Another wonderful tour Tino, thank you so much. The transition from original dilapidated condition to restored showed how much endless work is done to restore any section of the line.

Those turrets are like the proverbial iceberg, so much more below the surface. Modern day health & safety at work mob would have a fit with the exposed cogs & chain assemblies, access ladders etc.

In the early 1980's I was stationed across the border at Zweibrucken AB in W. Germany. There was an organization called "Little NATO" that was a social club from the nearby German Kaserne, US Army Kaserne, the original French Kaserne at Zwei, and the former RCAF Base Zweibrucken. The USAF took the air base when Canada withdrew and we (USAF) inherited their spot and the French participated through their Kaserne at Bitsche. Quarterly each service would sponsor a field trip and I went to the French Army tour of Simmserhof and later the Bitsche Army post. Since the start of the Cold War in the 50's the French used their usable forts of the Maginot Line for bunkers and control centers since they were filtered and protected from Nuclear, Bio, and Chemical attacks. When we went to Simmserhof, our guide was a French Army invalid veteran hired as a caretaker, he and several others to maintain the facility. Some of the rooms you show I visited back then and most were in decent shape. It was initially abandoned and then turned over to the local governments and some reopened it as tourist attractions. These are very expensive to maintain as you know and was glad to see the parts in good condition. Not all of this can be saved. That area during 1944 was not well publicized but there are KZbin videos with documentaries of the liberation of the Saarland and the fighting that went on there. Across the border were several Westwall forts but many were destroyed after WWII as they were demilitarized. At the former Air Base we had many bunkers that were repurposed into underground hospitals, command centers, etc during the Cold War and were classified locations. There is/ was a lot of history in that area of the Rheinland- Pfalz worth looking at. Thank you for for sharing this information and if you want more details contact me.

i can see easily from this tunnel system why so much metal work was scrapped from other tunnel systems, the doors alone would take some undertaking today to replace like for like and not be cheap - as for the aerial track that's something else and yet here it is in desperate need for some one to give it a new lease of life with paint etc, none of it looks that light either, the mechanisms for changing direction looks super impressive, it be nice to see if any of the rollers and hooks exist anywhere in this system? another great video Tino, thanks

The "mystery" item at 23:05 is a capstan winch for moving heavy objects with a cable or chain. You wrap the cable/chain around the capstan several times and then low around the item you want to move. The capstan is turned on and it rotates slowly pulling the cable which then moves the heavy item. This type of winch is commonly used to move heavy shells (like on a battleship or heavy cruiser), and can also be used to reposition train cars without using a locomotive (such as at a mill, in a car repair shop, or up a steep hill that is too much grade for a locomotive to climb). It looks in good condition, so it probably won't need much repair to get it functional. All depends on the gearing condition inside the base, which would normally be filled with heavy gear oil.

1:05 that’s called a MG set, ( motor ac, generator dc out) the ac motor is used to turn the DC generator which supplies power to the trains. DC is controllable for smooth operation and speed control, we still use them in some elevators in downtown LA and across the country. They are getting rare due to the fact that most new mechanics can’t fix them. The system was invented by Ward Lenard.

Thanks Tino for part 2. I was kind of laughing at the 🐸🐸🐸. It was kind of strange but I don't want to say anymore because someone might think I'm being a little not so nice but the Americans in the British during World War II used to call the French. 🐸 . It just seemed so funny to actually see a frog in a gun turret.. 😁. I just can't believe the amount of rust... It must be so dump in there.. it must be complete rank... How far away you from people? If you're reading this Tino I could just hear conversational voices but I do not know how far away from working people you were during the recording of film .. I like this location.. how deep does it actually go? In part one I noticed you were walking up five different floors, it must Go on from miles and miles. Fantastic Tino

Around Time 23:00 the mystery thing is probably a Gearbox… But imagine this would be restored and re-enacting would take place so the visitors could have an impression of how it would of bin in those days. And it can be from WOI re-enacting or WOII to make it more interesting to revisit the fort.

German Tank technology had moved on. Much further than the French thought Making the bunkers obsolete as the Germans just went through the arden forest...a task that wouldn't have been possible with the 1st world war tank design.

I like the sites you choose, and your interpretation, but I jut can't face 3.5 hours on one fort. You need to edit your material down.
