The sawdust from your grandfather's workshop is something special. My grandfather passed away nearly 20 years ago and I was fortunate to discover some tools in the shed which had been left behind by my uncles. I restored his 26" Disston 7-point rip saw and it now lives above my work bench. I also got one of his old oil cans, so I put the oil for my sharpening stone into it. Always important o hold on to a few things for the sake of memories and the people who made you the person you are today.

You stole my ADD excuse! Hella great ideas in this one video. First the philosophical challenge to power tools which (i'm actively laying out a garage wood shop) I've encountered on KZbin, and a relevant reminder that carving, drawing wood, planing, and chiseling is fun for me. Second the self awareness to include non-work nooks for contemplation or video work. Lots of inspiration in physical reminders of your journey. Third is "scrum board" learning is now on my schedule thanks to your generous, candid and transparent sharing of your challenges or vulnerabilities and how you deal. Absolutely wonderful to spend a little time with a sister soul, and one so young and inspiring. I began my own journey a million years ago at the tender age of 18 when I bought a plot of land with my pocket money. I battled conventional thinking and opinions and somewhat blithely ignored the effect that would have on my 'success'. You redefine that when you reach a certain age after life has tested you to the max. I'm 53 now, solo, and I live as sustainably as I can and make, build, fix and grow everything possible. It became life rather than the ambition and lifestyle I suppose. Living in work. I'm a blacksmith trained by by my blacksmith father, a self-taught amateur traditional woodworker, a plumber by necessity, an aspiring but lazy musician, a forest keeper (over 200 acres of tough Aussie bush), I've built three of my own natural homes and assisted others in a mentoring capacity to build their own dreams. I'm a hill culture organic gardener and I'm a teacher of everything I know free to others, particularly women who want to feel empowered with new skills that give them a new kind of freedom. Like you I've come a long way through trauma to the other side where contentment and the love of everything that is life are all that matters. My workshop is a little rougher, everything secondhand, lovingly restored and maintained, my work not so refined as yours but I am capable of those heights. Marvelous to know that younger women than I, are following their dreams. Imagine where you will be when you reach my age. Extraordinary!

@AnneofAllTrades4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you struggle as well. Backlog boards haven't been super helpful for me because eventually they just become lists of what I HAVEN'T done. The kanban/scrum boards really have changed that. Check out the book doing twice the work in half the time. It really changed the mindset of "to do" lists to rewarding myself for "what's possible and what's done :)"

I felt warm in my heart when you got 29 people showed up to help you unload the truck, amazed at your mandolin sound (I play the sax, btw), and got tears in my eyes when you talk about the sawdust jar from you grandpa. I love to have a shop of my own for a long time but just recently can afford to have a small corner to start with and so am a newbie in wood working. Thank you so much for sharing this inspiration for hand tool path that I would like to do in the next few years. I am a power tool guy now, for a reason. But I know hand tool wood working is the way to go. Thank you again, and stay safe and well!

I also loved the part about your grandfather's saw dust. smells evoke memories. My brother sent me a few of my grandfather's spoke shaves and draw knives. Yes, they caused tears remembering them in his workshop. Great video

Very charming. Is sometimes surprises me what some people consider tiny.
@AnneofAllTrades4 жыл бұрын
The “tiny” is more referencing leaving my 1500 square foot shop and machinery in Washington. If you want truly tiny, check out my Instagram archives, I spent three years working out of my laundry room, climbing over my workbench to get to the other side when I was in the middle of projects ;)

Depression? I would never have guessed. Your smile and charm is delightful. I admire your talent but being a great deal older with arthritis in wrists and fingers, I thank God for power tools. Those hand planers brought up a lot of memories and made me cringe with the thought of the pain they would cause if I tried to use one now.

I’m so sorry to hear about your arthritis, my mom similarly had to give up piano and banjo and it was such a shame, I loved listening to her play.

