I find it amazing how fast you can overload your pickup, I can overload my 16 f-150 with a POPUP, yes a popup. its a bigger off road one where you load your 4-wheeler on the front, didn't seem like a big deal till I realized I was putting an extra 800 lbs of tongue weight on there its still not bad I'm only 200lbs over but damn. I guess ill be going back to a diesel for my next pickup

I seriously saw a Toyota Tundra yesterday on hwy 70 rolled over towing a 5er. The 5er was on its side and the Tundra was upright. Pretty sure he will be handed tickets.

why? because the tundra has a shortbed? from what I've read, even with the most perfect set up, TTs and fifth wheels can flip given certain circumstances but was advised not to use a shortbed truck for a fifth wheel.

Lilian Tong I was just talking about weight mainly. 4 people in the truck and he was towing what looked like a 28 to 30 ft fifth wheel. Pretty darn sure he was way over loaded. Don’t know what a 09 to a 2012 tundra tows but I don’t think it’s suppose to tow that much.

I have a 2018 Highland Ridge Light LF291 5er, which I pulled fine with my 2015 F150 4x4 5.0l. ASll my numbers were maxed out. I also installed sumo springs. The 5th wheel towed great, better than any TT I have owned. My mileage was 10.5 from Illinois to Florida. I did not go through the mountains. The only thing that bothered me was the constant shifting. It never raised the trans temp over 205. But I purchased a 2018 Ram 2500 with the 6.7 cummins. I don't get any better fuel mileage, but the trans hardly ever downshifts. I problem I have now is the pin weight is so light, I can not get enough squat in the truck for the trailer to be level while towing. I have everything adjusted as low as I can. Part of the problem may be Ram puck system, which requires a square 2x2 steel base that the hitch sits on top. Any suggestions?

it seems to me the problem with the 5er/goose trailers is their heavier pin weight requirements compared to Travel trailers, which for the most part forces the use of a one ton truck for the 5ers. This and so many other videos point out quite clearly, that payload capacity is quickly consumed by the pin weights and leaves little room for additional passengers/cargo, and considering families are the primary users of 5ers, then you need to reserve 600# for people and at least 200# for other stuff. So having 2000# pin weight, 800# for people and and other stuff, you have maxed out almost every 3/4 ton payload limit. So clearly, you do need a one ton to pull a 5er, so getting a small or large 5er is not relevant as a one ton is required regardless of size, period. RV manufacturers are making longer TTs these days. I just purchased a 38' Grand Design Reflection 315. It comes in at 9340# curb weight with a 10,995 GVWR and this is perfect for a 3/4 ton truck. A tongue weight of between 934 - 1300# depending on load. leaves plenty of capacity for the rest of the truck for people and cargo in the bed. Just invest in a high end trailer sway hitch unit and you don't need the one ton, especially if you only tow a few times a year. I know the 5er is preferred as a configuration because of sway issues or need lots of beds, but it seems to me if you are looking for a small 5er, it's because you don't need the all the beds, and/or do not want to use a one ton truck, because of less cost, or for the better drive ability, especially if the truck will be more of a daily driver, then a frequent tow hauler. I suggest folks look at the larger TTs.

You don't need a 4500 dually to tow a trailer lol. You can get a 3/4 or 1 ton srw and be just fine if you buy the right trailer. The trailer in this video is okay to tow behind that 3/4 truck lol.

It would make for a good toy hauler to put like a motorcycle or four wheeler in the van and then tow a trailer. My old Dodge D150 could have safely towed that RV, but the frame was reinforced, the leaf springs... front suspension and brakes... were upgraded by the guy I bought it from. Great for towing, but it handled like a large bull suffering from epileptic seizures when it wasn't towing or hauling anything. Lousy fuel economy, too. There's probably only a handful of currently manufactured ½ pickup trucks that could safely tow that RV, but those are mostly work trucks. Not many people get those configurations... mostly farm hands, or tradesmen. Nice RV, though! 😋👍

Good Video. ... IMHO there is no such thing as 1/2T towable & being safe. It's an oxymoron. Never is the expression "buyer beware" more warranted than when buying a towable. I have one of the higher rated 1/2T p/u and when salespeople tried to tell me I'd be fine with similar rigs as in your video I knew they were not able to do the math correctly or didn't understand. Several told me the labels on the truck were way too conservative. I've towed for over 40+ years and believe in being under spec's by 10-20% vs on it or over. Not much skill required to get it moving; but stopping & keeping it in a straight line is a different story. Most don't realize it doesn't take much to add 1k #'s of gear inside the trailer & another 500-1K #'s to the truck.

Don’t know if you will read this but could you tell us the max turn you can get with the 6’10” bed. They added 5” to bed length from the 6’6” bed and moved the pin location 2” behind rear axle. Wondering if this will allow a close to 90 degree turn without a sliding hitch.

I've seen them. The problem is that most are upwards of 7 and 8k GVRW with a 1100lb dry and 1500lb loaded pin weight. A max tow Canyon has a cargo capacity around 1800lbs and a tow rating around 8k. You'd be good if you pack very light.

Isn't it great . I see what you meant about this video 😂 . I think we can shave a few pounds off our numbers since we don't have the Duramax. We're going to be ordering ours with the theater seating instead of the jackknife sofa. Other then that you have our 5th wheel. I'm pretty sure they didn't do a radiant barrier under the belly storage because it's already heated. The 2020 cougar line is 0 to 100 rated across all of their 5th wheels. Right now we're rocking a 95 Kit Companion 27gt. So no slides, and it's rather drafty 😂 . We live in a destination spot so camping for us is about 5 minutes in any direction and we get a bit of snow. Anyway, great video and at 2000 pound loaded (for us) in the bed were going to be towing safe not sorry.

