Apart from your home country, you have options to retire in all sorts of countries these days. All have positives and negatives, including Thailand. Has Thailand lost its gloss as a retirement option for westerners? Are the tax controversies, 90 day reporting and perceived visa complications putting people off? Or, even worse, causing them to leave Thailand for somewhere else? Join in and tell us your thoughts.

I think that Costa Rica is listed as number one because the list is for an American readership. I lived in Costa Rica for 13 years. It was great at that time. Prices were low. Real Estate was a bargain. Retirement Visas were easy to get. So many expats have moved there that property prices are very high. Food prices are comparable to the US. The traffic in San Jose is so bad that the last number of your license plate must match the last number of the date to drive your car into the city. But it is less than a 3 hour flight from Miami. English is spoken even in rural areas.

Thailand is on many other best places to retire lists. It's been on International Living's lists before. The biggest weakness of Thailand is retirement status has no path to permanent residence. Compare to Mexico where with the right finances you can get lifetime residence before you even arrive! Rules change in Thailand and people are always in fear of being pushed out.

@@ScooterOnHisWay2024 That's not fair, Expats generally don't move to the more dangerous places. There are places in Mexico that are considerably safer than a typical U.S. city. That's relevant because most of the expats in Mexico are from the U.S. and Canada.

@@JustToSay442 Not fair. Aside from the beaches the most popular expat destinations in Mexico are in the inland colonial cities which enjoy year long moderate temperatures -- not too hot or cold. There is a serious problem now in Mexico city with draught (water supply).

Learning to play a musical instrument an alto Sax has been my retirement project (hubby too but he went for a Tenor) and now I also play Baritone Sax. We’ve made new friends and daily practice and weekly lessons and Band practice is fun and gives you structure. My concern is bringing our instruments to Thailand and opportunities to play with others.

A little misinformation in this video regarding the Aussie pension. It is portable overseas if you have been resident in Australia for two years prior, though you do lose some of the supplements. Obviously means testing comes into play. All the information is on the government website.

Yes. It’s not the first time I’ve ventured into this can of worms. It’s not easy to port the pension and certainly impossible unless you’re willing to live in the country for 2 years prior to your application. For me that’s impossible from a business and relationship POV

For white people who have good experiences. Not selfish. Not racist. Respect the law. Respect the culture. Love Thai people, not oppress. Most Thai people welcome everyone. And ready to be friendly. And we Thai people respect the elderly. And love the elderly who are wise and mature. Not selfish. I love you all. Especially the elderly. I would like the Thai government to understand and enact fair laws and screen European and American senior citizens to be given convenience in renting or buying houses and condos fairly and without taking advantage based on humanitarian principles and basic public welfare such as senior citizens who should receive it if they pay taxes and have health insurance and a visa that is not complicated. Some should be drafted by a group and presented to the Thai government to help fix it. It will be beneficial to all of you and both parties will benefit.

Only the Australian aged pension supplement (AAP), about $80 is deducted after 6 week of absence from Aus. Provided you are subject to the assets and income test. You will get a pension with full portability after living in Australia for 2 years before or after you apply for the AAP. Presently you can have an asset of near $600,000 and reduce by 50 cents in the dollar to about $900,000 assets where your AAP will stop. For most people who do not have an AAP and are over 67 Y/O their assets are over the assets threshold level (no exceptions).

Maybe someone can give me advice. I'm a 67 year old Australian woman. I'm eligible for age pension now . I went back to Australia last year but due to housing shortage, I've ended up back in Cambodia living on borrowed money less than half the monthly pension. Australian government will not give me the pension unless I go back to Australia for 2 years because they don't have an agreement with SE Asian countries. I'm desperate they acknowledge I'll be homeless if I go back.

Ditto Dave Walden I'm 82 y/o. So I now just go on Tourist visas often. I get the Australian Aged Pension with some super I'm under the threshold and I live like a King in Thailand. Other times I live in W.A. I am still able to walk 6km around the block each day and have done so for 47 years every day. Modest walking I believe helps a lot and health is OK to good. I have had a Thai retirement visa obtained in Canberra Aus. As I own a house frequent trips are OK.

I had a health insurance policy here for many years. When I turned 65 years old, they didn't cancel me BUT, the premiums priced me out. Insurance companies do not want to insure old people. That said, I feel that they are cheating people who have had those policies for many years. There is no loyalty. I had one claim in all those years. It was for appendicitis. They did pay for the entire operation except for a soft drink that my wife had. I felt that was quite petty. No doubt the insurance company spent much more money collecting for that soft drink than it cost..

