I bought an Amico Arc180 Dc stick welder from Home Depot but once it came in I ended up getting the Arc200DC model for the same price as the 180 the reason why I bought it was the dual voltage choices. So I have the ability to use it for small projects where I don’t have 220 volts available. It’s an inverter machine and I’m happy with its performance.

Ordered some 7018 1/8 hoping to have an easier time running a bead. The 3/32 6011 I still plan to use for tacking but from what I’ve researched the 7018 is a dream to work with. I bought one of these (mine is branded "Merrco") recently and immediately opened it up before using it, to inspect it for badly soldered joints and any other obvious assembly flaws. The only thing I noticed was a small piece of the circuit board was broken off at one of the corners; perhaps it fell during assembly and chipped off. I put it back together and began using it, and I am very impressed. It seems almost counterintuitive to have 120 amps coming out of this little box, welding 2" x 2"x 1/4" angle iron with ease. All of my welding was previously done with a Lincoln AC-225 (before it was stolen), and so far this little thing is holding its end quite nicely. The only thing I don't like about it so far is the location of the power switch; it's at the back of the machine and under the power cord, which feels a bit clumsy to reach, especially with gloves on. One thing I would recommend, is to not have it running close to where you're grinding or cutting, because the cooling fan has a strong suction that can pull sparks or the the electrically conductive dust from abrasive wheels into the machine. That can possibly cause short circuits and premature failure of the machine. I would've incorporated air filtration in the air intake side of a machine like this to reduce that risk.
@anthonypelletier8978
@anthonypelletier8978 2 жыл бұрын
There are actually inserts that you can get for fans this size that have a filter on them! They are typically used for computer cases to keep out dust, but I wouldn't put it past it working on here.

Great video and thank you. I have a Dekopro 160 amp Smart Panel and it burns 1/8" Lincoln 6011 very well, but , heads up, it absolutely sucks with 1/8" Forney 6011. At the same welder settings as the Lincoln rods, the Forney quickly burn back, making it very difficult to maintain an arc. My video suggestion is to compare different brands of the same type of rod (for example 6011) to observe how they burn with your Dekopro.
@papajon6715
@papajon6715 3 жыл бұрын
For the driveway/garage welder, especially with the Red Chinese welders I'd recommend 6011 and 7014 because both rods run AC/DC +/-. Many inexpensive and cheap welders don't produce the DC Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) to run 6010 properly, if at all, but will happily burn the essentially equivalent 6011. Many are AC only which rules out 6010 and 7018, and the 7018AC isn't all that they claim. The 7014 is also an iron rod and essentially equivalent to 7018 but runs nicer, smoother, and does not require a rod oven, just keep the rods dry. That being said most contract and structural work where the rods are specified by code or the engineer will spec 7018 which will require a rod oven. Now I will admit my prejudices, I learned on 1/8" DC (only) stick with a pickup mounted Lincoln motor drive and 3 phase coffee grinders after school at the local welding shop and now that I'm retired I decided to pick it up again because building things in my hands is so satisfying. I've never used any rods other than 1/8" because that is all the shop used (and where I get my rods now). I also picked up an 180amp (240v) transformer MIG using 0.035 flux because I weld out in the driveway at the end of a 33 foot 6 gauge cord but I don't know what I think about it. Perhaps I just prefer my vintage AC only (generic) Thunderbolt and Century 230/140 AC/DC which are both transformers. Thank you for your series of videos...

I’ve measured a number of these small machines using a clamp meter on one of the leads. Generally, they’re low. Not too bad to about 40-60, or so. But above that the output is compressed from the reading. None of the 200 amp machines made it. The best one was about 165. The others stopped at around 140-150. Not terrible, but not close to the ratings. None could do 6010 reliably.
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 3 жыл бұрын
I ended up putting a meter on this and found the same thing. With a machine like this, I just plan on 6011, which is good enough for anything that's going to be done with a $100-ish machine.

Hi Tim, it's good there's You Tube and people like you testing tools and welders, as most of these cheap Chinese welders are Way overrated and their specs are not what they claim !! I bought a inverter welder from EBay claiming 315 amps on 380vac, and on 240vac. The max I could get with the digital meter set at 315amps, was a measly 127 amps wide open !! Measured with a Fluke DC Clampmeter. It welds great for 1/8" 6011, 6010 and 7018, EXCEPT 7018 overhead. As It needs a little more Oomph like 10 amps more because holding at tight arc will snuff out the arc. So I had to finish the overhead with my. Pow Con 400 smt. So my cheap welder isn't worth much when I can't finish a weld with it. Great Video. Thanks

Do a update after about 2 years. The biggest issue with Chinese welders is longevity. After about 2-3 years is when they show their true colors in performance and quality. I’d they even last that long. Both my AHP’s burnt out of had issues after about a year of light use.

