NASI LEMAK is FREE in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 🇲🇾 ??

Nasi Lemak is the national dish in Malaysia so of course I had to try it. I went looking for the best Nasi Lemak restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. I asked some local people in Kampung Baru which restaurant had the best one and eventually I ended up in Nasi Lemak Kak Chuk goo.gl/maps/G7...
I had Nasi Lemak with what I thought was beef and chicken but it was apparently squid instead of beef. Also I had some tea which was apparently water 🤣 Anyway, it was delicious!
After that I decided to go on a dessert hunt and got a place recommended that served great Cendol Biasa. The name of the place was Mamam Place @ Lorong Raja Bot goo.gl/maps/NB...

Tim, in Malaysia we have the "belanja" (treat) culture. It's not strange to have strangers paying for your food - sometimes by the owner of the restaurants sometimes by other customers. Usually if we "belanja" strangers, it is because we find them "nice" or "respectful". To Malaysians, it is one way of making others happy and to us, it is a form of "good deeds". Take it as a compliment.

Malaysian are friendly in general, not just the malays. Its just that some people are more business-centric than others. So much so that to them, every cent counts but as long as they are not scamming or taking advantage of people (particularly tourists/foreigners), I think thats fine. This is my personal opinion and I'm sure a lot of people wont like it, I do believe seeing a tourist/traveller vlogging the experience tend to make people more *ahem* generous. I'm not saying that makcik is one of them. Maybe shes just happy to see a random tourist coming to her stall when theres a more famous place, Wanjo on the main street.

@@farah2044 of course I agreed with you,mayb it was becus me n my husby encountered n experienced with the help of the Malay twice,once during young age like 20-21 (40 years ago🤭)n we travelled at nite past by Malay kampung n tyre was punctured at the kpg road,we were quite scared cus it was dark n quiet without hand phone,the young Malay man stay beside the road help us to changed the tyre ,so grateful to him.I never forget him.🙏🏼.Another tyre issue was last year at rest area from kl to Kuantan,his 1st time encounter tis at rest area with his hilux,it seems not easy for him to did it alone cus he said the tyre not easy to remove,all tis while he has got his company foreman n worker to do it,then came the 3 Malays lorry drivers offered to help n they changed his punctured tyre.What a relief for him n he thanks them By Giving them some cash for their dinner as he has to leave immediately.Farah,tis were our real experienced n I complimented it from my heart.

She saw you as a guest, not as a customer thats why you dont need to pay. This is common practice in Malaysia especially towards travellers, whether youre filming or not. 22:12 Peninsular Malaysia timing is a bit off in order to standardize with the East Malaysia. In the 1980s Malaysian Standard Time was introduced so the time is same throughout the whole contry, which may not be accurate as Peninsular follows the timing of Sabah which is 1000km away. 25:55 "Mamam" is a cute way to say "makan" usually used by the kids 27:29 that green jelly is the actual cendol.

That is not beef that is sotong@cuttle fish. Cendol is pronounced as Chendol. The green noodle like jelly is made of rice flour flavoured with pandan@screw pine. Mamam is just a slang word meaning 'eat'. It originates from moms talking to babies by saying maa..mam during feeding time. If you want to try authentic local food, try nasi kerabu, nasi dagang, nasi kandar.

Rice is basically the staple food here in Malaysia. What you had with Nasi Lemak was cuttlefish/squid. It's a soaked cuttlefish. You can ask for less gravy/sambal when ordering so it's not overwhelming. You can customize your order when you go the stall/mamak and restaurant. We can make adjustments to your preference.

wanjo starting from street stall to small restaurant and now they upgrade to better place. Its always a reason why people still go there and pick them as no 1 in Kg baru. And they themselves can have a hot spot KG baru area which is very hard for outside people to develop something inside the kampung. They upgrade their place for comfort, and to cater more customers. To be honest, they still keep the same recipe, quality on their nasi lemak, its still the same as 15-20 years ago. In economic, they hired majority malaysian people(malay), and yet the workers happily willing to work there, where common locals, not really interested to work in this type of business. Im a local malaysian, what the owner did, i gave double thumbs up. The restaurant became bigger n nicer, but their service & quality goes the same way. 👍 Its a MUST try nasi lemak, when local recommends, there is always a reason. We as local also didnt like to go for big or nicer place for local dish, cause of the pricing. But there is exception where it is place is worth it, and may have some history in it. 😉 have a safe journey.

