I saw most of the movies up for the 1980 Academy Award, including “Ordinary People” (OP). I think that “The Elephant Man” (TEM) maybe should’ve won. OP is a very good movie - I do think it plays with the emotions of the audience a bit - and I’m a big fan of Robert Redford, as well as the rest of the cast. But TEM just seemed like tremendous cinema to me. I think that TEM was directed by David Lynch and it’s actually a very different movie from most he makes even though it’s almost a pseudo horror movie. It’s hard to say what genre TEM really is - drama? But great acting in TEM, that’s for sure, and the black-and-white cinematography is terrific.