I've had it almost 2 years and it still works fine, though I only use it occasionally because it's portable. Hey man, I know I don’t gotta tell you this but its just a reminder. Use your safety glasses my man, I am in college to become an industrial technician. They also learn us MMA, MIG and some oxy acetylene welding as well. I nearly lost an eye due to a hot piece of slag bouncing off my idiotic mouthmask into my eye (under my safety glasses) I had another piece hit me right in the throat. I suffered 3rd degree burns on my throat and 2nd degree ones to both my left eyelids. The lower one was the worst. Yes it got into my eye while wearing safety glasses, it hurt like hell. So I can’t imagine how bad it would be to get a piece directly into your eye. I just wanted to put that out there. I really like your videos man, I have learnt a lot from them already! Have similar machine (different paint scheme) and you will notice that the power-in cord is marked 14 ga (on mine). So real limit on how many amps you can feed into the machine from a wall outlet. Once you step up to 240v the input wire size is much less of an issue. I measured the welding cables and they came out at #5 wire. Helps with weight and stiffness, but again, an ampacity limiter. I'm sure it's OK for what's inside the box. But wouldn't try to use with a big transformer machine ... So my heavy leads are TWECO connected and the light machine leads are Dinse connected. Can't swap, which is good. Great thing about these is how light and portable :-)

Hi Tim, Just ordered you full training courses. Question, I purchased the Tooliom 135A stick/lift TIG welder. I had watched a review and original it was a 220/110vac welder. But when I received it is just a 110 unit. The size is really small and seems to makes sparks.... I originally purchased it because of the 110 usage but I kind of also wanted the option of 220. I can't seem to get 7018 3/32 or 1/8 stick to weld with out sticking all the time and when I do get it to run the weld is real flat and shinny. Looks like a piece of obsidian rock. Anyway do you maybe suggest the Deko Pro? Looking forward to starting you courses. At 75 I am starting welding all over again. Has a Miller 110 wire Matic 135 and a 220 buzz box but sold some time ago. Thanks, Dave...

Thanks for purchasing the courses! 1/8” 7018 likely won’t run very well on 110 volts. Generally, stick machines running on 110 max out around 100 amps or so, which is a bit low for that rod. I run 3/32” 7018 around 90 amps, so that should be a better bet. Is the shiny surface there after you chip off the slag? The Deko Pro works good for the price, though the amp readout was a little off in mine. Not sure how it compares to that one. I don’t get notifications for comment responses, so if you have any other questions, just reply to the course purchase email and I’ll help you out. 👍

Hey, Tim. Great series of tutorial videos - I appreciate your knowledge and presentation, it makes the important points easy to understand. A simple question - All of my 240 devices in my shop run systems like timers, circuit boards, lights, etc. which require the plugs to have a neutral (so it can pull a 120V leg off internally) so my sockets are all 4-cavity. I see that this welder has a three-pronged plug. Is it made so that it matches the two hot prongs and the ground prong on the 4-cavity socket (i. e. just ignoring the neutral connection in the socket) or will I need to make a jumper connector? I guess I could add a separate 3 cavity socket next to my existing 240 socket - I'd have to look at the relative cost, I guess? Sorry for the basic question but it would help me to know. Thanks Bb

@TimWelds 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a great question. The outlets have different spacing, so it won’t fit. I’ve made adapters for all of them over the years. If you’re only going to use the welder on that plug, the cheapest thing to do is just cut the plug off the welder and install the type you need from the hardware store.

@domenicdefrancesco

Hey Brice. The plug that has 4 pins with 120/240 is called a NEMA 14-50. I attached a NEMA 14-50 plug with the neutral pin removed on the end of a 3 conductor 10AWG (for 30A) or use 8AWG (for 50A or for longer distances), and on the end put a NEMA 6-50 receptacle (like most welders use). The 14-50 plug with the neutral pin removed will plug into a dryer receptacle or stove receptacle, and is likely what you have. I made my cable about 25', and I used the 600V flexible SOOW cable only because it's insulation is thicker and less likely for something to cut into and reach the copper conductors. You can use the thinner 300V SJOOW cable. I also purchased a relatively cheap 20' 6-50 extension cable on Amazon to extend my cable if needed. With the two cables i can go to anyone's home and plug in my welder and run it at full power. I'll also use the same cables for my future electric car.

Hello Tim! I’m currently a student and my dream is to start my own business. I don’t have the thousands of dollars or credit to buy a name brand stick welder or a heavy duty truck to pull a huge generator…I need something that is reasonably priced but also has a high duty cycle that can handle 1/8 rods most of the day. One that could possibly do tig as well but not necessary. What welder would you recommend?

@@borisgraell All I know is that I have run continuous beads, or multiple beads with minimal breaks and it has never shut itself off due to overheating. I have only run it up to 85-90 amps though, since that is the max I can pull with a 115v outlet. I am sure on higher settings with 220v power it would force you to give it a rest.

I turned the welder wide open 315 amps on 240vac, on its digital meter and measured it with a Fluke Clampmeter and. 127 amps !! is all it has, I only needed 10 amps more to weld 1/8" 7018 overhead, as it kept snuffing out the arc, so I had to finish the weld with my Pow Con 400 smt. But within its 127 amps it welds NICE. But 14ga. !!?

I got one of these bad boys this week and I cannot get an arc started using 1/8 rod. I turned it up to 114 amps which is the max it would let me go on 115v and the electrode (6011) just kept sticking rather than starting. It's been a few years since I arc welded but I never had issues starting an arc. I might try a 3/32 rod and see if that's any better. I have to assume my rods just need more juice. Last time I used them was on DC 24v car battery welder and they worked great! But I had like 300-500 amps to work with.

Have you done longer runs , say a whole rod , on 110 volts? I have an even smaller machine that pops breakers regular if you try to go more than a couple inches of weld even with 3/32 rod. Does a great job on 220 volts but not a great lower voltage item. This of course negates the portability factor of these small rigs.

Hang in there, it takes a bit of practice. Start out by moving fast like striking a match when you touch it and see if that helps. I would also turn the machine up a bit higher while you are getting the hang of striking an arc. As far as setup goes, if you have a weak electrical supply, such as an undersized extension cord, the rod will tend to stick worse, so that’s one thing to check. We’ve all been there, but it’s worth working through.
