It's unusual that 3 motors drive the prop on this mini WL Toys Electric Cessna! I was looking for a platform plane to run my tiny, Cox .020, 2 stroke, Nitro Engine on, and this became it. See it run and if it worked. Thanks for stopping by. ~Dave

Thank you for taking the extra trouble to record, edit and post this, instead of just doing it. I like your removable Cox mount, and was delighted to hear it running, though I recognise that the sound only seems pleasant to those of us who have formed an association with this sound and fun! That dead spot on the stock radio is appalling.

Burr! that nitro really makes your stick finger cold in wintertime! Flew a "Q-Tee" with a stock Cox .049 for years up in Michigan. Bought it at the swap meet during Toledo. Came with a two servo "brick" and a two channel EK Ligitrol transmitter. It flew so well people would offer to buy it from me after seeing it fly. One day I finally gave in. 😮

Great video, and SO good to see these little Castor Slingers live again! In the 1980's, the Cox Centurions and Sportavias RULED in our little group of flyers, They were only rivaled in the .049 size by the Cox/Sanwa "Q-Tee" parasols, which often flew using an engine rotated from one of the Centurions. Sunday afternoons at our local airport saw us flying from a dead-end ramp, much to the entertainment of the local Airport Curmudgeons, who often yelled tips and advice from their benches next to the office. As the Centurions age away "the shine on the apple" they were often subject to assorted experiments, and I actually towed one into the air using a thread running from the Robart bomb release on my Sig Kadet. I'd hit the release, and the little foamer would glide down from altitduee, trialing its tow thread. Great memories...and great hearing the sound from these little monsters! Thank You, Kim

I love how you addressed the whole "hovering power needed" that kids dont get... well... I was once a kid... flying plywood kits instead of balsa... using an o.s 40 la when people actually used 46ax 55ax on the same plane... and there I was... doing all the scale pattern flights and acrobatics... lots of dead stick landings since that lil engine was too far gone and good fuel was expensive... but then I made my own and used acetone as nitro... worked like a charm... cold or not it would goooo... Man, this little thing rips!. I got started in the hobby around 2002 when nitro was still king, so naturally I prefer nitro over electric. I love seeing electric to nitro conversions. Cox engines were definitely before my time but a lot of the older guys would bring their cox powered planes out to the field on occasion for the nostalgia. Very nice Dave! Reminded me of my maiden of a 1100mm P51 on 4s battery. It was so fast I had severe anxiety that I might crash it. I only flew it about 4 times then I sold it because it was so scary to fly. I like 3D airplanes the best. Slow and Low! Thank you for the vid and your expertise over the years. The tiny gold pistons were cool! As always great piloting. About 12 years ago I modded a Horizon 3 channel UMX Champ with the motor, esc, mechanical, and electronic parts from my crashed UMX Beast. Took the dihedral out of the wings, added the ailerons and made it ‘Super Champ’! It flies better than my factory UMX super Cub.

Only an rc champ pilot could bring it back in 1 piece, with no throttle control & bang bang controls. I figured this rc system has under 100m range too, which is pointless for a plane. So thinking about building rc heli or rc bike from its rc system 3 motor design is actually reverse redundant too ie if 1 motor fails, the other motors having to run dead motor make other motors overheat & fail too. Nonetheless it is a value for money parts pack.

Did your Cessna have a spar in the wing? I had one of these and so did a friend and the issue with both of them was the extremely flexible wing. It would fold under high speeds and the plane would plummet, and it would straighten back out when you slowed down! I was amazed to see yours not doing that despite the added weight, great video and I honestly wondered what one of these engines would do on a foamie!

The people at Cox must have been all deaf! How could they continue to make engines that were so noisy? Their "attempts" at mufflers were a joke - no meaningful quietening with way less power. With engines making such a din, it certainly did put the hobby in a good light.

Is that huge dead band maybe needed for the auto stabilizer to correctly recognize "let go" sticks, with likely not very tight tolerances at this price point? And this was what you meant by "semi-proportional"? It would drive me crazy, I even don't like too agressive expo for this reason.

So on these cox planes how do u land and control the throttle or do you not? lol. Does it just run at the proper RPM and you control the lift and stuff? How do u stop it after landing just let it run outta gas or grab it or what? Like I said I have never had one and I found one in great shape at a flea market for 18.00 and now I’m hooked so I gotta learn. I remember my uncle having one in the early 80’s and hen I was a kid and always thought it was soooo cool.

This is not a Cox plane. Its a modern electric that I converted. To modify it , I added the nitro engine. These tiny engines run wide open at constant speed. The elevator on this R/C plane is controlled by the transmitter's elevator stick and the rudder makes it turn. When it runs out of fuel, you must glide in for a landing, as shown. Good luck.

I run only Torko 20% fuel in all my nitro engines. 20% should work better. The Higher the nitro the better it will stay running. Open the needle 2.5 turns and start from there.

@@NightFlyyer Okay. I will try it with 2 1/2 i mostly started at 3 1/2. The proplem with the nitro is, that here in germany I can't buy anything with more then 16% and when I mix in more oil the nitro % is even lower. But I will see if I can get something with more nitro. Thank you :)

Okay, quick update its running now on like 12% nitro. I forgot to install the little spring between tank and engine 🙃. I still will try to get some fuel with at least 25% so i have around 20% left after mixing it with oil.

@@fliegerdefunes7758 It really should run fine on that. Use Synthetic oil instead of Castor and it should run fine. Let me know how it goes, or post you link to your video in the comments here. Thanks.

@NightFlyyer both. I will will open the attic and see if I still have it. I know I had one. Never flew it and I'm unsure of it's condition. It was given to me. If I still have it, I will reach out to you and send it your way.

That is refreshing, because I have zero respect to electric flying. To me it is a shortcut, a lazy persons way to get flying models without the hardship of real engines. More like this, back to the real RC that drones have almost destroyed by being troublemakers.

I just found one of these Cessna centurion just like you have pictured at a flea market still in the box with all the instructions and everything for 18.00 bucks. Just needed cleaned up. Took the engine apart and the piston and everything was in freakin great shape. I’m thinking about converting it to an electric or an actual nitro motor not sure yet. I will attach a pic.

This electric plane did not have an engine. It has 3 motors that are electric. I converted it to the Cox engine. They didn't come with it. Not sure what you got, but good luck and happy flying.

DC Bambi was the smallest production engine not the cox 0.10

Not true! The engine on this plane is a .020. I never said it was the smallest. If you want to see the true smallest, watch my Flying Shop rag video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2iwqHmMfaiFprs It has a .010 engine on it, made by Cox and still is and was the smallest production engine in the world. The DC Bambi is 0.15cc and is also diesel and was Manufactured in England in the late 1950's.
