Tinashe’s changing what success in pop music can look like. Back in 2014 her song "2 On" featuring Schoolboy Q hit big on Billboard. With major success looming, Tinashe released projects that missed the charts but gained her a strong, loyal fanbase. In 2019 she left her major label to go independent. And judging from her massive online following today, her fans have stuck behind her.
In April, she dropped the highly meme-able track "Nasty" that many are calling the song of the summer. “Nasty” comes from her album Quantum Baby, the second part in a trilogy of new albums.
Justin Richmond spoke to Tinashe from Amazon Studio 126 about her new albums and what it took to go independent. They also talk about her role in The Polar Express and working with Tom Hanks.
You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite Tinashe songs here: open.spotify.c...

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

Shes bigger than everyone in the game as a female engineer, she focuses on music theory and future forward sounding music. No one is doing it like this. All while not even signed to a record label. With all respect, I see Tinashe above the industry.

I went on a long ride through the country in the dark last night and listened to my favorite Tinashe songs and they just make you FEEL. It makes you escape and start imagining and feeling a connection to the earth. I don’t know how to explain it but I feel a lot and can FEEL the vibes of the earth as I drive around, I feel it all and her music really does the same thing to me. Combine them, driving around and Tinashe.. it’s .. euphoric

I’ve been on the tinashe train for nearly 9 years now and miss thing’s tank is still full. The sound she curates is consistently refreshing. I would love to hear more about her dedication to music videos and dancing. Especially with that short film/music video on BB/Ang3l… who the hell is doing it like her?!?!?

Tinashe’s music has always been conceptually complex, but I have gotten the sense (and she confirmed in this interview) that her creating process is very instinctual, and that’s what I think is really cool about her. She’s not being too cerebral in her approach, she’s just doing her, and that authenticity is what helps her music genuinely connect with us as fans.

she’s too good for any label, and this know that. they know her worth, and the genius behind her art. this is an artist, not a beautiful face that has a talent. singing can be taught. when it comes to creating a sound from scratch is when we will place her in her own lane. she is what every main stream singer/entertainer should be!

I like how this interview shed more light on her technical side and her process of coming up with a song. I wonder how she decided what songs need to be divided into which parts if she describes Quantum Baby as an evolved BB/Angel if the songs were relatively made around the same period and if she went back to make more songs upon the upcoming releases. Love that she was giving Chainless some screentime in this interview😂 I really NEED some justice for NEEDS, I don't know how it didn't blow up. She has so many gems period! I also need to know what Enough is, I feel robbed of a sonic experience

Honest to god tinashe is a staple in the 2010’s we all knew she had the potential but she didn’t have her first own identity within music. Her public persona is sorta like plane. It was amazing to see some personality in her music like nasty. Also her engaging in the conversation online. Also speaking against misogynist men definitely kept me on her radar and I understood where to place her in my mind and didn’t forget. Solid branding.

Now we have an interesting place to leave off after the success of nasty. I can root for her as an independent artist. I think she should reintroduce herself to her new fan base and tell her core fan base to stop speaking about the past in the comments and enjoy her music objectively. It’s starting to affect new comers that are just catching up. makes it feel like she is lost potential when it’s not the case. she just needs good PR.
