This superhero adventure finds Batman (George Clooney) and his partner, Robin (Chris O'Donnell), attempting to the foil the sinister schemes of a deranged set of new villains, most notably the melancholy Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who wants to make Gotham into an arctic region, and the sultry Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman), a plant-loving femme fatale. As the Dynamic Duo contends with these bad guys, a third hero, Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone), joins the ranks of the city's crime-fighters.

Mr. Freeze is a cold guy so I think Arnold's acting fits, and at least with him the implication was that he's just so strong that he can just lightly hit people and send them flying. I do wish they made Poison Ivy more genuinely caring about plants and nature like she usually is (here she's just hypocritical and willing to let nature die and just replace it with her ones.)
@decusq

Despite how cheesy this movie is it's still a fun turn your brain off movie. And Arnold as Mr Freeze might be bad on paper but I can't say he doesn't do a good job. He does look like he's having fun being this tragic villain in almost every scene. Uma Thurman as Poison ivy was a fun character too for how vile she was. Overall it's a dumb movie but it can still be fun in the right mood.

Yes, this movie is very tonally all over the place. As others have already pointed out, it never knows what it wants to be. A comedy? A drama? A genuine action movie? Is it serious? Is it funny? Is it dark? Is it lighthearted? Schumacher just threw all those ideas into a blender with this thing. In the space of five minutes we have pun humor, campy spoofing of tropes, a fully choreographed action sequence, and depictions of torture and murder. It doesn't work because it never picks a lane. I would have been fine with the movie being any one of these things, but all of them just makes it a confounded mess. There are things to enjoy in this, for sure. But they're few and far between.
@bobbyhavens
@bobbyhavens 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, it wasn`t Schumacher`s fault. He was a friend of Tim Burton for years and wanted to stick to Batman`s dark,Gothic roots like Tim did but after toy sales plummeted and parent groups expressed outrage at the "grotesque violence" and "morally confusing themes" in "Batman Returns" Warner producers and editors forced him to make cheesier,more family-friendly films. Joel Schumacher:" My intention with "Batman & Robin" was never to offend,merely to entertain and in so far as I have failed to do that,I sincerely apologize." R.I.P. Mr. Schumacher.
@MAMoreno
@MAMoreno 2 жыл бұрын
And it's not just that the movie is both serious and comedic, but it's drastically one thing or the other at any given moment. The Alfred scenes are the best part of the movie, but they wouldn't be tonally or stylistically out of place in, say, The Dark Knight Rises. Meanwhile, other scenes are full-on William Dozier-style 1960s Batman.

Before Batman: The Animated Series, Mr. Freeze was a generic villain without any notable origin, but The Animated Series reworked the character and gave him this tragic backstory. Fun Facts: According to schumacher, he was told by WB to make the movie more "TOYETIC". So hes not supposed to be the only one responsible for B&R. WB was already considering to make a fifth batman movie ahead of B&R production. The villain was supposed to Scarecrow portrayed by Coolio(I wouldnt know if that part is truth. He was probably going to be recast). Also the Harley Quinn(Jokers daughter in that universe) would have been the other villain in the movie. Scarecrow and her would resurrect the joker using his fear toxin. It was going to be named batman unchained,

As a kid who grew up in the 2000s, this and Batman forever were complete awesome fun. I’m almost ashamed to say I still love it 😭 While Danny Elfman’s music in Batman 89 and Batman Returns in beyond perfect and basically defines the character in that era, the updated themes in Batman forever and this movie are almost as cool to me. Nearly every scene is iconic in this movie, whether it’s for bad or awesome reasons. Rubber lips baby! Bat credit card lmaooo. Joel Schumacher (Shoe-Mocker) directed multiple classics throughout his career, my fav being The Lost Boys!! Schumacher’s 80s vampire classic includes some of the coolest vampire kills of all time and a soundtrack that will induce chills

The main reason why people were so disappointed with this movie was it was such a departure from the first 2 movies in this series of Batman movies and while Batman Forever was a pretty stark contrast as well, there was still some serious moments that helped ground it in reality a little more. This just goes full on into the more goofy, campy tone and while it is a bit more cohesive than Batman Forever, most want to see Batman taken more seriously or at least in Tim Burton's more Gothic aesthetic.

Horrible movie, but Mr. Freeze is one of the best written villains from Batman, though it wasn’t used properly in this movie. “Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero”, the animated movie, is much better. And TBH, the animated movie “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” is one of the best Batman movies, period. Really, the whole animated TV show from the 90’s was top-tier Batman content, IMO.

I think the biggest sin was that it's a sequel only made for kids to a series that started out dark, creepy and even kinda depressing movies from Tim Burton to this. I get it, it was made to please whinny parents and McDonald's with this and BF, but look how that turned out. Many say it's a so-bad-it's-good kinda movie but because it's nearly 2 hours (which is pretty long) the laughter dies down 40 minutes later and just becomes a slog to get through that it feels like a chore to finish.
@MAMoreno
@MAMoreno 2 жыл бұрын
There's a way to make it work. Batman Returns is utterly silly in its own right (I mean, an army of penguins with rockets on their backs?), but it also has effective dramatic moments. The difference is that the tonal gap between the silly moments and the dramatic moments is less drastic in that film than it is in Batman Forever or (especially) Batman & Robin. Joel Schumacher portrays the Bruce Wayne scenes about as sincerely as Christopher Nolan does, while Tim Burton keeps Michael Keaton's trademark quirkiness running throughout similar moments in his Batman films. The only time that Burton plays it completely straight is near the end of Batman '89 when Vicki confronts Bruce in the Batcave, and that scene is generally considered one of the weakest moments in either Burton Bat-flick.

16:54 Fun fact(or not so fun fact depending on where you stand on this type of thing): The bidding scene is a real thing that can happen,it’s called Charity dating. Basically it’s a process of raising money for charity where a man or woman is being taken on a date by the person donating money to charity. In some cases that involve celebrities, they will help charitable causes by auctioning off a paid date with themselves to a loyal audience. Basically to make a long explanation short, the highest bidder wins a free date(almost always a dinner)and the money they bid is sent to the charity they’re donating to.

I completely forgot John Glover was in this movie! That's 3 roles now he's had in DC that I can count. Arnold is the best part of this film, his puns just hit different, and you can tell he just had fun with it.

This movie is undeniably flawed, but there are some genuinely great bits with Alfred that make the movie worth revisiting.

This movie was so bad that we didn't get a Batman movie for 8 years. until in 2005, Christopher Nolan gave us "Batman Begins", reviving the franchise with a great origin story.

I remember seeing it in the theater on Friday night: Batman Forever was fun enough, we liked Schumacher's style after the dreary Tim Burtons, and we were used to seeing 90's Arnold make corny money-line puns in all his movies. And then, less than ten minutes into the movie...boinky cartoon sound-effects in the ice fight. And the whole mood of the nine-dollar-a-ticket audience immediately went DOWN.

Two things I want to say: 1. When looking back on his time as Robin, Chris O'Donnell remarked that _Batman Forrever_ felt like he was making a movie; _Batman and Robin_ felt more like a toy commercial. 2. Did you notice how huge the eyeholes in Batman's cowl are in this movie? It really defeats the purpose of the eyeshadow.
