Have been watching you porting saws so much that I want to port my ELECTRIC Homelite LOL. I have received a lot of grief in the past working on point ignition systems that had red or orange fire and not blue fire. I would not let anything go out unless the fire was blue or there would be a comeback for hard or no start. Most of the time the problem was a bad condenser. Enjoy watching you.

The purpose of the condenser, aka capacitor, is to prevent the points from being burned and pitted by the flyback voltage from the coil. A capacitor fails in one of two ways and affects the spark accordingly: 1) looses capacity value, which won’t affect spark but the points will pit excessively or weld together and then no more spark. 2) slowly internally shorts over time which causes weak spark and misfires, especially when saw warms up. Just about any small engine condenser will work since the magneto ignitions are pretty much the same electrically.

Haha. The whole time I was saying "throw an ignition module in that sucker". I know mac purist don't like that but they work. I also try to run NGK plugs in everything.

Hey Tinman, when you install the module.. remove all of the parts for points/condenser.. the new module can bolt right up to the mounting where the condenser bolts behind the flywheel. its-a nice and clean way that-a-way.

This really encourages a guy like me... because I have been at those points of frustration. Sometimes a guy has to put it down and walk away for a bit... we have all seen those memes where a man and woman are laying in bed, her thought bubble says "I'm just sure he is thinking about other women" his thought bubble says "Its getting spark and it's getting fuel.... why wont it run???" That's REAL.

I had a pioneer super620 and just the 620, in my learning days I accidently try sheared the flywheel key on the super620 and it chipped the crank unfortunately. But got the 620 running it was last ran before ethanol was a thing and the carb diaphragms were perfect still didn't even need the carb kit, by far coolest saw I've seen and I regret selling it as i just buy fix and sell

I have never seen anyone put an end on a spark plug wire that way. We just put the wire coil or the crimp type end on FIRST ...add a tiny bit of dialectic grease and slide it straight in the boot. no pulling wires around corners.

me too.. and what type of wire did you use? I would try for a resistor-less wire myself. Also note about the spark plugs.. I tried different plugs in my 10-10s the champion works the best. plug should be resistor-less as well if i remember. I also tried different spark plug gaps. i believe for macs its .025

My ongoing project is a 1978 Husqvarna 480CD. Next to impossible to find parts for. Hasn't run for a year or two here and there because it needed this or that and I couldn't find it. But I've had it since it was new and just not willing to give up on it. It's an oldie and still a goodie when running. We all need challenge to give our lives some flavor. That's mine.

From the start of the video i was shouting ''Put a chip in it''.lol. Hey mate could you please give the SKF seal numbers out for that saw, I have one(or 2) that I need to replace the seals on. The worst shock I got was working on my old Subaru, I was trying to suss out a problem and grabbed the plug wires while running. Not normally a problem for a mechanic, but this time I was leaning up against the side of the car. The spark arced out through my zipper and Mr Johnson. I new I was alive, haha. Any way seal numbers would be fantastic. Cheers mate.

Hi! Thank you for the video! I have a couple of questions. I have a Castor C-70 from the 70s (an italian saw) that had ignition problems, now it runs great (except for the kill switch that doesn't work so I have to disconnect the spark plug, getting constantly shocked😂😂). While disconnecting the spark plug I noticed that it was still running because it was arching to the spark plug. The arc was like 6/7mm long at idle. Is the voltage of the coil always the same or at idle is lower than at high rpms? Im worried it is going to affect the sparkplug or fry up the condenser. Is the long arc due to points too close? Thank you!

Tinman, I have had Glyptal engine enamel recommended as a way to seal cracks in the case of older coils. I have yet to try it out.... I happen to have a Mac 2-10 sitting waiting for me to replace the kill switch wire. Did the plug wire ages ago after I discovered there was a break in the insulation Guess how I found out about the break?

I'm still confused about what the points do. The coil converts the magnetic charge from the flywheel into an electric charge that runs to the spark plug, so where do the points come into play?

To answer my own question: The electric charge produced by the magnets on the flywheel and the coil is AC, and the points are used to convert the charge to DC.
