PUBLIC NOTICE: We are starting to see stretched and whining chains yet again on 2014+ QX80s and QX56s that got the update timing chains. We are only seeing it on vehicles with poor oil change history. DO YOUR OIL CHANGES. It is extremely vital on a high stress engine like the VK56 direct injected. If you want to go the extra step, go back to the old 3750 maintenance schedule. Doing your oil changes on time will make all the difference in what kind of life you get out of that engine. A timing chain job once out of warranty is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.

@Galen. Great video. It really showed me the amount of work going into my "new to me" 2013 Q56. if you don't mind, do you mind if I ask a question regarding this recall? Long story short, I am paying out of pocket to have this done and didn't know about the recall but the issues described sound like what was diagnosed and is being fixed in my own vehicle. Is there any way to check yourself to see if your vehicle is part of the recall? Also, are there any vehicles within that model year range (2011 - 2013) that do not have this issue? Why or why not? Thanks again for the solid content

@Galen. Hey Galen I had a quick question. I own a 2011 QX56 that I purchased from the Infiniti dealer in the Spring of 2016. I just had a diag from the same dealer that timing chains need to be replaced. If they had the vehicle in 16 and sold it while the recall was alive, shouldn’t they have been responsible taking care of the recall while the truck was in their possession?
@haloguru25522 жыл бұрын
You'd need to look at the exact dates because the recall was active from spring 2016 to spring 2017. I believe it was just one year. If it was with in that time frame, yeah, that would have been the decent thing to do. At least my dealership would have. I don't know that it's required and I don't know about the legal ramifications though, because it's not a safety recall. Something you would probably have to take up with them. I don't that there's anything you can do about it now. You should have gotten a letter in the mail or something though.

Great video! Would a 2023 QX80 need its timing chain replaced? I see it was not affected by the recall but is it still a wear and tear item? For example Honda V6 the timing belt is recommended every 7 years or 100,000 miles, is it similar with this?
@haloguru25527 ай бұрын
There's no maintenance interval. It's only if it starts making noise or fails do you replace it. Change your oil every 5k on time, use synthetic. Should be fine. I would replace the high pressure fuel pump lifter bucket at 100k miles though, as a preventative repair. We see issues with them in high mileage and that becomes a very expensive repair.

Awesome video. I’ve been watching it a lot lately. I’m in the middle of doing the job myself. It’s very hard work!!! Can I ask which way should the crank bolt be loosened? Then I’ve also still got the sump to pry off. I assume just some big screwdrivers?
@haloguru25522 жыл бұрын
It gets loosened the normal way, lefty loosy. It's on there extremely tight though. We have a special tool that holds the crankshaft to break it loose. I have to use a 3/4" breaker bar to get it loose, it's that tight. But recently I got a honda crank bolt remover socket. Special tool for removing tight crank bolts with just an impact. Just search it. I think Amazon has them now. It's a big thick socket about the size of an axle nut socket. There is a special puller tool you saw me use in the video. You can also pry it off but must be very careful or you will break the timing cover! You need a long thick pry bar. There are two long 10mm timing cover bolts directly over the pulley. Pry from the top, and fulcrum the pry bar off of the bolt on the driver's side. It requires a lot of force to pry off and you have to work it a mm at a time. Do NOT fulcrum the pry bar on the timing cover itself. You will break it. Ask me how I know.

Hello, I am also in the DFW area. I have a 2012 Qx56 with 132K miles now, 100K when I got it. I am not sure if the timing chain recall was performed by original owner. I tried asking the dealership with my VIN and they said there was no information available. I took my High pressure fuel pump off and the lifter valve was broken at the bottom. I was able to prevent the pencil eraser sized center piece of the lifter valve from falling into the cam, because it was visible once I took the pump out. The other metal fragments would have fallen into the cam whenever the lifter valve started breaking, who knows how long ago. I started to have poor performance and fault codes P0087 and P0090, so that is why I decided to check the lifter valve. I just got the new lifter valve installed myself and everything put back together. If I wanted to have the timing chain and oil jet done by you would you be available and cost?

Just whatever our bulk brake cleaner is. They mix up the formula a lot. In my shop at home I use O'Reillys brand brake cleaner in an aerosol can, and acetone in spray bottles.
@haloguru25522 жыл бұрын
Any kind of non-residue leaving solvent will work. For instance, naptha and kerosene leave an oily residue. Brake cleaner, alcohol, and acetone do not. Before you apply the rtv silicone to the timing cover to reinstall it, you want the sealing surfaces SURGICALLY clean. Spray clean all the oil and shit from cleaning the parts off. Blow out all bolt holes with compressed air. Then take a clean white rag or shop paper towels soaked with solvent and wipe both surfaces twice before applying the rtv. Before you slap the cover on, check the block surface again, make sure no residual oil ran down. This has been my process since always and I've never had one come back leaking.

Found out HPFP wasn't working because lifter was stuck in its bore and developed a hole at the bottom. Drive came is shot too. So if the T-chain recall was done on this one is it necessary to do it again? Is it necessary to also change the intake phasers and oil pump? Also the amount of intake valve carbon is insane on this engine. Thanks
@haloguru25524 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn't see this sooner. If the chains are the new design and are still good, you don't need to. If it's the old chain design, replace them. No need to replace the oil pump. I've been seeing you're issue a lot more recently. Not sure exactly what causes. Maybe lack of lubrication from long oil change intervals. Usually it requires pulling the timing cover but if you can get the lifter bucket out, you may be able to emerey cloth the hpfp drive cam, stick a new lifter in, and roll it .
@haloguru25524 жыл бұрын
And by intake phaser I assume you mean the variable intake cam sprocket? Not necessary to change it. On another note of my suggestion to emerey cloth and roll it, that's for light scratching. If it's shot, then you'll have to replace it.

