@Alice Wang: Well, if women and men were cappuccino machines, people (both men and women) would probably find the man doing it very unattractive and probably enjoy the woman doing it. Come to think of it, there are all sorts of banal things that people find interesting simply by the fact that a woman is doing them. A woman's femaleness I guess turns everything to gold in many people's eyes, and I guess women are somehow oppressed by that fact?

My daughter is now 27, and a blues singer in Nashville. Early on I inflicted on her the twin curses of a love of music and of reading, and she's taken both and run with them! A shout out to Led Zep, Tolkien and Kurt Vonnegut!

+Volvican Well, I hope it isn't. Was that about America or the entire world? I mean, keeping in mind that many people don't have the interesting books tó read or money to go to the library and hire the books, still I hope it isn't true.

It's not lack of books causing illiteracy, it's trauma, poverty, parents who are undersupported, and schools that don't give kids the time and space to love learning, but focuses on tests.

My parents pretty much INSISTED that my brother and I read. Not reading came with spanking. I have a learning disability where math is concerned, so even spanking didn't work for that. Yelling at me didn't work either. But the whole reading thing, thankfully became as natural and necessary as breathing.

IMO - Reading has turned into a lost art. Printed books are nostalgic, and there's such an influx of multimedia content that the fundamental skill of reading is overlooked and (even early on in life) doesn't become a priority. Something to consider is that giving a child a book doesn't ensure that they'll read it, read it fully, or understand the messaging behind it. I think we need to solve this issue from a different approach, like finding their passion through whichever genre would resonate with their personal interests.

I have a question . People make these shows like POWER of WOMEN. But had guys had a similar show like POWER OF MEN wouldn’t it be called sexist ? The very fact that people are okay with such a title shows that they truly think women are inferior. A person who would be a true feminist cannot unsee the title. Am I thinking right or there is a point I am missing here ?
