How to time the camshaft on a 5 horse model130... Briggs engine that has a roller bearing on the crankshaft. Timing the cam on these engines is more tricky than usual. since the normal timing mark on the crankshaft is covered by the roller bearing. There is an extra dot timing mark stamped into the crankshaft counter-weight to be used to time the camshaft. I show how this works on the vid.

I am working on one exactly as you described. An old generator that has been sitting in a garage for 20 years, Your video was extremely helpful getting things back together correctly.

Glad it helped you out. I actually had to refer to my vid about the Briggs racing con rod, as there is no marks on it to show which way it goes! Hope you get your generator running well.

Thanks your video was very helpful I have a 5 horse off of an old generator mine is a 77 model and I took out the crank to have a keyway cut in it and didn't mark the timing mark and couldn't find the way it went back and I watched your video put it back together and it ran how it was supposed to.

Thanks that was helpful, pulled timing cm out before I checked for the dots and mine has the bearing and No dot on the gear below the bearing, and I was stumped as to what a stupid setup! so thanks it is helpful to me.

Yes, offset flywheel keys are an option also. I think you are right, they probably only work with the electronic ignition Magnetrons, as the points wouldn't close at the right time.

Is it possible to beef up the timing to make more power?

that bearing slides off so you can see the dot on the gear ( right on the teeth)

Pull off the bearing and there is a Dot on the Timing gear just line up the DOTS

Perhaps, if you advanced the timing 1 tooth, you MAY make more high rpm power, but I am not sure, since you would open the valves sooner, but also cloase them sooner. Longer duration racing cams are availible for a Price!

LOL !!!!! :) You got that right Buddy!!!! Those were the first words out of her mouth! I am thinking I am going to have to go to a toy store, and get a whole herd of the little plastic Elephants, to try to reduce the stuffed Elephant count that I owe her! She saw one made from paper in a Kinder Egg, and liked it, so one of those would do also. What do you think, would I get some funny looks buying a box of 50 Kinder Eggs!!!!? :)

Really, I will have to try to remove the bearing, I thought they would be on there tightly!

Is there a spacer between the bearing and gear on the crank? I have the same engine but it doesn't have the bearing and I wanted to get a side cover and bearing on the crank.
@ChargerMiles007
@ChargerMiles007 10 жыл бұрын
I will take a look at it, I have never removed one of these bearings, so I don't honestly know. Off the top of my head, I would say that there isn't a spacer though.
@ChargerMiles007

I had a look at one of the ball bearing cranks from a 5 horse Briggs (I only have a few of them). I couldn't see any type of spacer, I think you just press the bearing onto the crank. I was reading my Briggs manual, it says to heat the bearing to 325 deg. F, in oil, then slip it onto the crank which has been held in a vise. Sounds like a tricky venture, as your pretty much only have one attempt at it! Cooling the crank down first could help also. They say to use an arbor press to remove a worn bearing, and to not re-use a bearing that has been removed.

The only way to increase the timing is to remove the flywheel and install an offset key way 2deg 3deg exc.But this will not work if your still running point`s
@thomasrice2888

You timed it just like the manual says! And that bearing is a press fit, if it slides off there’s a problem!
@ChargerMiles007
@ChargerMiles007 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the bearing is normally heated (in oil) before installation, resulting in a press fit. True, if it slips off it is too loose.

I have a machined hole in my crankshaft. Is that the same because there is a slight little dot in the crankshaft as well. Really confusing these roller bearing motors not anything like the old school😢
@ChargerMiles007
@ChargerMiles007 5 ай бұрын
I haven't heard of a hole in the crankshaft, normally it would be a dot or line on the crank timing gear. You may have to resort to trial and error, line it up how you think it is supposed to go, put the cover back on, and check the valve timing versus the piston. You just gave me an idea for a vid, where I show when the valves are supposed to start to open relative to the piston position. Another point, when the piston is at the top during the valve overlap period, the intake should be opening, and the exhaust valve closing, so if this isn't happening then, you probably have the gears timed incorrectly.

@@ChargerMiles007 Yah make a vid on this. I think ive got it correct as thats what I did. Its about 1/4 before TDC and the valves do this. The machined hole lines up with the other mark. I havent tried starting it yet. Have other issues.

you may have to carefully cut the bearing off with a grinder and zip disc. Another way might be to cut the outer ring off, then heat the inner ring with a torch (but not too much so it is glowing), then pry it off the shaft. i do know that you heat the new bearing up in oil to say 350 F then slide it on the shaft quickly before it cools down. You must heat the bearing in oil though, never use a torch!!!

The bearing is easily removed with a puller. Use strip 180 sandpaper to remove just enough material from the crankshaft to allow the bearing to slide on and off by hand.

I have an engine exactly like this. The camshaft is rusty and the lifter are gone the carb is dirty and the piston rings fell apart after I pulled the piston out. The cam shaft wont fit anymore. Some moron took it apart to work on it and left it sitting on a bench in an open garage for a long time. Hopefully after some classes I can put her back together or do some interesting mods.

+David Vermillion Try holding the camshaft in a vise with soft jaws, and using emery cloth on it, or a 2" wide strip of sandpaper folded twice to make it about an inch wide. I generally use 320 or 400 grit. it seems to remove rust pretty well.
