The best show yet! Great to hear insights into relationships, getting older, comparative humours, and the Thai film industry. Brilliant example of the intercultural learning that you have accumulated and are happy to share. Doesn’t need to have everyone agree but definitely worth listening too!!! Thank you Tim and Steve!!!

Steve's points on reason to the extended family system in Asia and Thai humor is spot on. As for British and American humor, British humor for me anytime. US humor is boring. Humor with sarcasms is what I enjoy most. Mind you I am from Sri Lanka (Asia).

I thoroughly enjoy the dynamic between you two guys. Comedy is in my opinion not only about the joke but the timing and Tim you are great with yours. You remind me somewhat of Australian comic duo Hamish and Andy, of whose work Tim will know. I think also that the filming of the proposed road trip through Vietnam could end up like a twisted version of Jack Whitehalls "Travels with My Father".

Tim - I originally subscribed to your channel strictly for the news; however, I have found a gem in yours and Steve's "Grumpy Old Men" piece - too funny and entertaining - I was hooked after viewing the "maid" story. I am now going back and watching the previous posts. It reminds me of a lighter version of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (minus the booze - which will assuredly help the continuation - lol). Love the rapport gentlemen!

My own opinion on Q1 is that if you are basing your Thai / Western friendship on Western expectations you will be disappointed. I think if you can modify your expectations with some understanding of Thai expectations that a friendship is possible, so long as both parties actively want the friendship. My limited observation is that when you go to a foreign land and expect things to be the same as the place you left, whatever you are trying to do is doomed to failure.
@fhorst02
@fhorst02 Жыл бұрын
Yes, sadly not everyone takes the time to learn about the culture of the land they are moving to. And be honest.. Most friendships in the west are "transactional" also. As soon as one party stops wanting actively to have the friendship... It dies. When it comes down to it... They didn't get wat they wanted out if the friendship.. Transactional. Thais are just more open about it. And more abrupt When a friendship stops having benefits, they soldom look back and contact "he how are you doing".. One day best friends, next day strangers. Without hard feelings. Just the way it goes.

I laughed out loud several times this week and I have so many things that I want to comment on that its all a big jumble falling over each other 😂. Okay, here's one, thai humour is very visual and simplistic and my wife has learnt the sarcastic humour a little and loves to do the ' empty plate-no sorry I just couldn't eat it ' joke with staff in the UK 😊.

My favorite Grumpy Old Men video so far. I also worked in film years ago in the SFBay area of California. I was a grip, PA, Cam assistant, 1st & 2nd assistant director, and a co-director. But made no money. All films were indie films. Only made money on an Oakland rapper video which was a lot of fun.

Another interesting chin wag.. I first went to Phuket in the early 90s.. so different than nowadays..it was a lovely place.. I can remember that the only ATM was on patong..only time I visited that place..kata and naiharn were idyllic. As for humour..my wife and I, who is Thai do struggle sometimes with the sarcasm.. I'm from the UK and lived in Australia for 20 years.. but, we're getting there... hopefully.

As much as I hate to say it, having worked in Thailand for 3 years (and Vietnam for 3),I think Steve is right. All relationships are transactional and as soon as something changes in your circumstances (Eg job change) suddenly those people won't as much as give you the time of day. Likewise the farang-farang friendships indeed. Just as transactional if not more so as its hard to make a living out here. Most of the time expats here are a group of misfits with no similar backgrounds or interests, save for being expats. Truly hard to make meaningful friendships with both groups
@martypoll
@martypoll Жыл бұрын
I would take transactional relationships further and claim that that is how relationships work in our western home countries as well. Westerners just refuse to see it that way. Asians openly accept transactions as ways to bond and earn trust. I’ve also made good western friends here precisely because we share the expat experience. Having a common experience is a good way to launch a friendship. As a bonus, we tend to not care about or address the divisive issues in our home countries. I’ve met friends here I would never have crossed paths with otherwise.
@MrUled
@MrUled Жыл бұрын
@@martypoll it's true that it can indeed go both ways. As for back home, I have plenty of friends who have nothing to gain or transact with me on. Those are the friendships I refer to. Of course there are always acquaintances, work friends that would more easily fall into the transactional bucket. The former though I have personally rarely encountered in Asia, but ymmv

Two things. (1) The XX200 device purchased from a British company that was an empty black box had a unique marketing policy. My numbers may be off but you can get the drift. Cost to buy was 1000 monetary units and company agreed to rebate purchaser 600 units so every corrupt official was glad to sign purchase order. A USN entity had tested the product soon after it entered market and confirmed it's lack of ability to doing anything. (2) The lease you are trying to obtain signatures from multiple family members for your new project has potential for pitfalls. Five years ago a well heeled individual had money to buy and construct a grass strip airfield in Chalong. Same thing with too many people needed to be paid. Never got off the ground. You may want to obtain services of Thai national to negotiate but I will be surprised you can convince an elderly Thai to sign off even if you agree not to sell booze in your restaurant/cafe/nightclub.

@@mythai05 Well, they would have to do a little more than just tack on a credit. I mean, they could have done that as soon as they found out their mistake. What they needed to do was ask permission from Wyndham's estate to use the story, and likely the rights to "Cuckoos" were already owned by some studio. It would have cost them more to own the story than they spent on making the movie. They had painted themselves into a real corner.

Great discussion on the difference of “Thai humor” and “Western humor. Yes, comedy in Thai movies would offend too many Westerners- jokes about obese & handicap people; sex innuendoes about dildos, “humping in bed…& many juvenile jokes & don’t forget those sound effects. Once I was watching a stage performance in BKK and the stage lip sync singer fell off the stage. All the Thais in the audience burst out laughing while the “farangs” gasped in horror concerned if she was alright. Note: I think American humor back in the 60’s has changed through the decades and now I do not find the TV comedies worth laughing at.

Tim, your playful little physical reactions to Steve's statements are hilarious! I would send you a donation but I don't think you need one! Interesting that you find "farang" a little bit offensive. Similarly, I flinch a bit at Brazilians' use of the word "gringo."

Hi guys . Thanks again for the show , you are perfect together . As farang in Thailand you will be always welcome if you take care of everyone in a Thai family , if you don't there call farang KINIAU or farang ding- dong . This is Thailand and this happens to many expat I particularly in the province . Take care always and be safe there .

What Steve was saying about the need for many people growing rice is a good one . Ive noticed here that one hand helps the other with people in their modes of employment ( usually under less than ideal conditions ) without strikes and stop work meetings .

For me "Grumpy old men" is the best of TNT. Reminds me of "Statler and Waldorf" in Muppet Show

Great show and hope many more to come! 31:50 ... nice to hear that you don't like horror movies. Never understood the need of them. Are they for people with a lot of fears or death fascinated? There is enough horror on the planet when we look Ukraine, Putin, Myanmar, Iugures, Yemen, Sudan or Mali. Lets hope Taiwan remains free

The one and only time I ever went bungee jumping, I asked the instructor, "Why do people like this." He said, "It's like roller coasters, we like to do something that feels dangerous but we know it's safe."

Thanks, Jack. I was an Art major for a year, an American Literature major for a year, and a Theatre major for two years. I ended up with a BA in Theatre Arts. No Philosophy; that stuff goes right over my head.
