My roommates are getting married! But before that was official, Kyle needed to propose. Since we were going to be on the road when this happened, Kyle wanted a compact and inconspicuous way to store and reveal the ring. So he asked me to make him a compact ring box, and bought me lunch for my troubles.

My first CNC router (a Bobscnc) arrives on Monday and my CNC study books arrive tonight. Your is a channel I shall be checking frequently for education as I learn how to incorporate a CNC router with the rest of my woodworking projects. Great videos Winston!

Fun little build - I literally just did the same thing on my channel (it was me proposing though!). Was probably one of, if not, my all time favorite projects. No CNC for me though - although yours is sweet. Cheers

Nice box and story. Down cut bits are worth the slower feed rates they require. They don't produce fuzz or tear out and they won't suck up thin materials. I've tried boring from the back side for the magnets so they aren't visible. It is not always possible but it is a nice touch when it can be done. My nephew recently got engaged. I'm getting old ;-)

Great stuff and very useful information. NOW lets down to the fact that he has a 2ND box....so when, ummm, you know?

+Richard Cournoyer Hahaha, I gave that one to my friend at Makerfaire, since she appreciates intricate examples of woodworking. Without a ring in it, mind you...

Very nice work, Winston. I see your a Fusion 360 man, I kinda figured you were. Very well explained, video editing is great, music is nice. Well executed. Where did you learn Fusion? from KZbin or self taught?
@WinstonMakes
@WinstonMakes 7 жыл бұрын
+Jesse Fritz Self taught. I had training in ProE/Creo back in my undergrad, and that was enough to let me pick up Solidworks and Inventor on my own. I was then convinced last December to give Fusion an honest try. And I quickly got over my disagreements with the interface. The built in CAM is killer.
@JF32304

I agree. the bolt in CAM is incredible. I'm coming over from AutoCAD 2D/3D wire frame. picked up Fusion due to having a 3D printer and I'm understanding the interface more and more. should be ordering my Shapeoko XXL this week. at first it was a little rough but the more time you spend in it the better you get.

Winston, I'm a new subscriber to your channel and new to the world of CNC. I own a company that builds holsters and want to make my own gun molds using a CNC machine. How difficult it is to work with these kinds of programs, is it something I could learn on my own??
@WinstonMakes
@WinstonMakes 6 жыл бұрын
Different programs have different learning curves. I (like to) think my "Intro to CNC" playlist does an okay job showing what a 2D workflow looks like. 3D has a few more wrinkles. You can use programs like MeshCAM where you drop in an STL, and it basically creates a toolpath for you. Or you can use something like Fusion 360 and have a lot more control over the toolpath at the expense of that learning curve. But if you're comfortable with making CAD drawings, you're basically halfway there.

Is it replacing your homemade dust separation system (project #38)-if so, for what reason? Just wondering because I wanted to make one, and would be curious to know if you had encountered issues with it not mentioned in the original video. Thanks for your videos, I haven't found a lot of channels focussed on desktop CNC, so your channel has been instrumental to me.
@WinstonMakes

It was more out of convenience, since I had sort of cobbled together a system sized exactly to my hoses at the time. Got a new vacuum coming, so instead of remaking /rebuilding my separator to accept standardized fittings/adapters, I decided to go off the shelf and focus on other projects. Probably should have settled on a more common hose diameter the first time, but you can only think so far ahead...