Nice "little shop, Anne, and Welcome to Tennessee~! I was raised down the road from Nashville in Chattanooga, but we're currently (stationed) in Augusta, GA. We intend to return to "The Nooga" after we retire. I'm Army-retired, but we'll both retire (me again) for good in a few years where I'll finally be a full-time woodworker. I can't wait to see your dream shop~! I finally "upgraded" to a 30x40 pole barn after working in single-car garage sized spaces for years. Moving from here will be bitter-sweet, but doing it all over again is exciting too. Congrats~!!

The nice thing about being, I think you said, 'obsessed' with little things and writing instruments, like pencils, is that as you use a pencil it gets smaller. Kind of a two times pleasure and passion. Nice shop. I just subscribed to your KZbin. Good luck. I hope things continue moving in the direction that's best for your soul.

It's super cool to see a shop that is really geared for sentiment, hand tools, and comfort. My work flow and shop space is heavily dictated by what makes the most money. So there's very little sentiment in my shop. It's all about making money by production speed. But many of my woodworking friends are hobbyists. I know you aren't technically a hobbyist. But the shop set up is very similar. My hobbyist friends get to build some super detailed things that I couldn't afford to do, much like your projects. They can spend a month or two on a single small piece of furniture. One day I would love to build some things like that. Thank you for letting us into your shop!

When I first quit my job to build furniture full time, I failed, because I wasn't able to produce furniture fast enough at the quality I wanted to to turn a profit. I tip my hat to you for doing so. My second attempt at going full time with woodwork went a lot better as I was hired to run a woodworking school, and I'm forever thankful I got to jump into the craft with both feet full time for those three years, but now that I'm self employed and running the farm, alas, once again there isn't a whole lot of time for woodwork, but there are some fun announcements coming down the pike soon that should change that ;)

@@AnneofAllTrades that's awesome! Thanks for the detailed response. And I failed at it as well. Twice. I had to reset, rely on my other job to recoop and retry. I settled on basically a mobile shop like Ron Paulk doing cabinetry and remodels. That was my first successful full time woodworking venture. Then I slowly started building my home shop with that same philosophy of efficiency and speed. But just like you said... The quality severely affects the time it takes to make. Affecting the profitability. I've definitely had to find a sweet spot of a high quality product that honestly isn't perfect. But it's higher quality than most of the other pros around, and I try to give suberb customer service and have the client's be super pleased with doing business with me... Even tho my products aren't cheap or perfect. They also aren't the most expensive around, and they are still great quality. I'd rate their quality at an A- for most of my stuff. I'm convinced anyone can get a job somewhere in the trades and eventually find their sweet spot if they keep trying, keep adjusting, and they work their butt off. Thanks for sharing a bit of your story! I think more people need to hear stories like that from woodworkers that somehow include woodworking in their income producing world. I think a lot of people want to make some money woodworking but don't know how to get past the common sales places like Etsy, Facebook, and Craigslist.

This is the first video of yours I've watched. I have some mental health issues, and I love to start new projects. Finish them.....mmm....not so much. Lol. Shortly after starting a new project, my mind is racing ahead to the one after that, and the one after that, and the one after that.... I'm dealing with it now - trying to keep myself focused on one project till it's finished. I tell myself the reason I'm excited about a new idea, is because it involves wood, and tools - well, the piece I'm currently working on also involves wood, and tools, so pour your excitement into it. It's mostly working for me. Lol. Ok, I'm going to watch more of your stuff.

First time to channel. Love to see women and tools. I can’t express to my family how I would love my father’s tools. He passed away and there are siblings and steps sister/brother as well who think I’m greedy when in fact I want to use them and also pass them down. I need your scheduling system desperately! I will be looking forward in watching your videos. Thanks for sharing!

Welcome! good on you for wanting to put those tools to good use. Most of my grandfather's tools went to other family members, but the few I got to keep are some of my most treasured posessions!

I attended Anne's class at Christopher Schwartz's shop. She was, as you might imagine, a splendid teacher--kind, patient, enthusiastic and a perfect model. She was generously assisted, I should add, by Megan Fitzpatrick, who is as fun and funny as she is knowledgeable. --Thank you both.
