Pretty nice of you to remove your own bumper just to show us the proper way to do it. Your other video was a great help when I replaced all my belts on my 3rd Gen 4Runner. Hey Tim. I have been watching your videos for the past couple years and have learned so much from you and Sean. I just want to say thank you for everything you guys do. I am a little introverted by nature and I have never commented on any KZbin video until about 5 minutes ago where I left a comment for another DIY mechanic. I don't have any other social media accounts either so I just don't really ever comment on much of anything but it's past time that I thank you guys because you are my go-to for sure! I actually just finished the ARB install on my 97 4Runner SR5 5-speed manual with the 3.4. I also have a 2000 Tacoma 3.4 5-speed extra cab. The amount of work I have done on these myself is all thanks to you guys. I live up in Washington state but my 4Runner was actually a California rig that got shipped up here and I snagged it off a guy who's 16 year old daughter didn't want to learn how to drive a stick LOL. Super clean frame body and interior but mechanically and suspension wise was just a mess . It has been a real Joy seeing it come back to life and the satisfaction of doing it myself. Timmy The Toolman got the bumper installed. It was a booger bear and I have a lot of bolts left over I guess they were for the Tacoma. I was able to grind the end caps of my frame rail flush so I wouldn't have an empty hole. Thanks for this video it really helped out

Hi guys, great video but one small noticeable mistake. When talking about the long vertical bolts (with the sleeve) which run through the frame rails from top to bottom you said to drill the new hole in the bottom of the frame rail the same diameter as the shank of the bolt. The hole should instead be the same diameter as the outside diameter of the sleeve which slides over the bolt. This will allow the sleeve end to sit flush with the outside (bottom) of the frame rail. If the bottom hole is only drilled to the diameter of the bolt the sleeve will sit on the inner (bottom) surface of the frame rail and the top of the sleeve will protrude out of the top of the frame rail by approximately 1/8" - 1/4" when everything is tightened up. The sleeve is there to prevent the frame rail collapsing when the bolt and nut are tightened, the sleeve ends should sit flush with the top and bottom surfaces of the rail. So I just finished up an ARB install on my 2000. As always, Tim your video was super helpful especially since the ARB instructions are a joke. I don't live in Timmy's rust free paradise so bumper removal was not as simple as your video. I think the whole job took about six hours and it looks great. In hindsight, I think if you are real careful you cut the excess off the end caps but actually leave the plate covering the end of the frame rails so it is enclosed and a bit stronger. I didn't do it that way but I think it could be done. Another successful T4R project thanks to Tim.

Yeah, dealing with rust is a bummer and I know how lucky we are to not have to deal with it. As for the plates on the ends of the frame rails, I think you need to remove them for proper fitment of the bumper. But, some people put a plate on the inside of the frame rail ends and then weld them in place for extra reinforcement especially for those that plan on using a winch. The plates reinforce the frame rails but don't stick out to hinder proper fitment of the bumper. Glad our video helped you get the job done. Happy Wrenching!

Just confirming, on this topic of the end cap mod: if you plan to use the bumper for winching, does that front welded plate need to have a frontal threaded hole for attachment, or are the other bolts adequate and covering it is really just for strengthening the integrity of the open frame rail? Correct me if this is wrong, but it looks and sounds from your video as if you are using EITHER the vertical bolt (the one perpendicular to the ground) OR a frontal bolt (parallel to the ground, going in from front), given the limited clearance in there?... There isn’t room on the backside of the front bolt because the bolt going vertical (drilled the hole for) is behind that cap. I just did this mount and I cut bracket so the cap remained and the frame rails remained shut. Should be the strongest compared to opening it up.

Great video. Just did this on my 2000 Tacoma, steps were the same aside from the frame horns, which changed designs frequently on the tacomas(so be weary of what mounting kit you have). I did not have to do any cutting, however on this year design you are not able to use the splash guard or skid plate mount, no frame extensions needed. I was able to get the bumper aligned pretty fast by myself using a bottle jack on top of a floor jack that I used to move the bumper upwards in order to align it how I wanted and get the 6 bolts in. Highly recommend if you are installing the winch at the same time like I did, it makes it much easier because both units weigh 150~lb together.

On my 2000 4Runner I noticed excessive corrosion on the inside portions of the front and back bumpers. Not sure if it was due to manufacturing problem or my climate. Removed both bumpers and rust proofed them. Enjoyed your great work brother Tim!!

I noticed the same thing (rust) on the inside of my stock front bumper. Mine's a California car, so no salt and not much continuous rain at all. I think they skimp on the plating on the inside.

Timmy The Toolman man how cool is that! Funny story, a Yamaha big wheel 200 is the first full size motorcycle I ever rode. Up in West Virginia, rode it all the way down some big hill never got out of first gear hahah. Got to the bottom and fell right over, I was too short to hardly reach the foot pegs. Cool bike! @@TheChapMX That's cool that was the first full-size motorcycle you ever rode. I bought it to do volunteer trail work. It was a way to get out on a remote section of trail rather than walk in. I also use it to ride a trail system with a chain saw cutting out down trees across the trails. I have a cabin share in this old gold mining town called Forest City close to Downieville. There's a 35 miles trail system that I help take of. It's hard labor but I love being out in the woods doing physical work.

