techniques, my car now runs perfectly, almost like new! Thanks again

thanx,video helped alot.had a belt break so I put it all together by spec and once it got warm it would stall out constantly and had a real low idle. this video helped me fix the prob. I like videos that go straight to the point without alot of useless blabbing bout nothing. good job Oz.

I have a '98 Mercury. I found TDC by looking at the crank. One video said to get the key on the gear pointing to 12:00. That works. But you also have to put the crankshaft pulley on the gear to turn the crank (always clockwise, never counterclockwise, or you will get slack and your timing will be off) and guess what? There is a timing mark on the pulley. You can even bolt it back on the car at this point, because dang. You already have the belt on.

The reason why only the exhaust cam has variable cam timing is that this was Ford's way of eliminating the EGR valve that their previous engines had. Ford's previous engines did not have any sort of variable cam timing and they contained an EGR valve for emissions. Ford introduced the variable cam timing on the exhaust cam as a way to eliminate the EGR valve.

dude I fucking love you I've re done my timing 5 times now with the screwdriver and to spec and kept getting this code. you are a life saver!!!! thank you for the great video and all the info

When you pulled the camshaft all the way forward, did you tighten down the sprocket bolt while holding the camshaft forwards? or just simply moved camshaft forward till it bottomed out, then put it back in its original place?

+Alexis Gutierrez moved it forward, then i tightened it to specs

Hey. I have a mercury cougar 2001 Zetec 2.0 VCT motor and after replacing the timing belt, the bypass roller bolt has already broken twice. What could be the reason?

Good video. Could you share the vct connector pinout please? I'm trying to install a new connector in my 1998 Ford Contour because it's missing. I have 2 wires, one Black/Red and the other one is Green/Orange.

so i installed push button start system in my zx2 178k MTX, turn it on with the button, then i turned it off and the on then off then on then off, at the 5th time that i dis this consecutively, smoke came out under the hood on the passenger side. then the rpm's went low and then the car died, since i started it on and off and on and off , would there be a chance that the smoke was caused by the timing belt jumping or something for starting in and shutting it off consecutively so quickly? car now starts , rpms go as normal, then they slow down and then the car dies, unless i give it gas. as long as i give it gas the car will stay on but as soon as i let go , rpms go down and it dies.

Ll Lock I don't think that would do anything to the timing. If Skokie comes out again just make sure to see exactly where. For the low idle look into the idle air control valve might be stuck

Thanks for the reply. I was able to find the culprit. There was a thin small hose that comes off the exhaust manifold( imposible to see from top and hard to see from under). Seems that due to pressure build up by turning the car on and off 5 times quickly. the "unsecured" hose had come off and was causing those issues.

Im working on a 1998 escort sport zx2 will this work on that car Im getting (2) codes first is p0340 nevxt code is p1383 what you think should I fix the cam sensor issue frist or is it the timing I did a belt on this car lower idler pulley came apart
@patrickcannon33796 жыл бұрын
I just had this happen on my 2000 zx2 did you ever find the fix?
@Dwrecksk8Yo5 жыл бұрын
Both of those codes are from the same issue he is discussing here your timing is off. Everytime I do the timing on my zx2 from rebuilding the head or block or whatever your doing I set the crank a couple degrees advanced and then I put the vct thrust washers( the small cam bearing with 3 oil holes and one locating hole for sprocket he held up in the video) locating tab hole a little past 12 o clock and then slide exhaust sprocket on some of the way then rotate until locating tab goes into locating hole then hand tighten oil feed sprocket bolt which is an E 20 inverted torx. Then put belt on and follow revised timing procedure from technical service bulletin then I rotate the motor by hand one time clockwise until connecting rod reaches pivot point( crank will move but cams won’t) on TDC compression again and I see where the crank rotates but screwdriver in spark plug hole doesn’t move and i go past the middle of that area that the cams stay still by a little bit but not enough that the screwdriver starts moving down again then I check the slots and make sure the intake is dead on TDC and that the exhaust is within a couple degrees as it’s natural for it to move a little bit off from vct oil pressure operation and then if I see it’s good I rotate the crank back to the spot where it’s right in the middle of the connecting rods pivot aka TDC which is like hardly turning it back at all so be careful and do it very slowly then I put the valve cover back on and plug vct solenoid in and put serpentine belt back on and start the engine let it run till operating temp then shut it off and open oil cap to check TDC on exhaust cam and check on crank and if it’s all good reinstall timing cover ect and it the lack of a check engine light should be verification enough especially if u start the engine a second time and no dtcs are present but I check with my eyeballs anyways and I know it seems ridiculous to do it this way but when u find out there are variables such as. Cleaning the oil passages of vct and removing sprocket which makes all the oil pressure have to build in the sprocket again which throws your timing a little tiny bit than you find a method that works and stick with it and I’ve done this method no less than 50 times because of my obsession for making everything better on my zx2 which idles as smooth as any car by the way. People say it inherently has rough idle which is true bc of no egr and valve overlap from vct and many other things but with it being intact it’s perfectly smooth and has a negative .8 long term fuel trim and stft hovering over and under zero by 2 percent at idle and no more than 7 or 8 points on short term under load and most driving conditions ( to many variables to test at all times. Hope this helps

Have you looked up the difference from a vct and vvt solenoid ?
@claudespeed2774 жыл бұрын
@@OzMechanics the vct soleniod never shows up, just the vvt. I basicly have the same engine. Mines a 99 contour with the 2.0l zetec. Have both the p1383 and p0340 camshaft position sensor malfunction. U have a link to the sensor u bought?