Hello, this is very informative. We are looking to “match” a new Travel Trailer to our “current” truck, a 2018 GMC Sierra V8, 6,2L NHT equipped, and are looking at a maximum trailer weight of 9995lbs... the actual towing capacity of our truck is 11700 lbs, with a 1900lbs weight rating that matches the 7600lbs GWR of the truck with a 17700lbs GCWR...lots of number to play with, and the RV dealers are saying anything and everything :-( What do you think? I tow a 7,000 lb travel trailer with my 1500 Ram and my trailer has as much room if not more than the one shown in this video. From there I’m able to zip around town and do work stuff with the smoothest ride available. 1500’s have many advantages, it’s just that the sheep are all going bigger bigger and bigger. No need to.

Sure he is, payload for the truck could be 2684 lbs, even if (for whatever crazy reason the pin weight happens to be 1/3 of the empty trailer, which I think is highly unlikely) the trailer pin weight is indeed 2071lbs, there is still 600lbs for cargo in that truck, then it also has a tow rating of 11,000lbs. Not sure why this truck and trailer seems to be a problem, am I missing something ?

These “half ton” trailers are designed to have less than the traditional 20-25% pin weight. When we weighed the pin weight of my old “half ton” 5er via tripod @ cat scale our GVWR was 9970, and our (loaded) pin weight was only 1330 lbs. Rescale with trailer alone, was 8160 loaded. Just because BTBRV says something, most of the time it isn’t actually the case. He’s ALWAYS speaking worst case scenario. Be smart about the way you load your trailer and truck, and you could EASILY pull this trailer within spec of a half ton truck.

There are a few brands that make tiny tiny fifth wheels that are designed to be half ton towable, but even sometimes they can be too heavy. For instance, the Winnebago Micromini fifth wheels still have 1100lb DRY pin weights. That will be closer to 1600lbs when loaded. So even a Tundra with a 1800lbs payload capacity will be over when you add the hitch and people to the truck

Thank you for spreading this message... I am on a lot of forms and people always think that its ok to tow a 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton. When I ask them how much their rig weighs 90% of the time they are over the payload on the truck.

I really hope all of the big 3 start doing these stickers. On a separate note I wonder why so many people on here get angry when you point out the numbers. I have a half ton and know it’s limitations even with nearly 2000lbs of payload capacity. It’s like you or others who comment on vehicles are calling some of their kids ugly or something. The facts are the facts. I think people are pissed because they bought a truck and it’s not quite what they were sold on and now they need to get a different truck and will loose money. Hell I’m there that’s why I’m keeping my current travel trailer for at least another year till I can get out of my truck without getting hammered by the dealer

LOL... 5th wheel hitches are not available for either of those, though there is an internet "legend" of a Ridgeline rigged with a 5th wheel hitch towing a very light-weight 5'er (not a Scamp/Casita/Escape, surprisingly.).

Scamp has a 19' 5th wheel that weighs 2000 to 2900 lbs. (I think this was dry weight, not GVWR). Escape has a 21' 5th wheel with a 5500 GVWR. Both are molded fiberglass.

JD - you’ll have to chat with the guys over at Haylett RV. They have a KZbin channel and keep citing dry weights and giving impressions that many rigs are half-ton towable. I tried to convince them to provide the GVWR and cautioned them on making 1/2 tons sound like the right truck, but to no avail.

The tow rating on trucks doesn't say camper. A landscape trailer with 2 pallets of fertilizer weighs approximately 7k. Alot easier to tow than a camper of similar weight. Just saying

Nice trucks but not practical for most. The dealership network is also very limited and would be difficult to get worked on in many parts of the country. FORD, GM and RAM dealerships are everywhere

You definitely have a bias against 1/2 ton trucks. I like your channel and you know your subject matter. I have a half ton truck and in every episode you mention half ton trucks, you basically state that 6000 lbs is the max you should tow. Yet I have gone to the truck manufacturer as well as independent tow sources and I have found that they generally don’t agree with your assessment.

I have nothing against half ton trucks. Honestly. I have a great respect for towing safety and being comfortable and confident when towing. I generally agree that a 1/2 ton truck is completely capable of towing well over 6k lbs. Even upwards of 12k lbs if the trailer is balanced perfectly, the conditions outside are great, you're not pulling up or down a high grade, and the driver has experience towing and understands how to setup his/her WDH as well as brake controller perfectly. Unfortunately, most new RVers (and many seasoned ones) do not. If you are towing heavier but are doing it safely and confidently, then good for you. My message is to newer RVers that may not have the experience and knowledge when towing. Helping make them (and others) as safe and confident while on the road is my main goal. Same reason asking someone who has only driven a Prius their entire life to drive a Dually Pickup in a tight parking lot with no guidance isn't the greatest advice.

There is no way any of these 3/4 ton trucks, by the numbers, can tow any of these trailers. Even 1 ton would be pushing it with anything bigger than this trailer. How are we expected to tow anything with a 3/4 ton truck? There is no way the truck in the video is light, and by the time you load up, your payload has to be close to maxed out.🤷🏼‍♂️