The reason the sundown is later is because in 1981 the PM Mahathir standardise East Malaysia and Peninsular Malaysia’s time zones into Malaysian Standard Time (MST) which is equivalent to GMT+8. It was supposed to be GMT +7 previously (like Thailand) . I think Singapore is use GMT +8 also.

Normal Cendol means Plain Cendol....no add on or extra stuff included 😊 If you eat cendol you must stir it first to mix or to blend all the contents inside it before eating.

Actually the nasi lemak feels very spicy for you because your rice was doused with sauce. Even most locals dont do that. --- Pick a portion of rice. A little sambal, on the side. Scoop bit by bit when u eat the rice. Not to mix it all over. Eating with hand is local Malay culture, but for Nasi Lemak or Nasi Goreng a lot of locals also use fork and spoon. So that we can scoop stuff up bit by bit. But Fried chicken u cant avoid using hands... Since the rice is soft, Nasi Lemak has anchovies and peanuts for crunch. For the side dish, pick one dry one, one wet one. or just one of either. Dont overdo or you'll overpower the subtle coconut and ginger flavour of the rice and youre basically eating side dish, not nasi lemak. Locals usually eat Fried Chicken or Beef/Chicken Rendang as side dish. If u ask for Squid Sambal, then dont take the additional sambal anymore. After the bite, if its a little spicy, cool your tongue with a bite of the cucumber given. The best drink to accompany your nasi lemak is the local ice tea. Ask for Teh O Ais (Plain ice tea) or Teh O Ais Limau (Plain ice tea with lime), or Teh Ais (ice Milk tea) and ask for less sweet or "kurang manis" If its still too sweet, ask for "ais kosong" which is basic ice water than you can mix to dilute your ice tea.

Bro, we wash hands before using them to eat rice. So if a shop serves you nasi/rice that can be eaten by using hands there will be sinki or water pot ready just for the purpose. You can ask the worker. And by the way, those are not beef rendang but squid sambal. Enjoy your stay in Malaysia.

Me my self has been encounter a person 'belanja' the whole customer in restaurants. He just pay everything and go away. When other customer want to pay, the cashier said its been paid already. People not even have a chance to say thank you and he even not look back at the restaurant.

My question is mainly regarding your English language - how do you become so superbly fluent in a second (or third, or fourth) language? Unfortunately growing up in New Zealand we were never given an opportunity at school to study languages except a very basic intro to Te Reo Maori, our supposed native language that we all should learn, but dont. Anyway, have loved the couple of posts I have watched and are incredibly impressed with your language ability and wonder how it is possible to be so fluent in a language you are not born with or is not the language of the country you grow up in, By the way, I watched this video because I really want to eat as much local food as possible when on my short trip to Malaysia. Thanks for watching Reece! The advantage of living in a small country as Belgium is that we learn both French and English from a young age. French at 8 years old and English at 12 years old. I must say nowadays my English is better than my French because I use it more often. I wouldn't say my English level is that high though. I often have to search for words or say something in a non efficient way 😅 Anyway, Malaysia has great food so you won't be disappointed. The original and classic nasi lemak is just a set of rice, hard boiled egg, anchovies with sambal, slices of cucumber and with fried nuts. The rest is just added up. Enjoy your stay here, Time. One suggestion : visit west Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak. You'll be surprised with so many things including the spectacular view 😊

I always take 1/2 rice because normally I will mix it with 2 types of side dishes. Eg: daging rendang + sunny side up eggs, sambal petai + eggs (always have sunny side up eggs in my nasi lemak 😅) And I won't add the plain sambal, because the gravy from the side dishes are sufficient enough for me. The Cendol Stall. Yes I’d been there. I love their Durian Cendol.

Hi Tim, U hit the jackpot For me personally I don't recommend wanjo , I am not promoting other spot but there's a lot better nasi lemak stall by the roadside with greater taste,not just better taste,compare to wanjo,with reasonable price and some of them sell Malaysian authentic dessert (kuih) , And then,about free food, that's a treat, it's not just happening because "oh they're foreigner and a KZbinr promoting the spot" No, it's kinda normal thing I guess, Sometime people pay for elders, sometime pay for whole family on their next table,sometime foreigner, it's just like when we have extras, we share it , it might turn someone bad day into the best day who knows right . Anyway, have fun, enjoy your stay , enjoy the food, *Tips: Find a weekly night market. We call it "Pasar Malam" ,
