The 3 books that changed my life and I would recommend them to anyone 1. Atomic Habits by James Clear ( great tips and tricks to staying consistent and productive) 2. Man's Search For Meaning by Victor Frenkel (really makes you appreciate freedom and being alive in general) 3. The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge (It's about looking at the big picture and not stressing over the small stuff)

I also kinda approach some of these "scientific" self-help books with a bit of skepticism. I love science and empirical research, but in the self-help category it can sometimes feel like they're just trying to appeal to something to give their ideas more weight, even when the science isn't actually that rigorous. And then people look over the lack of rigor because they like what the book has to say. I feel like this can lead some people to following sometimes-not-so-good advice with too much confidence, in part because they have the impression that something is scientifically backed.

Re: Why We Sleep. I did finish it two years ago or so and while I like the "Go to sleep, it's good for you" message it ended up saying that any and all problems in your life are caused by lack of sleep, from anxiety, to weight, to cancer. It felt fear-mongering and later I read that other scientists found some serious data problems in the first chapter. Sleep is good, yes, and I'm more careful about sleeping well now, but this book is not.
@kesmeby

I'm amazed how the evidence of data manipulation doesn't seem to have made a dent in Walker's sleep expert credentials. He makes so many absurd and exaggerated claims, then gets proven to be a fraud and yet people keep quoting his book and requesting him for interviews.

Thank you so much for this list! I once tried to get into reading but I ended up choosing a bad book and got turned off from reading books. I started Atomic Habits and I don’t even wanna put it down. I’m trying my best not to take TOO MANY notes. I’ve already gained some life changing insights on why I haven’t been able to succeed in certain things. Every few pages is giving me a breakthrough in my thinking. THANKS

Absolutely LOVED this video. You were concise and pretty accurate. I've read like 15 from your list and from those, I can say you have similar opinions to mine. One book I would like to add is Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert because that's a book which changed my life! It's about creative living and how you can genuinely feel happy being an artist. So, if you're an artist of any kind (writer, actor, musician, dance...any art!), Big Magic is a must read!

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is extremly underrated. It is a genious book about the understanding of "quality". It is not easy to get into it, because the thinking and the interpretation of words differs a lot from day to day thinking. It felt like very deep trip into a genius mind.

i would suggest the book "Body Mind Spirit - A Complete Guide To Unlocking Your Full Potential" What sets this book apart is its balanced perspective on holistic development. It seamlessly combines concepts from the realms of body, mind, and spirit, offering a comprehensive guide for those seeking a well-rounded transformation. The author's clear and concise writing style ensures that even complex ideas are accessible to readers of varying backgrounds.

I listened to the full audiobook why we sleep. I agree that it was quite boring but I read it due to quite severe issues with my own sleep. Ironically following some of the advice actually made it even harder for me to sleep while some helped. There is some good stuff in there, but I think it would make more sense to find a distilled version of the book because it is simply too boring in its current state.

'Dedicated' by Pete Davis was a real book, and I wish I had it in college, but it was nice even after I graduated. It's helped me through some important life decisions, and I think it's some nice pushback/alternative to some of the wacky stuff that folks like Jordan Peterson are peddling. Makes a good observation about where people seem to find satisfaction in life, and then riffs and elaborates on that. I also recently got through 'Nonviolent Communication' by Marshall Rosenberg was fantastic and super healing for me. Gives a clear and practicable framework for clear and compassionate communication and listening. I'll definitely take some of these recommendations from this video too! Like How To Not Die Alone lmao😂

what you relate to depends where you're starting from, doesn't it? i relate to david goggins because we had similar childhoods, but i wouldn't recommend him to most people i would rule out books from people who are unhappy and trying to therapise themselves, like jordan peterson. contrarily, if you're emotionally experienced then buddhism works well, and most people misinterpret that as a religion

Just discovered your channel a couple weeks ago. You seem like a cool knowledgeable person on this topic. So im wondering if you can help me with a question i have. So I am a recent graduate in Computer Science and want to instead go into Data Science industry instead of the traditional Software Developer/ Software Engineer career. So as someone like me who eventually one day wants to work in data science industry, is there an entry level job role that one can apply as a starting point and just get promoted/ level up to a data science in time rather than just trying to apply for a data science position from the get go? I dont mind starting at the bottom and working my way up the ladder. If anyone else have any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it?

The more books I read (currently at 254), the more reluctant I feel to rate them. Overall, it's just a matter of personal perspective, and there are so many personal biases that I don't believe we're able to take all of them into account. The same book, read at different times in our lives, might evoke completely different feelings. Regarding 'How To Not Die Alone,' it doesn't sound like a good idea to pursue dating without chemistry. If you don't feel anything, no amount of science alone will make you happy. I haven't read it yet, although it has been on my shelf for some time. But first, I need to read '4 Disciplines of Execution' because that's more important to me right now. But you won't read this comment anyway, so I guess I'm just spending time talking to myself 🤣.

Did you read the books or did u listen to the audiobooks? Are audiobooks just as good as reading?

It's funny that you feel asleep to why we sleep because the author is probably glad that it helped you sleep. I am slowly working through it and it helps to read it out-loud

Also thanks for reviewing Jay shetty's book because I was wondering whether to add it to my reading list. I listened to a lot of his calm sessions so it's good to know that it's a lot of fluff.

I'd definitely recommend "The Happiness Trap" by Russ Harris, or anything by Dr. Steven C. Hayes

“ I chose the manga version…. because there’s a manga version”😂😂😂 Yes!!! And thanks for the tip about “so good they can’t ignore you” I’d never heard of this book before.

I read 3 of Robert Greene's books, but I don't know what he's going on about with _Mastery_ . When I was a child, I was interested in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but I don't see how that is at all relevant to any aspect of my adult life.

LOL exactly what I thought as well - I was interested in dinosaurs and pokemon. I'm pretty sure archaeology is not for me though
