The Cartel really don't understand their profession, chocolate ( be it dark, milk or white ) has it's own flavor and to mix it correctly with any of the three flavors they mentioned takes skill and years of trial and error. Yet this man successfully mixed all three with such precision that they don't over power either each other or the chocolate. I won't argue that Slugworth wasn't wrong. Sometimes a simple chocolate is good, but having different flavors and maybe a surprise or two is more fun.

No, they understand the business of candy making. It’s that they have a virtual monopoly on chocolate in the area the film takes place in, using their control, wealth, and status to run their business like a corrupt fiefdom. There’s nothing wrong with a simple chocolate. But Wonka doesn’t just specialize in simple chocolate. He literally sees it as an art medium, where unfiltered imagination can be made manifest with the right know-how and the proper ingredients. That’s why in the book and the films, people like the Cartel’s companies try to steal his recipes to get an edge over a man who’s making candy that defies the laws of biology and physics as casually as a duck swims on a pond.

@SpaceCase132 Okay, point taken, and I agree. But, I think they were being professionally unfair. The only reason they said Hover Choc was weird was because they saw it flying and saw it as , and I quote, " Bells and Whistles." If he had just offered them a simple chocolate that successfully balanced through flavors of marshmallows, caramel, and cherry. Then they wouldn't have said anything bad about him.

How many films of the 20th century have been so widely regarded as to have been remade TWICE? They got it right the first time with Gene Wilder. Even though the original was released in the advent of the 1970s, the inimitable Tim Burton thought his big brain could improve on perfection. As much as I acknowledge Johnny Depp as being one of the most important actors of his generation, despite his many well-publicised transgressions, he could never come close to the ORIGINAL. I wonder how Tim Burton would feel if one of his films was re-imagined. He'd probably lose his lunch.

he gets his lines right, and its like all the effort is done in trying to do that, and he doesn't move his face in any funny cartoony ways or appear to have any fun with it. Contrast his performance with that of the three candy reviewers in this scene- they move their faces in very camp ways when tasting the chocolate and their voices change. Timmy Wonka just seems flat.. and they aren't even the good guys!
