A lot of people might not look at it in this way but what you guys are doing is a massive service to those who care about history. You are documenting so many amazing, secretive, and previously unseen places before they disappear to the unforgiving hands of time. Thank you for what you do.

What struck me the most is how well everything must have been constructed to survive in such good shape. Today many structures begin to fail just 20 to 30 years into their service. This was constructed in haste and still looks as sound as when it was built. Not to mention the paint! Modern paints would never survive under such poor conditions for so long. Very sad and yet impressive how many resources must have been needed to create the line. Really cool video! I watched with English subtitles, they were very good 👍

It's mostly due to being about a hundred or more meters underground. Most of the structures that fall apart in the span of 20 to 30 years are subjected to the harsh conditions of the open environment.

Funnily enough I recently went to the maginot complex at Schoenenbourg, where there is a museum, that has been restored to the WWII status. It was fun to see the tunnels and interior looked so similar across the various bunkers.

The amount of work/engineering/labor/materials/equipment/money/time/setbacks is mind boggling and difficult to imagine in the time constraints these structures were built all over Europe in such short times. It almost seems humanly impossible but they did it. Amazing

You didn't seem to have any masks on protecting your airway from asbestos, mold, fungus and whatever else is down there. Most of the system is closed for that reason because the cost to make it safe was too high only a small number were ever modernised and they were not used for long. Even when the maginot line was first activated some troops were taken ill in certain parts i doubt it's improved with decades of total neglect.

Dus 0, 1, 2. Dat maakt het 'maar' 20 meter diep.

It's interesting to see how those structures survived the time depending on the location. In western Europe, e.g. Germany (western part) or France, you find most of the things in place, sure, rusted and neglected, but more or less complete. Years ago I visited the German equivalent on the Maginot line, i.e. Festungsfront Oder-Warthe-Bogen, that used to protect Germany from the east, so, naturally, this line currently is in Poland. I spoke to locals and when the line was broken by the Red Army with next to zero resistance from the Germans, Red Army engineers took almost everything, ripped out all the equipment. Then Polish Army stationed there for some time doing further damage (most of the turrets and doors got stolen), than it almost got used as a nuclear waste storage and when it got finally abandoned, local scrap thieves finished this place off. Almost everything got stolen, doors, stairs, everything. Pretty sad story.

An other good video. Congrats! I have visited the "ouvrage" (name in french) you inspected... And many others which are now completly closed (not completly, in fact). Some little mistakes: 12:15: not a AA gun but a mortar (86mm) if i remember. 14:17: not a AA but the system to counterbalance the weight of cupola with two 75mm canons. The "ouvrages" had no AA in themselves, only S/S canons, mortars, MG 7,5, in order to destroy artilery, tanks and infantry. AA was disposed in the intervals beetween 2 "ouvrages", in the rear. 15:16: The Maginot line has been interrumpted in the North, because belgium government protesting, saying it was an offense to put a line in their direction with canons pointed to them... So only small bunkers have been built there... Germans knew that... The Maginot Line doesn't stop on swiss border. Some defensive blocks in the North of Alps, but with a range of fire in France (if Swiss was invaded). And some incredible "ouvrages" made all along the italian border.. In the mountains... Open. They cover the whole border until Menton few meters in front of the mediteranean sea. I had almost all the plans of the ouvrages of the Line. I printed some before my Hard drive crashed... :-((( But i know how to recover some of these infos. If you are interested... Let me a message Good job! Keep on!