35:54, I used a stubby 3/8" drive ratchet with a 17mm and it went smoother. From there, you can use a larger one for final torque.

First of all THANK YOU! i was able to complete my bumper installation following your video, Here are some details I did different that may help someone doing this same install: 1. When trimming the OEM bumper base, I did not cut the welds, but grinded the plate enough for it to stay at the base, providing that extra support for winch operations, keeping it close to weather, and you wont have to weld an additional plate. 2. USE A LIFT to set your arb bumper into the correct height. This way you can be really accurate, and avoid having a buddy standing there trying to keep it at the same height. 3. Use oil when drilling your holes in the bit and in the hole itself, it helps immensely. Thanks again!

Good video Tim. Have a 97 4runner limited. Just finished installing bilstein 5100s w/tundra and ome springs, went through Wheelers. Like you I was looking for a 2" lift to avoid tire rub caused by larger tires. I also bought the same ARB bumper in this video and agree the instructions are sketchy at best. I'll let you know how the install works out.

Hey Gilbert, don't be fooled by the video length. We also struggled to get the bumper to line up. The hardest part was getting the bumper to fit between the two brackets. When we struggle, we cut out a lot of it because it would make the video too long to watch. But, after the struggle, we always share what gave us success so hopefully somebody following our video has an easier time. The pry bar on the brackets to spread them out a little was the trick to finally getting the bumper to fit between the brackets. Happy Wrenching!

Added this elsewhere. But use the 4RNR bottle Jack + a 4x4 post to pry those brisket open wider. Worked really easily. So much so I had to do it twice when I used the wrong bolts & snap-in nuts. Oops…..

I recently installed a Savage Off Road Hybrid (plate and tube) front winch bumper on my 2000 4 Runner. SOR's instructions were to trim those front frame plates just like you did (edit added. I see you did remove the whole plate. Didn't have to do that for the SOR). No question about trying to cut the welds and remove the whole plate. I wouldn't even consider that. BTW, nice job for a first timer on the angle grinder. FWIW, from experience, I recommend full face protection when using the AG. Some even say safety glasses + full face protection + breathing protection. Not a bad idea. The cutting disks are reinforced with fiberglass. That and the grinding stone turn to fine powder that hangs in the air.

It probably needs a ton of work but we don't necessarily need our own rigs to work on. There's lots of people in the 3rd Gen Community in our area to help out with projects and make new videos with. I don't know how many complete strangers rigs we've worked on, but it's quite a few. The cool thing is a decent percentage of these guys are now friends of ours. It's a cool community of Toyota enthusiasts.

Satish Kumar I got mine on eBay. That is probably the best way to find a decent price for an actual hard copy. Sean found a 2002 FSM online so he has a digital copy. I like having a tangible copy I can make notes in.

You have a 2nd Generation Tacoma. This video might give you an idea of how to install a bumper on your 2012 Tacoma but I would suggest you look for a video or write-up that involves installing a bumper on a 2nd Gen Tacoma.

Could just heavily score the metal and the use a adjustable wrench and bend the metal back and forth till it snaps off. If you use a angle grinder a lot it will save some time and disks. Once you get into one weld, you can use a hammer and chisel to put some stress in to the welds and the would start to pop. If not rinse and repeat and it will come off. And since you’re using a cordless it will save on battery charge. Cordless angle grinders are great for small jobs, but won’t last long for big projects.

I only ask because you have another video of a body lift install, and I believe it's on the same truck. I can't imagine any way to compensate and avoid a gap between the bumper and the grill.

Hey Ben, glad you like our videos. You're welcome. You can alter the bumper mounts to accommodate for the body lift. You basically have to drill different holes so the bumper sits higher and tighter to the body.

I guess you could do a little grinding to give you more access but it depends if that will bother you due to how it will look. If you're not super concerned about the looks, I'd probably do a little griding to improve your access to the hood latch.

Great work Timmy. I am contemplating on installing an ARB after my 3rd gen got a parking lot hit and run on the grill guard (crash bar). The problem that I am worried about is the weight of an ARB. I installed a bull bar (Japanese) to a Hilux LN 106 4x4 and soon after that, I cannot pickup from stop on the 2nd gear on a flat paved road. I have to give more throttle or use 1st gear always. After removing the bullbar, I could pickup from a stop with 2nd gear on idle. This is why I am still wondering what to do. We all know 3rd Gen runners (hulix surf or Prado 90 with 5vzfe ) are bad with MPG so with added weight, it is be worst.

Jan pur Adding weight to your rig is going to slow you down and hurt your gas mileage. That's one of the down sides of adding aftermarket bumpers, skids, winch, rock rails, etc. Cool modifications come at a price.

@ethanwarren123 It does add significant front-end protection. You don't need 4wd to benefit from a steel bumper. If you got in a front-end collision or an animal like a deer jumped out in front of your rig, you'd be glad you had this bumper rather than the useless OEM bumper.

