Tina and Suse - I did the exact same thing when I stuck my horse, I’m 15.2/15.3 and my boy is a big 17. As the resident barn adult, I had to then run around sticking everything from the goat to the children. Also - love seeing all of the boys and the superstar Mr. Dinks!!

Hi ALL ,in the west Midlands on Friday night it was -7 , and on Saturday morning before going shopping .there was ice in side the car .hopefully this will help you OUT . And we had family going back to Cornwall ,Saturday night it was -1 wich is a lot better. Supposed to be getting better weather. Awww dinky Dinks. ❤ Shetlands are measured just in inches, rather than hands and 30” is about right for a Mini I think. My friend’s Donut was 30” anyway. 😊 They are all gorgeous boys. ❤ xx

Hi Tina, you can slight the bottom half of the measuring stick out by pressing the red button then the measuring arm and bubble will be the right way around and then you can measure that distance ☺️ x

You can measure Dinks with a measuring tape. You can stick a measuring tape onto the measuring stick and measure that way 🌷🐎Awww they are so cute 🌼

I show a miniature horse in combined driving (she is my lil pocket rocket!) and when we do recognized shows we need a pony measurement card. But with the minis we don't use hands for that reason...they're too tiny lol. So I just looked at my mini's measurement card and she's listed as 85cm. I don't know if that helps but no one in the mini/small pony world uses hands! At least in the US...could be different there! I still use hands for my medium ponies and up and now I'm thinking the whole cm instead of hands thing is because the sticks don't come that small!!

Another way of seeing how tall they could end up.......take a piece of string, hold at the elbow, then run down to fetlock. Then take the fetlock end, take straight up above the wither. That will give an idea of where they might end up. ❤

I have to admit my old horse who has sadly now passed away, when I bought him at 16 months old he was 14.2hh by the time he was 6 he was 17.2hh (we stopped measuring after that lol) he went on his grandparents height not His parents who were on 16hh and 16.1hh

I have a tradition Irish sport horse (76% tb, 24% Irish draft) and he was 16.3 hh when I bought him at 5 years old. He grew taller and much wider. He’s now 8 years old and stopped at 17.2hh. He wears oversize for everything and an 84 rambo rug. Good thing I’m 5’10” with long legs 😂

My mare was 16.2 as an 18 month old. She finished off at 17.3 hh. And she was a Thoroughbred cross! She stopped growing at age 8 years old. That's why I don't like to jump young horses before they're at least 7 years old, and their growth plates have more or less set up in place. I'll do poles and caveletti's with them, but their legs are wrapped in a cotton and polo wrap on all four legs. That way, when I transfer over to tendon guards, they are used to something on their legs. But I only ever work caveletti's once a week. I do a lot of trot work to build muscle, and a lot of canter work to build wind. I work 50% days, 70% days, and 1 day a week. I'll challenge them with a 100% day. But then they get the next day as a hack. No work at all. And I correct anything that is going wrong immediately. If they're dropping a shoulder in a circle, I'll counter bend them and ask them with my inside leg to lift that shoulder back up. It's so important when doing the Dressage portion of a 3 day event they they do the maneuvers correctly to get the better scores. Get them working off the hind end as opposed to the horse pulling itself forward with the front legs and be front end heavy. Irish sport horses don't necessarily have to be irish draught and thoroughbred, they can be irish draught and any other breed. There are a lot of irish draught and warmblood crosses who are irish sport horses

Their bones finish fusing at age 7 and regardless of breed they're not allowed to have a life height certificate until they're 7. This has to be completed by a vet and they have to be passed to do this I believe. Shoes have to come off and they're measured accurately and their height can be added to their passport. Lots of breeds however do carry on growing albeit much slower. Don't quote me on the above as I'm not 100% but that is my understanding. My mare is 7, 8 in June and is currently bum high. I'm hoping she's going to go upwards a bit rather than being downhill for her life. 😬

I guessed 16.1. My 3 horses are 16.1 (3 years), 16.2 1/2 (14) & 16.3 1/2 (8) I am a 5.6 ish as well. The top of my ear (or eye) is 16 hh and my shoulder is 14.2. I like horses that are 16.2-17hh the best. Hoping my 3 year old hits 16.3.

@LifeontheLeftRein mine are Arabian x warmblood Anglo Arabs. I bred them I really wanted a 15,2 as I am old and bones break easier. I have one 15hh his mamma was bigger. And the other with more warmblood genes is 17hh. U can do the rope test to see hoe much more he will grow. Measure from the bottom of the hocks to to top of the elbow then keeping the rope on the elbow lift the bottom bit from the hocks upwards towards the withers what is above the withers will be his height. Its difficult to explain but it works everytime. Old breeder trick

165cm is a good decent size and plus he is only 6 so I suspect he will grow another inch or two… my boy still grew another inch in his 8th year… and he is 175 now. It’s all down to what you’re use to, also I find the bigger ones are genuinely lovely and gentle. You’re doing a fab job Tina, he looks great! ♥️
