Been thinking about replacing your wooden floor? Want to go higher? Want to go stronger? Aluminium is fantastic as it won't rot, it's light, strong and easy to work with. Dora is ready for a big change as the floor gets raised and upgraded - ready for the new casting deck.

Wile I am not building a boat I am starting to build stuff for a campervan in aluminium. The roof rack was easy enough but when I needed more variety of construction methods for more complex shapes, your videos have been so useful.

Great presentation. Well shot and easy to understand. So good to see a fishing/boating vid without having a gopro strapped to someones head for the whole thing giving me nausea.

Great vid mate subscribed 🤙🏽 q) Why foam and not storage? Thinking of raising the floor in my busta and getting rods stored in the void below. Was it a weight thing
@GriftCo
@GriftCo 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, it was more so the cavity size is small and I was adding considerable weight to the rest of the boat. If the void were perhaps a bit larger I’d put something in

Very practical and well thought out design. My only question, when you use the riv-nuts on the trusses, are they countersunk so the heads aren’t sticking proud of the surface?
@GriftCo
@GriftCo 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian, yep these ones are. The one caveat to this design is the reliance on a good seating of the rivnuts. It could be (and has been a couple times) problematic if the rivnut spins within the cavity as there's no easy way to stop the rotation, unscrewing the fastener. What I've since done is made some tack welds between the rivnuts and the frame to hopefully mitigate that risk. However I wonder if locktite might've been an easier method.

Can you tell me what sort of bolts did you use for the bolting of the floor and why ... worried about the 2 different metals reacting to salt water ... intend to leave chequer plate exposed .. cheerd
@GriftCo
@GriftCo 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Pen, good question. Unfortunately there’s not too much you can do other than use stainless bolts, unless you wanted to rivet the floor down. What is generally used is Tefgel or Duralac to put a barrier between the two metals to stop galvanic corrosion

Hey Steve! I'm using Autodesk Sketchbook. I'm an industrial designer by day, boat tinkering hack at night so I'm behind a tablet most of the work day. That said, Sketchbook is bloody awesome with the tools to help with perspective stuff and it's totally free. Worth downloading and having a play.
