Next time try sticking a small flat blade screwdrivers(or whatever's handy) in-between the other 2 clutch shoe gaps so your not having to stretch the final spring more than the resting position of the other 2.

My humble experience Tinman, I would fit a stihl 381 cylinder on her and port the life out of the lower transfers, keep the intake port on the nail 75 and exhaust around 100 The squish will be good at 20 - 30 And a piped exhaust and by god you will see a completely different saw! I just used a farmertec cylinder as it’s cheaper for me in the U.K. and I can tell you she runs like a stock 660:) I know you want to keep this saw as near original but you gotta just for the experience put a 381 cylinder on them saws to get the best out of them! The transfer ports on the 381 are massive compared to the original mag cylinder. Just saying buddy, anyways loves ya Tinman and congrats on becoming a daddy, you are gonna be the best Dad hands down 👍👍👍👍

Hi Tim, Why do you have a preference for the 381 cylinder over the 038M? I understand the 381 has a higher power rating on paper than a 038M. I'm currently rebuilding a 381 but the cylinder is mildly scored. I have two good, used 038 cylinders one of which I was planning to install. Cheers.

Pressure test the carb and clean then pressure test the saw often times the case gasket will leak on the oil tank side on these old Stihls, it will cause an air leak and suck bar oil into the crankcase. Check to see if you have oil coming out of the cylinder into the muffler. Remove the oil cap when testing. Regardless time spent on pressure and vacuum testing will give you peice of mind or a shelf full of old saws waiting for new case gaskets. I have several old Stihls on the shelf with this problem. It was hard to tell just how much wear that clutch has from the video, if it's alot it will eat springs pretty fast. Curious to see how the aftermarket clutch works for this saw, the springs in some of them are not good, the last 066 clutch I got from Wolf Creek is holding up good.

I hope all is well in the Tinman household. Thanks for posting during the period of no sleep. I can do heavy work, i choose not to when it’s a decision. My loader does lifting, and the only saw I run more then my 346xp is my dewalt cordless. I do want a 2511t though, and I still want to have a 70cc weapon. Occasionally non chainsaw people try the 346xp and complain it’s to much, the 70cc will be the one to make the rest of them do the lugging and lifting instead of cutting.

The running problems were exactly like the Stihl 028 wood i did. You might want to check the clutch side seal if you put another seal in put moto seal around it. 2 the rings might take awhile to seat in with an OEM cylinder I could not tune the carb and would stall when out of a cut and hard starting on the 028 but once the rings seated in it ran great it took 3 tanks of fuel. Check were the carb bolts on you might have to make a paper gasket.

Same issues with my 028 super. Bloody thing is great if ya can get it running. I see why ppl take out the piston for better builds and throw out the rest of it. I’m more and more of a husky guy the more I have to fiddle with that era of stihl’s
@thomasgronek6469
@thomasgronek6469 Жыл бұрын
same here, yes, the clutch side seal, and carb were both bad on my 028. question, all three of my 028s run a bit fast for the first 10 to 15 seconds after starting, Have you noticed the same thing ?

I think you’re correct with the clutch. You know how saws ramp down slowly after full throttle when they don’t have a bar and chain on? Then the momentum without load makes it sluggish to throttle back up, but actually it’s just because there’s no load on it so it’s gotta “catch up”. Sounds like you’re describing that but with the bar and chain on which to me indicates clutch issue.

Same hard to start issue with a 038 magnum I've cleaned up for a buddy. I Recieved it with no spark and cooked piston. Changed the coil first and it started and ran fine but not alot of power because of the piston n rings.. Keep us posted on this saw cheers

I've run into that same problem, that plastic part that closes up to the carb for choke gets hot and warps , so it doesn't seal off, I used a depth gauge file to get it flat again and bam problem solved for choke anyway, great vid on some problem solving 👍👍

Maybe the carb arent sealing properly letting a little fuel thru and getting it to rich that way? Might try a q-tip with some bakingsoda and polish the seat up and see how the needle looks/change? See if that might help. Just a thought that might be entirely wrong

*I I just put a 1980 Stihl 038 powerhead on a tiny pocket rocket bike. Bike is stupid fast, I got it up to 51 mph before I had to get off the throttle cuz the bike is so small it gets pretty scary past 45mph.*

If I recall correctly, you put a non-stock carb on the saw - and I agree - it's running like the carb is out of adjustment. Seems low on power and acting like its a dull chain.

Years back we had two big trees and we had to take down but we didn't have no bars big enough so the company shipped two bars and two chains always run 16s and twenties it blew my mind and my old old 28 I would say it was a 4-ft bar at least and it pulled it the same as the 16

I had an 038 for a long time & since I rarely used it it was sold. Buyer had a brain fart, decided to cut a forked tree standing on a ladder, you guessed it, bar was pinched & the momentum spun the saw around knocking the trigger handle off. That handle was part of the fuel tank assembly. Had I known he would do something like that I'd kept it.

Hmm I hope this saw us running good. Maybe the air filter is the issue. The choke spring can be getting weak and it’s closing with full throttle?