I recently hit a deer going 55 with an ARB bumper on the front of my Tacoma. It pushed back approximately 2 to 3 in slightly dented the hood and barely wrinkled the quarter panel. I haven't taken it off yet but my guess is the brackets are bent

This bumper weighs approximately ~150lbs. If you add a winch you're adding another 70-80lbs. This is a good reason to go with 650lb springs for your front coilover struts and not the typical 600lb coils.

hey tim, at 28:16, do you think you need to drill out that hole a bit bigger than 7/16" so the sleeve actually passes through both sides of the frame rail. I think the way you have it now, it only passes through one side (the top) since that hole is larger. Seems like it is supporting the frame/bolt under heavy winching? I might be wrong but i'll check that out when I do mine. Seems like it might be long enough to brace both sides of the frame rail?

If anyone is planning a smitty winch (smitty 9500 steel cable) for this bumper, you can use the bolts that ARB provides but i've found they strip rather easily against the winch square nuts. I ended up using the winch supplied bolts. The only problem is, you can't use the lock washer the winch bolts came with since the bolts are too short! Helps to have a pen style magnet to keep the nuts in place while you line it up with the holes/bolt.

No, you can't for the proper fitment of the bumper. You can weld in a plate inside the end of the frame rails if you want to reinforce the frame.

I would be shaving off the weight of the stock bumper on top of that and I was wondering if Bilstein w/ OME 881 front / 906 rear (2" lift - stock weigh ) would be able to handle it or I should go up for 883 (2.5") front and 890 (2.5") rear?

Without installing a winch, the weight added by the bumper isn’t that much so you’ll be fine with that bilstein setup and the ARB bumper.

You basically want 650 lb rated springs with that bumper. 600 is too soft and 700 is too stiff. The rating is the amount of weight it takes to compress the springs 1 inch. You can pick up the springs or complete coilovers with the Bilstein 5100s already installed from different sellers. You just have to do some online searching.

The bumper will fit fine but you’ll have a gap between the bumper and body. Sean has a 1.5” body lift on his 2002 & to address the hideous gap between the bumper & the body he took off the mounting brackets, cut them, & re-welded them 1.5” higher. It looks perfect now

Kind of late for that. We would have had to take notes during the installation. If you watch the video, you should be able to glean what fasteners we're using and match it up to the fasteners that came with your bumper.

I use them all the time as I work on my 1999 T4R Limited. ?4U... one of the comment replies on AMZ for this bumper indicated "This bumper will also require upgrading your front suspension to handle the weight - 150 lbs+- to maintain decent handling on- or off-road". (1) Did you upgrade your suspension, and (2) if not, have you seen any negative handling/performace with the stock suspension?

Good to hear you're getting good use of our videos. Sean's suspension was already upgraded. The stock springs will sag quite a bit with the extra weight from the bumper. It's better to get springs that match the weight you're carrying.

@@drewross5589 You'd want springs that are rated for 600 lbs. If you plan on adding a winch, get 650 lbs springs. I don't have a recommendation on brand. There's lots to choose from.

It would be best to replace the front springs for a set that has a 650 lb/inch spring rate. This would be ideal. If you kept the OEM springs, the front end is going to sag from the additional weight of the bumper and winch.

The additional weight is going to make the front end sag quite bit. A good thing to do would be to upgrade the front springs to a 650 lb rating. I'm not sure if they even make a replacement spring in the that weight rating for stock height. You might be forced to lift the rig a little. Do some research and see what you find out. I just bought a lift for my 98 rig and with an aftermarket bumper and winch, it was recommended to go with a 650 lb front coil spring. Some people even go with a 700 lb spring but that might be overkill. I can tell you right now my 98 is running very stiff up front with the 650 springs and without the additional weight on the front just yet.

There's some slight differences with the frame ends. I can't remember which years have what. The frame ends have to come off for the ARB crush cans to be able to slide over the frame rails.

It might be an issue. Not all bumpers attach the same way. This is one of the things you have to consider when doing modifications... in other words, you will have to weld back on the front plates if you want to attach your stock bumper back to your rig.

Tim, I have a 5th gen 4Runner (‘23 actually). When installing a bigger front suspension, the sway bar had to be moved forward. The nut that was welded inside the frame started free spinning. Found out it happens. So what’s your advice on solving this? I prefer a minimalist solution, no welding, no cutting frame parts. Can a rivet nut work?

Hello Tim, I'm getting ready to purchase the ARB bumper for my 3rd gen 4R. I noticed that Sean has the #3423020. Did you have the same model? I'm aware that there is also a #3423040. I believe the 40 is the Integrit black textured finish and the 20 is a satin black finish. Im not sure which one to purchase, because I have never seen the 40 textured finish. We never knew of another option for paint on these. Texted sounds cool in theory, but the one benefit of the regular powder-coated version I got (3423020) is that if you care about aesthetics, once the power-coat begins to fade a bit from the sun, you can hit it with some polish and bring it back to life a bit. I can image the texted version is a bit like rhino liner or line-x. With that said, I bet it will look great at first, but if they don’t put good quality texted paint on there, it will look bunk once it starts to fade and you will have no recourse to attempt to restore the finish. Just my thoughts on the topic, plus I’ve never actually seen the texted option in person. - Sean
