slobomotion Me too! Granted I discovered the world of James Bond in the 1990's but if I could be James Bond for one day I would be Timothy Dalton's version since he played the character the closest to how Ian Fleming wrote him. I still see Dalton in my minds eye when I read many of Fleming's original novels including Casino Royale (1953) which is Tim Dalton's favorite of the original books.

A brilliant and charismatic actor and man , who in my opinion was so underrated . Timothy Dalton could play anything . He was that good . If you think Olivier was great , Dalton was better . If you are familiar with all his work I have no doubt you will completely agree. This talented man was a master of his craft . I will never forget him as Edward Rochester in the mini series "Jane Eyre ". What a performance that was . Timothy Dalton has much to be proud of .

Broccoli & Saltzman were interested in casting Timothy Dalton as early as 1969. However, they mutually concluded that he was young at the time. Broccoli sounded him out again in 1980, but Michael Wilson said that Dalton was not interested at the time. It's too bad that Dalton did not take over the role earlier, with writing and directing that really supported him. Timothy Dalton was the James Bond that Ian Fleming almost certainly would have accepted and enjoyed.

Timothy Dalton was a great Bond in my opinion. If The Living Daylights and Licence To Kill had a different writer and director maybe he would made more than two, but the producers relied on the same team of writers and director since For Your Eyes Only and The Living Daylights was written when Pierce Brosnan was still attached to make the movie before he had to bow out on short notice. Then the press blamed Dalton for the box office failure of LTK which is nonsense. He never got a fair shake.

He's my favorite too. Even in his other films, Dalton just outshines everyone with how good an actor he is (search Hawks on KZbin, AMAZING movie and he's terrific in it, as well as Framed). I just wish he got at least one more film, cus we all love trilogies. The Property of a Lady had a promising story, and I think it would've been the film that made him more popular.

Yeah. When I saw "Goldeneye" in the movie theater, for the first half of the film I kept wishing T.D. was playing the role (it was originally written with him in mind - see previous comments below). Then during the second half of the film I started wondering if Sean Bean (006) and P.B. should have traded places...ie. S.B. portray 007 and P.B. portray 006.

@Riddler95 - Mr. Dalton was the ORIGINAL choice - before Pierce Brosnan was offered the role - for "The Living Daylights." Dalton had a scheduling conflict - either with the movie, "Brenda Starr," or a stage play he was performing in at the time. Thus, the producers then went to Brosnan, who, as you say, had a conflict with "Remington Steele." But that's why the Bond producers then went BACK to Dalton.
@mithrandir848913 жыл бұрын
@orgasmicide2 I agree with you, the best Brosnan's Bond movie is Goldeneye because, as you said, it's really dark, but after your comment I also agree with the fact that this Bond movie was for Dalton. Great actor, but underrated.
@rampageclover97888 жыл бұрын
Moore should have retired after Moonraker and Dalton should have started with For Your Eyes Only. They tried to make Moore's final 3 movies more dark and it just didn't work. Dalton would have made those movies unbelievable thrillers.

@orgasmicide2 - You're actually closer than you think when you say: "...it seemed tailor-made for Dalton." According to "Goldeneye" magazine, one of the movie's writers, Michael France, is quoted to have said: "We didn't know it would be PIerce when we started. It was sort of assumed that it would be Tim...I tried to write it with him in mind: a lot of physical action, some emotional intensity with double agent Trevelyan, and not a lot of humour."
@intrepidman22213 жыл бұрын
@legatofancier I'm not sure if you're correct about the producers not wanting Dalton in 1969. I've seen different interviews with Mr. Dalton saying he was offered the role in 1969, and he consistently states he turned the role down because he thought he was too young at the time (and didn't want to follow Sean Connery in the role.) But I could be wrong about that. I have read that Dana Broccoli, "Cubby's" wife, was the one to suggest Dalton. Just as she'd suggested Connery.
@christhornycroft36862 жыл бұрын
We've strayed so far from the original intent of the character, I don't think fans know who Bond actually is or want that kind of Flemingesque character. Craig got so much criticism for being too "serious" and "gritty" that his final 2 films were basically just emo Marvel or DC. Most of these people have never read the novellas. They just either grew up with Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan and they think that's what he's supposed to be. I'll give Roger credit - he had a couple of movies with badass, realistic spy thriller moments, but Brosnan was just a cartoon character model in a suit with the one-liners of Jonah Hill from Superbad if they were made PG-13. Dalton will always be my favourite, followed by Connery and then Craig. He embodied the character from the novels and felt like an actual person. Craig had a lot of that in Casino Royale, but then the pacing and tone of his other films was all over the place and NTTD was basically emo Moonraker. I like the idea of a constant theme and narrative from film to film with one actor, but with Craig, that idea felt tacked on. That should have been the plan from the start and every film should have had a rough outline of a script leading up to Bond's final demise, if that's where you're going. I don't have a problem with Bond dying. I have a problem with his death not being earned. Nothing felt earned by the end of Craig's tenure. But Dalton had one great film with bad villains and one okay film with great villains. I would have liked to have seen him in a 3rd film, especially given who followed him. Property of a Lady would have gotten all the bigots out to protest "wokeness." But as it was, Goldeneye was probably the most "woke" movie of the bunch.

@legatofancier I'd like to remind you that Ian Fleming originally wanted Roger Moore to be cast as Bond, some people think he wanted Cary Grant, but this isn't the case. Originally he was very disappointed that Connery got cast as Bond, but he did grow to like him in the end.

I guess the whole point of Bond is the cheesy cartoonish stuff. That's why Moore and Brosnan are so beloved. With them, they weren't so much human as they looked like they could be knocked over by a feather. Charismatic wimps. Connery managed to combine the 2 parts of Bond in a way that made him almost human, and Dalton at least attempted to make Bond believable, but Craig is the first guy since Connery to be the Bond of the novels.

What a time for 007. Back then when Roger Moore was getting too old they had Pierce Brosnan AND Timothy Dalton to consider... these days we have nobody that is at all Bond like, let alone bloody perfect. I wanted to like Daniel Craig as Bond but I've gone right off him since Casino Royale. He's just a bland, boring, miserable robot - and I just can't get over the buzz-cut blond hair, it's just so unBond-like. He looks like a Russian villain agent or something.. a la Putin. Also as Dalton says in this video, "I'm in reasonably good shape, but you must remember that Bond uses his mind.. his ingenuity, he thinks.. he's not a Rambo..." And now they've turned Bond into some utterly miserable, robotic muscle man with a shaved head. Looking at all the British actors around today of around the right age and so on none of them scream Bond.
