In all my travels I have never seen such an interesting system of old trams battling all kinds of vehicles, pedestrians, markets and trash for space. I applaud Alexandria for maintaining its tram network but some improvements are desired.

We're pretty proud of our tram system, mostly for cultural reasons, but as is evident in the video the whole infrastructure is rather worn down and poorly maintained. Unfortunately it seems parts of the tram line will be replaced by a metro system sometime in the next decade, which might fix a lot of the issues the trams faced but at the cost of a unique part of our culture in Alexandria. Worth noting that farther from El Raml station the tram lines are given more dedicated space as opposed to being part of the street, so they don't have to contend with traffic as much and are a much more pleasant mode of transportation.

Did you know that some of these trams, are former Copenhagen and Düsseldorf trams? These trams were common to see during the later years of Line 5 in Copenhagen (The last original tramline in Denmark)

They look like American-style (but narrower) PCCs with the rears replaced by European-style trailer segments. Also looks like it would be an incredible pain to get the pole back on the wire if it came off.

Amazing! I know Toronto PCCs were used there from the late 60s to the 80s at least. There are some cool photos online of our old Red Rockets repainted in Alexandria's livery with Arabic destination signs etc.

Impressing, they're still running, but sad to see they are not being held in anyway else. I know, fifty years has gone, since we had the last ride in these trams i Copenhagen, but obvious, it was fine, german quality, made to last. Fine video. Thanks for sharing !

Insane indeed! 2:08 to 2:42 - The newer tram and the more "orderly" street scene are quite the contrast to the other clips in this video. What are the buses like?

Yeah, they were built by Düwag in West Germany. Officially known as the GT6, these trams and their derivatives were really common across Western Europe, and quite a few still operate to this day, including in Norrköping in Sweden, Oslo in Norway, Krakow in Poland, and a few other cities. The ones in Alexandria originated from Copenhagen, Denmark, which ordered 100 that were delivered between 1960 and 1968. However by the time the last tram was delivered, the political decission to close the city's entire tram network had already been taken, so they sold these at the time almost brand new trams way below market value to Egypt as a third world aid measure, and they all 100 trams got shipped to Alexandria. 2 Have since been repatriated and are being renovated at the Danish tramway museum, but all the others have stayed down in Alexandria and fallen into quite the decay. Heck you can still see old Danish signage inside of many of them. If you want to see the work being done on one of the 2 repatriated trams, search for "KS 890" on KZbin and the top video should be one from earlier this year, showing the restoration work so far on it, on the day of the 50 year anniversary of the Copenhagen tramways last line closing and being replaced by buses.

@@scottyerkes1867 Back then it was seen as more economical and easier to expand service with. Plus back then most of the political priorities were on cars rather than transit, which were often an afterthought. I mean the closure of the tram system was enacted by Urban Hansen, one of Copenhagens past mayors. That very same guy also put forward several insane highway plans, which thankfully didn't make it into reality for the most part, apart from a few blocks being demolished to make way for something that never came. Mikael Colville Andersen has a good video about these ridiculous highway plans if you're curious, he's a professional urban planner living in Copenhagen, who has also produced his own documentary series about it called "The Life sized city".

Looking at the trucks- pure PCC! And if memory serves,Alexandria had ex-Toronto,and Washington(?),PCC'S,so using Tatra,or the German equivalent isn't too far off the mark,as the shipment would be extremely familiar with the motors, and running gear!! 🤔 (Correction-Shipment should read as SHOPMEN)Spellchecker, dumb!! Well there is but its in Danish, since all of them came from Copenhagen, and were sent down there for dirt cheap as third world aid. By the time Copenhagen had the last of its 100 new Düwag trams delivered, the politicians of the day had already decided to close the whole tram network. In fact this year is the 50 year anniversary of the last tram running in the city. Nowadays trams are returning though... kinda. A new light rail line is being built out in the suburbs as a circumferential corridor to provide easier access by transit across the city's suburbs rather than needing to go through the downtown on the commuter trains. Still we could really use some trams again, and one project has been proposed and is being researched, actually on the very same allignment that the last line ran on. But it has not gone smoothly, with politicians from 2 different major right wing parties both comparing tram tracks to the Berlin Wall. Combine that with a general opposition to trams here in Denmark and such projects might be in trouble despite of how good they are.

Egypt was strongly present in this field, as it started operating the Alexandria tram in 1863 AD and you were working in electricity in 1902 AD, and it spreads in the Alexandria tram network, two main lines are the Raml line called the blue tram and the city center line and the icon of letters in the branch lines such as the line West of the city called the yellow tram, the government e-mail the continuous development of the city's tram network.