You can probably buy the tool through them or possibly borrow it with a deposit, if they're willing. But I'm sure there's a tool out there available that's been copied from the nissan tool. Looks like you did it exactly how the other guy in my shop does them and he's around 7.5 hours. You can try pulling the front clip, I like doing it that way better. More than that I think it's just about finding a method that works for you and just hammering down on them to get faster and faster.

Hey mate, I have a vk45 that either needs chains or the exhaust cam (the bank with the sensor hole above the ac pump) looks to be advanced a tooth or so which is odd, considering if the chains are worn normally you get retarded timing. I wonder if some turkey turned the engine back and skipped that cam or if it's skipped on its own, either way I guess the right way is to do everything
@haloguru25522 жыл бұрын
I've seen them jump advanced on the VQ engines. VK45 is a bit different from the VK56 though. Which vehicle do you have? If you're going in that far to do anything, I wouldn't skip doing the chains. Unless you a broken camshaft, I don't see how the cam would be bad.

@@haloguru2552 Cheers for replying, sorry for the novel - it's a 2009 F50 Cima with 175,000km. I dug deep into it lacking power on hills, knocking and found the spark timing to be pegged advanced at 30 with a timing light and idling high even though it completes the relearn just fine. If you reset the ecu, initially the IVIS sensors read 4/4.5 degrees retarded until you rev it and they zero out. With the crank at tdc I can barely see one of the three notches on the exhaust cam pickup through the hole in the timing cover and it has an ever so slight miss just off idle on that bank. I had a vq30 maxima before this one and the spark timing was 8 degrees with a really worn chain and still ran pretty good. I based my idea that the vk45 sets base timing primarily off that sensor and maybe its jumped

Any insight on what exactly causes the failure? I know it mentions replacing the "oil Jet" with a revised part. But what exactly happens to the old oil jet. Does it become restricted over time or does it simply not supply enough lubrication causing the chains to wear out prematurely over time. I have a 2012 QX80 (QX56) whining like crazy with serpentine belt off. Thank you for the info.
@haloguru25525 жыл бұрын
The actual failure is the chains themselves. They're were too thin and weak to handle the added stress of the high pressure fuel pump when they redesigned the engine from the old iteration. So the chain stretches due to weakness of design and then rubs on the oil jet causing the whine noise. The new chains are stronger and I believe the oil jet is the same. The primary failure is the chains, not the oil jet.

Also, sounds like your QX56 needs timing chains.

also is there a difference between the 5.6 engine timing chain replacment on the qx56, armada and titans?
@haloguru25528 жыл бұрын
The special jig they're probably talking about are the tools to replace the oil jet and the crankshaft holding tool to remove the harmonic balancer. It depends what year you are talking about. The QX56 2003-2010 has the same engine as the nissan aramada and titan 2003-2015. The QX56 got the direct injected engine in 2011, the armada and titan got the direct injected engine in 2016. The timing chain replacement will be the same for qx56, titan, and armada, with the same engine. Timing chain replacement will not be the same if they do not have the same engine. The recall affects only 2011-2013(and half) QX56s. Mid 2013, the issue was corrected at the factory.

My qx56 2013 had the recall done last year and all of a sudden on a long drive last week it started to rattle when I took my foot off the gas...then wouldn't go over 3000rpm after 2hrs more hours with nothing except the rattle and no check engine lights I lost power and was lucky to get to an off ramp and exit the highway. It lit up like a Christmas tree when I came to stop, and stalled. Tried to turn it back on and it sounded like a tractor and there was a knock!! I had my scan tool with me, and it threw codes 1093, 0340 0345, 0011, and 0021 would this be related to the timing chain repair done last year??? I always change my oil with high quality synthetic. My dealer is saying of course that this has nothing to do with the work they performed on the vehicle.
@haloguru25526 жыл бұрын
I would find it highly unlikely to be related to the chain recall. I've done over 150 of these chain recalls and that seems to me to be completely unrelated. The P1093 code is for the VVEL actuator motor bank 2. Just based on my knowledge of Nissan/Infiniti and not having seen your vehicle at all, I would guess that to be the root cause and the P0340,0345, 0011, 0021 to be secondary codes set due to a VVEL motor malfunction. The VVEL system controls the variable intake valve lift and duration. I would say that code needs to be looked into first. We don't see a lot of VVEL issues on any of our cars, but unfortunately when we do, it's not a simple or cheap repair.
@haloguru25526 жыл бұрын
One more thing to mention. The VVEL system is not touched whatsoever during the chain replacement. Not even the electrical connectors are disconnected. So I would find it highly unlikely to be related to that, especially considering the vehicle ran fine for a year after the repair.

@@haloguru2552 on the original chain there is only one orange link per chain, where do you place them before taking off the chain? Looks like you spun the cam after the chain was off? Worried it was an interference motor New chains have marks for each cam and the fuel, so not sure if Im overthinking it or if I need to keep spinning it until the orange links line up on the crank
@haloguru2552 Жыл бұрын
@@blaing3354 you'll never get the links to line up spinning it over. Spin it until the punched timing marks on the cam sprockets are pointing up on the intake cams and the exhaust cam marks are pointing about 1-2 o'clock on the driver side and about 10-11 o'clock on the passenger side (should be mirror images of each other pointed on both banks), and keyway on the crankshaft is at about 1-2 o'clock. That's roughly top dead center, close enough. Then replace the chains/guides, and line up the marks on the new chains with the marks on the sprockets. The exhaust cams might move when you pull the chains off. Not a big deal, just move them back when lining up the marks, kinda gotta dick with it a little bit.
