Hi Clint, long time viewer, first time commenter. I had a Timor monitor for 8 years. Paid $65 for a sub adult of "unknown origins" (read: definitely imported). I just wanted to mention that with regular work, mine became a sweetheart to handle. I would walk around the house with her perched on my shoulder, she was about as calm as a leopard gecko. Also wanted to say she loved the occasional minnow I would drop in her water bowl. Really awesome lizard that I'll never have again because now I have a tegu. 😊

Oh the ackie is without a doubt THE best pet monitor. Reasonable size, even the skittish babies often will tame down, hardy, great personality, and gorgeous. The only real draw back is the need alot of substrate and some height, so their enclosure is bigger than a lizard their size would suggest. Timors are awesome monitors but I would say some of the other australian dwarf might be better, although if you get a friendly CBB timor, hard to think of a better pet monitor.

Hi Clint, I have a personal fascination with the smaller monitors, known as Odatria. Varanus timorensis is classified as one of these genus & is known from the islands around Timor. A very similar species is the Peacock monitor, Varanus auffenbergi which I believe is only found on one particular island (Roti) near Timor [Mark Auliya and André Koch Visual Identification Guide to the Monitor Lizard Species of the World (Genus Varanus)]. As such there are subtle differences which separate these species & I for one have a personal preference for the latter. Why, is a reasonable question & simply it is because of the blue in their pattern. I feel this is an exquisite feature & sets them apart from an average V timorensis, plus it affords them their common name of Peacock. Did your video release prior to the distinction of these as separate species or do you take the view that they are colour forms of the same species? You mention the colour in your video, but make no mention of the different island localities, which is for my point, what's misleading when you continue to call your specimen a Timor monitor. Otherwise I enjoy your content & would myself love to maintain (possibly breed) a pair or trio of V auffenbergi in the future, because of their smaller stature thus making their care less problematic. I keep large constrictors & understand the difficulties maintaining large reptiles, so would never promote an average keeper towards anything larger than V jobiensis for example unless they have the facility & many years of experience to deal with the trials of such impressive creatures. None the less I appreciated this episode for the detailed videography of a V auffenbergi (imo) as one of my aspirational animals.

I like your videos. You are a true animal lover. I disagree with your low rating of monitors. They suck as a first pet to someone who doesn't do research since they have alot of needs. But if you do your homework, prepare a nice big enclosure, stick to a healthy monitor diet, practice proper socialization, I give monitors a 5 out of 5. Monitors are a life style. Good monitor owners don't have a social life since all of their time and money goes into keeping their monitor happy and healthy.

could you make a video on tree monitors. I've been interested in them for sometime now because their, to me at least the perfect monitor ( big enough to be impressive, small enough to handle and easy enough to care for, more or less), though any similarly sized monitor would be interesting too. I've been researching them too but, in the UK at least, can't find any that are available still it's more of a dream for the future when I can actually afford them.

Hey Clint, I was wondering what would be the best option to provide heat for large snakes? Heat pads work for smaller snakes but I am about to purchase an 8ft Red Tail Boa and I know there are not heat pads that large. Is it okay to use heat lamps? Because that would make it much easier.