What happen to the western society like US, Canada, Australia, UK, by the time people reach the age of 50, friendship no longer exist. They be lucky to a have a few friends left to come for a visit. People try to hide the issue and avoid the truth by saying busy lifestyle, family and so on. In reality, People been taught to take other people for ride or take advantage of their friends, so they all go separate way for goods. What do you think 2 Team ? you can see why foreigners run away from Vietnam.

Tim 2, I think Australians on the aged pension can spend 6 months/year overseas? There are probably some rules around that. I am on the disability pension and I can only spend 28 days overseas before the pension is cut. I can spend up to 3 months overseas before I need to actually reapply for the disability pension. But payment lasts just 28 days. Once I reach aged pension age (67), then I believe 6 months/year overseas is available

Great show Tims 1 and 2 - really enjoyed that as an Aussie and I can still hear that famous voice saying 'wait ....' . Great advice about how and when to retire here - so many think it will be like being on holiday all the time - it aint like that at all. Thailand is no longer on the list of best countries to retire IMO, because of the negative Visa changes since the Junta took over and other things like the recent taxation issue. Plus the fact that 'competing' countries have made their country far more attractive (at a reasonable price). Regarding the Aust Pension - you can take it with you overseas once you have it (portability), but you cannot apply from overseas like other countries can. If you go back to apply, then you have to wait 2 years before leaving again, in order to get portability approved. Also Tim2 was correct - back in 2001 the Howard Govt Dept of FACS did a Cost Benefit Study on the portability of the Pension. Much to their surprise the net benefit to Australia was way ahead for those who went to live overseas (mainly due to the medical costs), and that included the percentage who returned when they are 80+ as some do (but most dont). They did the study to provide ammunition to reduce or cancel the overseas Pensions, but the result was they would actually lose out in the Budget and that is why it was not changed - most people do not know that - I lived in Canberra at the time (and retiring there was not an option).

If you have worked in Australia for at least 35 years you shouldn't have to stay 2 years upon reaching 67. A friend who had lived in Thailand for 3 years before reaching 67, returned to Oz for 1 month where he applied for the age pension. He was at first told he had to stay for 2 years. Until he dug deeper and found the 35 years working loophole. He then returned to Thailand with the unrestricted age pension. He said it seemed some social security officers weren't completely aware of all the requirements. They probably deal with so many people wanting to take it overseas without having lived there that long, they generally have to tell them to stay 2 years to qualify.

Central America sounds quite a bit unstable for me. It might seem okay until one day it's not, like wjat happened in Ecuador one morning. Asian societies are generally more cohesive and cooperative. Less crime and political instability. Crisis tends to contained within national borders and doesn't so easily spill over. If something is going on in a neighboring country you still have time to plan your response. I have lived in Singapore for several years, been to Malaysia. Stayed long term in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Stayed midterm in Thailand and Japan. Based on all this, splitting time 180/180 between Japan and Thailand seems optimal, seasons, culture and health-wise. It does take some language aptitude, Japan in particular.

Hang on! The viewer saying you get an Australian pension, well spend it in Australia!! Okay, but why are people getting a pension? Because they've earned it, or they can't work! Furthermore, what drain on Australian society are these pensioners, if they're living overseas?
@krisgen29
@krisgen29 2 ай бұрын
Furthermore, people who go overseas have to buy air tickets when they go and return, which helps the Australian economy. Some people will probably still be contributing to the Australian economy, even if they live overseas. That's because they may have assets in Australia that they need to pay taxes on (think financial investments, property investments, etc); all sorts of fees/charges, including travel charges; sending money back to Australia to family members for various reasons, etc. Again, these overseas Australians are not putting anywhere near as much drain on other tax payers, because they're simply not living in Australia. the ease of chatting to people and making friends out there in SE Asia is so much easier than I find even in my own country now... living there full time? we shall see... but for a good few months a year is 100% on the cards.. at least for a yr to properly experience Thailand... having a constant source of income is definitely a wise move before moving to another country... I am headed over there later this yr but am keeping my home back home to come back to if its not for me... stability does most certainly become a concern as we get older...Thailand does offer more stability than some other countries in that region!

@@btfofffice "The body corporate management" ? WTF 😂😂😂 If you think there's "a lot" of unclaimed property around, particularly in Pattaya and Bangkok with property prices there and given the Thai laws on adverse possession / squatters' rights, I think you're in la-la land, but up to you.

I’ve been to all those countries you mentioned on that IL list, it’s obviously aimed at Americans. Costa Rica is expensive the capital San Jose is nothing special, I liked Jaco, lots of American expats live there, but mostly gated communities, no atmosphere, just a few bars along an average beach!

Probably best if you access the Thai Embassy in India. I have seen info pertinent to Indians on the internet and recall that there are some variations from Australia so I would recommend that you start there.
